Had a thought about an Eternal Super Sonic au.

After so many attempts by Eggman and other parties to use the Chaos Emeralda for evil, Sonic has had enough. He permanently fuses himself with them, staying forever in his super form.

The problem is, this is more of an entrapment for him. Nothing that would lead to a Fleetway situation, but it takes a toll. Forever energized, now stuck with immortality, and even more responsibility to protect the planet. And even the occasional whisper of the Chaos Emeralds themselves inside his mind. In a way, Sonic has given up so much of his freedom for the sake of others.

Now I really want to write something with this!

Asked other self-taught artists how they do it, got vague answers. If you actually answer this, thanks for your time.

How do you structure a program for your own self improvement as a **Sonic Comic Artist**? Yes, gesture drawings and shapes and learning values. 1st semester basics, practice them, yup. What resources do you vouch for to learn panel layout so I don't wade in the overwhelming deluge of free tutorials? How do you practice anatomy for hedgehogs when you have drilled human proportions for a decade? Specific resources would be so appreciated I would fling myself at your feet. Or you know, whatever doesn't violate your boundaries I don't know how you are about feet. Your comic inspired me, at 36, to stop fucking around with my hobby by the way. Thanks.

Study and try to reverse engineer the art of the Sonic artists you enjoy most. There is no step-by-step guide that won't lead you into stiff poses and expressions. You have to simply get a feel for how you personally enjoy drawing these characters.

Read Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. Read Making Comics by Scott McCloud. Read these books. They are THE books that contain the fundamentals of comics. Understanding Comics, specifically, was THE required reading in my major (cartooning/comics) at my art school (The School of Visual Arts).

I didn't go into things wanting to be a Sonic comic artist specifically. I barreled forward with a love of all comics, and worked hard to learned how to make all comics. If you want to be good at Sonic comics, get good at comics in general. Work up the skills to create stories with sequential art. Learn how to draw stuff that isn't Sonic, because if you're drawing Sonic comics, you are also going to be drawing so, so, so many things that aren't Sonic. Robots, trees, cars, buildings, trains. Learn all of it. Everything you can.

If you love comics, really really love comics, that love will shine through no matter what you make. Understand the medium. That will help you the most.
