“Bay.” It sounded like a croak, a rusty gate of a word I hadn’t let myself say out loud in over a year. Somehow it seemed to be one of the few words I could utter in her presence.

“Let’s not.” Her words were sharp and final, but I couldn’t be this close to her and not talk to her.

“We need to.” Training camp was a grueling non-stop thirty days I’d prepared myself for. But it also meant she could dodge me as much as she wanted. Knowing she was closer than she’d been in years and not getting to say what I needed to say to her—that would kill me.

“We don’t need to do a thing. This story”—she gestured between the two of us—“ended back in Greenwood.”

She tried to push past me, but I couldn’t let her walk away, not yet. I didn’t have a single thing I could say to get her to stay. Not in the way I wanted. Not in a way she deserved.

Staring straight ahead, she pressed her shoulder against the metal doorframe.

I needed to back off. I needed to get out of the way. But this might be the last chance I ever got to be near her.

“I’m sorry.”

Her head snapped to the side. Our bodies were so close. We were sharing the same air, passing it between us like all those nights I’d drawn her, or watched movies with her, or just felt like the luckiest guy in the world because she was beside me.

“Too fucking bad. Take that apology and shove it so far up your ass you can taste the hair on your knuckles.” Her eyes blazed. Every muscle was tight, radiating the anger she’d let loose with every syllable.

“Well that was graphic as hell.” The corners of my mouth twitched, nerves getting the better of me. She had a harder edge to her now. Or maybe it was what being around me did to her.

“I wanted to paint the picture for you.” Her voice was low and biting.

I dropped my arm and stepped out of the doorway, still not giving her a clear path out. I was wrong on so many levels, but once again, I couldn’t stop myself. “Can we talk?”

“What about how our interaction has gone so far has made you think I have a word to say to you?”

“I-I thought you might want to talk.” My palms felt like I should have sweat droplets dripping from my fingertips. There were so many things I’d told myself I’d say the next time I saw her. I’d thought I’d have more time. A solid plan in place. Two brain cells to rub together. “Clear the air.”

Her cheeks were flushed like they’d get when she’d catch me watching her in class, or after I tickled her and she gasped, panting, after finally telling me to stop. Or the way they’d gotten when we’d stood on the football field in our caps and gowns and she told me to walk away.

“About you humiliating me in front of the entire school? About sleeping with me and then breaking my heart?” Her throat worked up and down. “Or about breaking my dad’s guitar?” Her voice broke and I wanted to chop off my own hand for what I’d done.

Her dad’s guitar. Standing in the sunny, summer afternoon, surrounded by our classmates, she’d told me what I’d done to something that had been such a precious memory of her father, and I’d known that was it. She’d never forgive me, but I needed to know she was okay. “Any of it. All of it.”

“There’s nothing you can say to fix any of those things. Not a damn thing.”

4.5 Stars “The perfect beginning. The perfect story. The perfect love. But it wasn’t ours. And no amount of wishful thinking would make that the story anyone would write about us. But as messy as our story was, it was still just that—ours.”

The Sin of Kissing You picks up where the The Art of Falling For You ended, with Bay and Keyton meeting each other four years after parting on not so good terms. This book was highly anticipated for me after reading the first installment but honestly I was slightly worried that the sequels might not live up to my expectations but Maya didn't disappoint albeit not without the angst and lots of yearning.

Bay and Keyton are meeting each other again at a time in their lives where they are at crossroads on how the rest of their future is going to go. Bay has graduated from college and is trying to decide on which accounting firm job offer to accept while also trying to come to terms with leaving music behind. Keyton has been picked up by Los Angeles' professional football team and has to go through a month of football training camp to see if he gets picked to the team for the next season. The football training camp takes place at a local college where Bay happens to work as a dormitory's assistant resident director.

In this book we find out more about Keyton and it clear that he's still haunted by his actions and he has still not properly addressed his childhood trauma. We also see more about Bay's insecurities about pursuing music as a career.

What I particularly loved about this book was the way both Bay and Keyton's character growth is portrayed throughout the book. It's not written as a one-all-done-all-magic-wand-waving and a person is all changed and perfect that many stories seem to suffer from. Instead, we see that although Keyton has changed from the boy he was in high school, he is still struggling, refusing to address his childhood trauma. We see Bay working through her fear of commiting to music and taking a leap of faith. We see them both trying to figure out this new relationship dynamics given their history and uncertain futures.

I am fully ready and excited for the last installment, The Hate of Loving You to read more about Bay and Keyton and see how their story ends.

He wanted to pretend he was a nice guy now? I ran through my first day at Greenwood Senior High. The vivid details craved an excruciatingly clear memory of just the kind of guy he was. Even if he didn’t remember, I certainly did.

