The mountain frees me from entitled feelings - The Tree Ring, "Hummingbird Pause" - @salty_mike took a bunch of photos at a beautiful lookout right at the start of the Chiang Dao summit hike. With the recent rain, the trail, which is only open a few months out of the year, has been closed. 02/327: I had the oppourtunity to hike to the Chiang Dao summit this weekend and it was beautiful. The processes and bureaucratic mess to actually get on the mountain was definitely worth the hassle after seeing the sun set and rise over the vast array of young peaks and impenetrable green. Along with the hike, hearing the dead silence that accompanies freezing mornings, while waiting for the sunrise, was something I've been missing having not been in winter for a few years. 3/220: I'm not sure how the #creativeprocess works for other artists, but for myself, I'll have lines or concepts appear and ensare my brain until I, at the least, write them on a page. The piece I'm working on currently is called "Tourist Towns." It's inspired by a lot of what I'm seeing take place back where I'm from. The line which inspired said piece is "Singing cowboy songs with girls we ain't known too long, who'll never know the depths of this valley through the season's change." In my head it's a romantic piece, but one about searching for lasting love. 03/216: We've given a negative context to the word retreat. We meet it, with notions of failure, of fleeing, of not being able to face what may be brought before us on any given day. But this connotation, it's short-sighted. Elevated by those who mistake courage for cowardice, whom are quick to bare arms, yet slow to unveil the soul. Whom only see problems as enemies; the riddle can only be sovled with weapons. No, in retreating, one learns a lesson. Hindsight is a beautiful guide, if we chose to reside in her grasps, long enough to hear her message told. Undressing us of ego's cloak, unbridling us of opressive yolk. When I wrote this poem, I did it as an ode to those who have inspired me to be a poet and musician. I’ve always seen it as a positive, more inspirational piece. Last Thursday, I delivered it with this mentality in mind. The next day, I ran into someone who saw me perform, and told me that my piece had really hit them hard. As opposed to it being inspirational, for him, it was actually more of a wake-up call, delivered via an emotional punch to the gut. The person had found themselves in a lethargic period, and was having a hard time getting out of bed. They were struggling with depression even though, in their words, nothing really bad was happening. They were stuck in a hole that was only getting deeper. Hearing this piece about others dealing with their own demons through creation made them look at their own situation in a different light. Though it was a tough pill to swallow, it was a message he said he needed to hear, and ended up thanking me for the poetic sucker punch. Art is a funny thing. Much like our words and our actions, we can only create it. We don’t decide how it will be digested or viewed by others. If someone’s art touches you AND you have the ability to tell the artist that, tell the artist that. 03/204: This little bit o' ukulele noodling is from my poem "The Path of Totality." I performed it last week at a monthly event I host in Chiang Mai called Words Will Win. It's amazing to watch these videos after a performance. While on stage it's a crapshoot. You can have moments where you completely lose yourself to your art, with no care in the world but the notes and melody. Or, you can feel so stuck on something you feel you messed up on, falling into a world of self conscious turmoil...until you watch the video and realize no one noticed that one note you slipped on. 03/183: Don't knock it until you try it, stay with me. Step 1: Take a fresh coconut. Cut that S open, pour the water into the blender then scrap out the meat and follow suit. Step 2, 3, and 4: add a little ginger, half an avocado, and a few sweet bananas. Are you ready for the curve ball? Step 5: add a red bell pepper. Crazy? Maybe. Delicious? Yes. I've been dabbling with eating raw since returning to CM and I've seen both great bodily changes as well as difficulties adapting. The other kicker is an immense change in lifestyle. Becoming a vegetarian already saw how I aproached the day-to-day altered mightily and with raw food, these changes only multiply.
