Meliora/Popestar Ghouls guide

I noticed some people still have trouble telling the Ghouls apart. Specifically Meliora era Ghouls. So i'll try to make things easier for all of you :)

Learning which symbol/alchemic element (which was Martin Persner's/Omega's idea btw!) belongs to a certain Ghoul is essential:

🜂- Fire, 🜄- Water, 🜁 - Air, 🜃 - Earth, 🜀 - Quintessence. The first Fire Ghoul was also called Alpha and the first Quintessence Ghoul - Omega. Why such names? Because Quintessence/Ether Ghoul had Ω sticker on his guitar and fans started calling him Omega and his counterpart - Alpha. These names just fit them perfectly. Meliora era was unique because neither of previous Papas, nor Cardinal/Papa 4 called Ghouls by their names/elements. Only Papa III did that.

There were few changes of lineups during Era 3 and some Ghouls were given different names by fans. Simply because naming their elements wasn't enough. Examples will be seen below.

Ways to tell them apart when they are on stage:

Their instruments and stickers.

They are placed in certain areas of the stage: Quintessence and Earth on Papa's right, Water in the middle, Air and Fire on Papa's left.

Different body types, eyes, rings, bracelets and tattoos.

The way they behave.

When they are off stage, on promo photos etc just take a look at their chests.

Even though every Ghoul has 5 elements embroidered on their suits, their respective element is highlighted.

HQ pictures are pretty helpful if y'all wanna find your favorite Ghoul.

2015 lineup:

Air Ghoul #1. Simply Air. Joined Ghost in 2011. No tattoos, no rings. Usually quite calm on stage, favorite gesture is🤘 . Was the tallest Ghoul till 2017. Had cool keytar solo. Didn't move much.

Pebble aka Earth Ghoul #2. Joined Ghost in June 2015. Smol (yes, smaller than Papa). Has intense stare. Literal beast when it comes to playing drums. Had a special way of throwing sticks to fans (literally footballed them into the crowd lol). Funny one.

Quintessence Ghoul #1 aka Omega. Terzo's favorite Ghoul. His butt was smacked and grabbed by Papa countless times during Year Zero solo. Known for his stomping, graceful guitar playing style, has big silver rings on both hands and pretty eyes. Has the cutest laugh. Did lots of interviews when Special Ghoul wasn't around. Loves Abba. Has been in the band from 2010 till july 2016.

Water Ghoul #4 aka Delta. Slightly shorter than Papa III. Joined in 2015. Sometimes kicks air (literal air, not his fellow Ghoul) on stage, also filled in for Alpha (when he injured his shoulder) and Omega for a few shows. Played rhythm guitar after Omega left. Has no rings, no visible tattoos, but has mad skills. Allegedly he's the one who tried to kick the dude who got on stage and kissed Terzo lol

Fire Ghoul #1 aka Alpha. Popular among fans. Hangs out with every Ghoul on stage, especially with Water and Pebble. Loves cameras, does✌ a lot, humps his guitar sometimes. Enjoys attention, a bit horny:) Also did a few interviews (mostly with Omega), has strong accent, also speaks Italian. Has rings and tattoos on both hands (had none during era 1 and 2!). Taller than Papa. Joined in 2010, left in november 2016.

2016

Omega left in july, so Water took over rhythm guitar and the first Ghoulette of the Ghost, Mist, was introduced. This lineup toured till the end of the year and nobody returned for Popestar tour in 2017.

Quintessence Ghoul #2. Basically just Water, but with different guitar and highlighted QE symbol on his uniform.

Mist Ghoulette aka Water#5. Tiny💜, unlike Copia's Ghoulettes she wore the same outfit and mask (that looked a bit too big for her) just like other Ghouls. Badass bass player, has a ring, a tattoo on her finger and painted nails. Veeeeery calm. Cute as hell. Alpha liked her a lot.

Fire, Earth and Air Ghouls were same as in 2015:

2017

All of the previous Ghouls left and the new pack replaced them. If you see Ghouls who are +- same height as Papa, that's them!

(Dewdrop/Water #7, Aether/Quintessence #3, Zephyr/Air #2, Ifrit/Fire #2, Ivy/Earth #3)

Ifrit aka Fire Ghoul #2. Chaotic, hyperactive, Papa's hype man. Same height as Terzo, sweet bean, has wiiiide chest dorito shaped No tattoos, no rings. Spins, dances, jumps a lot. Gets "shot" during Ghuleh/Zombie Queen. No 🜂 sticker on his guitar. Only toured till 2018.

Aether aka Quintessence Ghoul #3. Beefy, jumps a lot, has rings and a bracelet. Always looks friendly. Plain black guitar with no QE symbol. Also pretty active, especially with his pal Ifrit. A bit taller than Papa III. Ran after Terzo when he got gragged off the stage by Papa Nihil's people. Joined in 2017, left in 2022.