If only that had been the end of it. But it wasn’t. He was back that afternoon and mom insisted I take him a glass of lemonade.

I kicked his leg and he slid out with grease marks on his cheeks and hands that only made him hotter.

The universe’s unfairness had never been clearer than Dare looking like a cover model wheeling out from under my mom’s junker of a car. If I’d had a team of stylists and beauty professionals dress me and do my makeup, I’d never be more than catalog cute. He was super-model searing without even trying.

“From my mom.” I shoved the glass toward him.

“It’s not from you? Did you make it yourself?” He set the wrench down on the concrete and drew his knees up, resting his back against the side panel of the car. His gaze locked onto mine, holding it and not letting me look away.

My pulse pounded, and my stomach back flipped into next week. “Just take it.”

“Did you poison it?” He lifted an eyebrow.

“Yes, I dropped in one of my cyanide capsules that I keep on hand for annoying neighbors.”

He didn’t say a word, only let me stand there with my arm extended, not making a move to take the glass.

My hand shook. I jerked it back and took a sip. “See, not poisoned.” I took a step closer and held it out again.

His gray eyes twinkled with amusement. He shot up, so his body brushed against mine on the way up, not trying to make room at all for my personal space. His fingers curled over mine before he pulled the glass from my grasp.

Instead of drinking from the side of glass closest to him, he turned it in his hold and took a sip from my side of the glass. My lip prints melted away by his. He didn’t drop his gaze or look away.

He froze me in my tracks like a deer caught in headlights after a long night in the forest.

“Delicious.”

Review:

That last line was genius omg, I kept waiting for the connection and they gave up, but that was genius omg. Yeah, I am ready for everything the rest of this trilogy is gonna throw at me. The Art of Falling For You is the first book in a trilogy that covers Dare and Bay's story. Dare is a popular football player who is ready to leave his town and never look back and Bay is an introvert who is trying to deal with the loss of her father whilst also figuring out how to achieve her dreams. Their story in this book is bittersweet and you know that from the onset going in as it begins with a surprise meeting between the both of them. I loved everything about this book, Maya is one of those authors that knows how to write balanced stories for both protagonists and this book is no exception. Bay and Dare's relationship is written so beautifully that you can't but want more. I can't wait to read more about their journey in the next books. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review!

Review:

Throne of Vengeance concludes Rai and Kyle's journey. I was so excited to see where this story was going to go especially after where we ended off in the first book and for the most part the first half of this book delivered. Like the first book, this was also a quick read and a page turner. The first half resolves the cliffhanger from the first book a little bit too fast-paced I will say. The second half deals with the overarching plot and gives some reveals about some side characters that I'm hoping to read about their stories. Overall, a good conclusion to Rai and Kyle's story

Review:

3.5 Stars Throne of Power follows Rai and Kyle's journey. Kyle is back in Rai's life after a prolonged unexplained absence and after a turn on events, they have to get married to each other and let's just Rai is not too happy about that. This book was a quick read and a page turner. I liked the romance between Rai and Kyle, it is clear to see the chemistry between them even after quite a while.I feel like why Rai and Kyle's romance works so well in this book as opposed to other books with this trope is that both of them are on equal footing and it doesn't feel like there's some weird power dynamic going on. I also quite liked the individual progression of both characters, Rai being protective of her family and going above and beyond for them and Kyle quite bent on his revenge journey even when his entire back story is not fully revealed as of yet. The overarching plot felt underdeveloped though and this is where I felt that this book should have been longer. Overall, I quite liked this book and I am looking forward to the conclusion of Rai and Kyle's story. P.S. that cliffhanger was done really well.

“My toes are freezing.” She wiggled them against the hard, dark concrete.

I glanced down at her bare feet. If I offered to carry her inside, she’d probably punch me in the balls, so I bit the inside of my cheek, watching for glass or splintered wood on the porch steps.

Inside, I got her straight to my room and handed her a t-shirt and some boxers before I sent her to shower.

Her quietness told me just how much she needed to get under the covers—for once she didn’t have a quip or a biting comment.

The stench of smoke hung heavy in my room, more noticeable now that we were away from the fire. I sniffed my shirt and jerked away from the burning smell. The last thing I wanted was for her to walk in here and be hit with the stink of char.

I took off my smoke-soaked clothes and grabbed my towel off the back of the door, wrapping it around my waist. I dumped the clothes outside my door and grabbed fresh ones.

The water in the bathroom shut off and the door opened, the hot, humid air billowing into the hallway.

She stumbled back in and spotted me, freezing mid-hair-drying.

Dammit, maybe I should’ve waited to take my clothes off until I’d gotten to the bathroom, but it wasn’t like she hadn’t seen me in just swim trunks before. At least I’d gotten the towel on and she hadn’t walked in on me totally naked like she had last summer after our water balloon battle.