P.S. since he's not Omega, his butt was safe during Year Zero solo 🙃

Dewdrop aka Water Ghoul #6 aka Sodo. Smaller than Terzo. Has an aggressive guitar playing style. A bit horny (it got worse). No visible tattoos. Proudly played bass with someone's panties. Syncs with Ifrit and Aether during Ghuleh/Zombie Queen outro. Became Fire Ghoul #3 in 2018. He's still in the Ghost (as of february 2024).

Zephyr aka chAir Ghoul #2. Sits on chair, a lot :) Charming, more active than previous Air ghoul. Loses it during Monstrance Clock, Per Aspera Ad Inferi and Cirice. Could be a great DJ. Almost the same height as Papa. Has a ring. His Mummy Dust keytar solo -[X]. Only toured till 2018.

Ivy aka Earth Ghoul #3. Underrated, many don't know much about him. Was present only during European leg of the Popestar tour (from march till july). Has brown eyes, a tattoo and bracelets. Same height as Ifrit. Wasn't around much, but still did a great job. Was later replaced by Mountain.

Mountain aka Earth Ghoul #4. Joined Ghost in july 2017. The tallest Ghoul. Hates shoes. Has a tattoo on the finger of his right hand, but you won't see shit on photos from this era because he wasn't photographed much and drummers usually get less attention than others in general:/ Quite calm comparing to Pebble. He's still in the band (as of february 2024).

Honorable mentions:

Special Ghoul aka Phil. Has green eyes, speaks Swedish. Did lots of interviews, showed up to grab a few awards for Ghost, worships cats and loves Abba. Literally Papa in disguise (aka Fire Ghoul's uniform and mask). Has been in the shadows since 2017.

Cowbell Ghoul. The myth, the legend. Played cowbell during "Ritual" and "If You Have Ghosts" a few times at the end of the Popestar tour in 2016. Tall, has a posture of a shrimp, always got shooed by Papa. Many want him back.

Almost Lost

In all his years at the Ministry, Alpha had never quite faced something like this. He was standing in front of the entry to the ghoul den, but when he went to go in, he found the door was frozen shut. One would think it was no big deal, right? He was a fire ghoul, surely a little ice on a door wouldn’t be a world ending situation.

Except, it kind of was. It was bitterly cold out, the snow pelting against him. It was piled up to his calves, seeping into his boots and making his feet numb. He wasn’t prepared for it to get this bad when he went out earlier to lock down the greenhouses for Mountain.

When the weather did turn nasty, he had kicked up his element immediately, just so he would survive the walk back. Now, here he was, stuck outside with little to none of his magick left to unfreeze the door or even reach out across his link with Omega. His hands had long since gone numb thanks to his unintelligent decision to forgo gloves. Not that it mattered, he had left his phone inside.

Without many other options, he gathered the rest of quickly diminishing strength and pounded on the door. A Sibling that happened to be passing by was startled by the sudden sound. He looked out of the window nearest to the door in shock, then tried to push the door open. When he didn't have any luck there, he swiftly turned to run back to the den and get help.

With the knowledge that help was on the way, Alpha curled in on himself to wait until it arrived. He pulled on the last vestiges of his magick in a desperate bid to warm himself. That proved to be a terrible mistake. He let out a choked scream of agony as all of his skin suddenly felt like it was being rubbed with sandpaper.

It felt like hours before he heard panicked voices on the other side of the door. Finally, with some effort, the door opened and it took every ounce of strength he had left to stumble inside, straight into Omega's arms. Everything after that was a blur of pure, agonizing pain. He couldn't understand anything anyone was saying to him or anyone else.

The fire ghoul wanted nothing more than to let sleep take him, but it just wouldn't. Before he was even able to register that he was in a bathroom, he was being stripped of his clothes and shoes. That sandpaper feeling came back with a vengeance as the soaked material rubbed against his skin.

He painfully tried to blink away the haze in his eyes and when it wouldn't clear, he lifted his hands to rub at them. Someone grabbed his hands gently and who he thought was Mountain spoke to him sternly.

“Don't do that, you'll only make it worse.”

He was then led to a bathtub and helped into it. Realistically, the water was only lukewarm, but it felt like lava on his skin. Alpha tried desperately to fight being lowered into the water. All he could manage was to weakly paw at his caretaker’s chest and let out strangled whimpers. Once he was laid back in the water, propped up by the wall of the tub, he began to tremble.

There was something laid over his eyes that burned, but thankfully not as badly as everything else had. A warm mug was pressed to his lips as Mountain helped him to slowly drink some herbal tea. Over time, he started to relax somewhat. The pain was still very much there and his body still shook, but he could at least close his eyes now.

Alpha hadn't even registered that he'd fallen asleep, until a sudden but gentle touch on his forehead woke him. As he regained his bearings, he realized with relief that he could see and hear properly again.

He was in his own bed, two blankets laid over him and a mountain of pillows under him, keeping him propped up slightly. The hand on his forehead belonged to Mist, who was smiling down at him as she stood at his bedside.

“You're finally awake, it's been two days.” He said softly as he pulled up a chair to sit. “Everyone's been so worried.”

Alpha swallowed thickly. “I'm sorry…didn't think it'd get that bad.”

She shook her head and grabbed a mug. “You don't need to apologize, love. We're all just happy you're okay, that you're alive.” He said, helping him to drink some more tea.

They sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes. The water ghoulette ran her slender fingers through his dark hair. It took a moment to really process the fact that we're it not for his pack, he wouldn't be here. A gentle thumb came up to wipe away a stray tear from his cheek.

“We've got you, ember. Always.”

imagine his fins are on his back. his fish ears. his sharp teeth are like a piranha's. his long hair.

the moon is reflected in the surface of the water. chain is thinking about something.

silence. absolute peace. he gets up and slowly sinks into the water.

Alpha Ghoul - Characterization

My personal interpretation of Alpha, for reference.

He is the very first summon. At the founding of the ministry he was raised from the pit before any other Ghoul. To this day no one can make the man retire. He will be there when the stones of the cathedral crack apart and tumble to the earth.

He is 5'8", with a lighter frame than the other ghouls that were summoned just after him--these were Aether, Ifrit, and Omega, in my canon. They formed the first group of Ghouls in the ministry and, while Alpha was certainly the most sleek of the bunch, he is still solidly built.

Mountain usually tends to the garden now, but what most don't know is that Alpha planted half of it. When the ministry's walls were still being built, he knelt down in the dirt with the first Mothers and Sisters of Sin and buried the seeds that would eventually grow to cover the courtyard.

For the first few months, he could barely sleep. The ministry was still new and vulnerable and he was so vigilant against any potential threats that he hardly allowed himself to rest. He'd walk the halls and gardens, checking their wards, listening intently for anything out of place. It took time for his fellow ghouls to ease him into a full night's sleep.

There's a chair just outside the nuns' quarters that he's still found fast asleep in some nights. Father Nihil placed it there for him when it became apparent that he tended to linger in that area. He likes to be near the Sisters in case anything happens. It's difficult to get him into his own bed in the den. That chair is more worn than his mattress.

He's there, and has been there, for every birth, death, marriage and baptism. New babies have each felt a kiss pressed to their forehead by the old ghoul. New Sisters have found him waiting with open arms--and towels--after their baptisms and initiations. He ties the hands of newlyweds for their handfasting and blesses every grave at the end of a life. No soul passes through the ministry untouched by Alpha's warmth.

HI I do!!

As for names, I call air water and earth just those names! I think the idea of them being the first of their elements and so they get dibs at the name is fun, (obv alpha and omega were THE first ghouls, so they get alpha and omega) but I will sometimes call earth and air “big earth” or “big air” (waters kinda small so no big water, but he’s water)

Name tangent aside, here’s a general run down of some ideas I’ve had for him.

Air earth and water are a kind of a trio, like yes poly ghouls but as alpha and omega are bonded, these three naturally have bonded to each other and are very close. They take care of each other. He helps water and earth care for themselves physically, meanwhile he can tend to ignore his own emotional state, which is where they come in for him.

He’s a bit moody, can tend to be sarcastic but overall is pretty calm and old man ish, just wants to meditate and smoke weed with his boyfriends ya know. Imagine someone’s grandpa that constantly says “BACK IN MY DAY-“ yeah that’s air and we love him. But younger air also was kinda isolated, earth and water never super let him be but he’s more introverted definitely.

He fights w alpha a lot, tends to have physical altercations with him that create a lot of tense energy in the abbey, they’re not super allowed around each other

Honestly probably where Zeph got a bit of their attitude from mentoring under him. But air has always been beyond patient with them, and even asked earth to help him widdle a cane to make things easier for them

Also tagging this freak @divine-misfortune because most of my lore comes from weird ass convos w it where we just start making shit up.

I’m counting old water ghouls as water lake and river. Deltas lore has its own series!

Water: he’s coral reef inspired. I think he’s like a surfer bro, mostly bc it’s a bit funny but all the water ghouls are sad and angsty. He’s very sweet and laid back, has a thing with earth and air, they’re their own little throuple and they’re very important to me. Absolute himbo, air headed, really funny. Bring some light into the first round of ghouls between alpha and omegas weird possessiveness thing I think they had, air being a grumpy asshole (/aff) and earth just trying to hold everything together. He’s a sweetie.

Lake and River: I think they come as a pair once River comes along. They’re insanely possessive over each other, to the point where they don’t allow the other to be with anyone else unless their partner is there. It … it could be toxic but they’re both extremely into it so it’s fine. They’re rarely without each other.

Lake is much lighter, I think like shaggy blonde hair and dark blue eyes. All smiles. He’s the kind of guy to hum while he’s doing things. Obviously worked under water and I think some of that carefree attitude rubbed off on him.

River however is darker. Long straight pitch black hair. Piercing light blue eyes. Stubble. He’s fucking gorgeous. Lake is so very infatuated with him on first sight. He’s the quiet brooding artsy type. The type to just randomly spit wisdom about life in the middle of doing his chores or something.

Luckily they’re not obnoxious about their love in front of everyone. In public spaces resorting to standing next to each other with a simple hand hold if they’re bold. They keep their love in private, something about it feeling more special and personal that way according to River.