“My clothes smelled like smoke too. I’m hopping in the shower.”

Seeing her in my clothes did something to me—something that couldn’t be contained by a towel. I clutched my sweats and t-shirt in front of my now-straining erection. My blood pounded in my veins and I didn’t know how I was supposed to spend the night lying beside her. Maybe I should take the couch. I rushed out the doorway, poking my head back in.

“Get into the bed. I’ll be back in a few.” I flicked off the light, blanketing the room in darkness aside from the glow from the hallway.

The shower was quick and efficient and I kept myself from relieving the pressure that had built up when I saw her in my clothes. I cranked it to cold until my cock deflated and I could end my freezing torture.

Climbing out, I picked up her clothes from the floor and dropped them outside my bedroom door. I’d wash them in the morning and see if a gallon of detergent got the smell out.

If it didn’t, I wasn’t opposed to her wearing more of my clothes until we got her some new ones or she got to go back to her place to see what could be salvaged.

There was no sound in my room. For a second, I thought she might’ve gone downstairs to get something to eat, but then I heard her soft, gentle breaths coming from my bed.

I hung my towel up and crossed the room.

Marisa was spread out like a starfish, taking up most of the bed.

Chuckling, I took her arm and put my hand on her waist, rolling her toward the wall. She grumbled, but let me move her, shifting her pillow and clutching it to her chest.

If I weren’t a glutton for punishment, I’d have taken a pillow and blanket and gone downstairs to the couch of torture, or I’d have nudged her even further toward the wall and put my back against hers. But I couldn’t help myself.

Sliding into the bed, I curled my body around hers, wrapping my arm around her. Just for tonight. Just because of how close I’d come to losing her. Just because I couldn’t help myself.

Her hair smelled like me. As much as I loved that, I’d have to pick up some of her shampoo and soap when I got a chance.

“Night, Marisa.” Closing my eyes, I breathed deeply, matching my breaths to hers.

Tonight, I’d hold her in my arms.

Tomorrow, I’d figure out how to deal with being in love with the coach’s daughter.

Review:

“I love her.” He squeezed the back of his neck, shaking his head. “Will you still love her in a year? In two years?” “I’ve loved her since we were fifteen. It’s never going away.” I have been waiting for Marisa and LJ's book since they were first introduced in Fearless King and let me say I was not disappointed. Best friends to lovers romance books tend to be either really amazing or a complete let down for me and this falls into the former and has leapt into one of my favourites best friends to lovers' books and definitely my favourite of the series. I was pleasantly surprised by the execution of the plot in this book. Both Marisa and LJ's individual stories were balanced and strong. I loved reading about Marisa's relationship with her parents (it's still fuck them both from me idc) and how it all connects to how she currently navigates the world paralleled with LJ's relationship with his own parents. Their shared history together and how they are both willing to sacrifice for each other while pining for each whilst thinking it's unrequited elevates the romance for me. Review:

Lilac follows Bound, a rock band who's recently lost their guitarist and Braxton is sort of forced upon the rest of band to fill the deceased's shoes. Thus begins a game of wills between Braxton and her new teammates and the tour they are about to embark on does nothing to help. It takes some time to pick up but after that it's really engaging. Some of the subplots were really intriguing and I wished some more time were spent fleshing those out. *ARC provided by SocialButterfly in exchange for an honest review!

Review:

*3.5 Stars* Rise of a Queen is a good conclusion in the Kingdom duet series. We pick right where we left off from in Reign of a king and see Aurora trying to navigate being thrown in the spotlight once again and having to deal with her father. I liked seeing Aurora interact with Elsa, wished there were more scenes with them. Loved Layla's and Aurora's friendship, wished there was more interaction between Layla's family and Aurora, here's hoping Layla gets her own book. Overall a good ending.

Review Reign of a King follows Aurora who is trying to save her company from bankruptcy by negotiating a deal with Ethan Steele but to do that she has to meet him at Aiden's wedding while also avoiding both Aiden and Jonathan who happen to be her dead sister's son and husband. Unfortunately, she does run into them and it opens up a whole can of worms as she has been 'in hiding' for about eleven years. What intrigued me about this book was the subplot going on in Aurora's personal life, the reason she has been hiding for years and I wished it was fleshed out more in this book but I am guessing it will be in the sequel. Overall a good book and I am looking forward to the conclusion.

Review:

Power is snatching the first move in a chessboard so the opponent always follows your lead, not the other way around. Rule of a Kingdom is really intriguing and it makes you excited to see what is in store for the next books. You are captivated from the very first words and it doesn't let up till the end. It does a fantastic job of setting up the character, plots and pieces of the story to come. A great preview indeed and I certainly can't wait to read Reign of a King now.
