One thing that swayed our decision to start the trip in Spain was the timing and proximity of the legendary bullfighting festival of San Fermín. San Sebastián is less than two hours from Pamplona, where the annual festival is held. San Fermín is a serious festival, up there with Oktoberfest in Munich, Carnival in Brazil, and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Revelers come from all over the world for nine consecutive days of debauchery. The event is often criticized by animal rights activists as being a brutal display of cruelty, which it is. Let’s make that clear from the beginning.  But it is also an essential element of Basque identity. Naz had read too many books of Hemingway’s on the topic to justify staying away, and SB couldn’t pass up the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

On a beautiful sunny afternoon, we loaded up on snacks, espressos, and packed into a rented compact SUV (SEAT Arona). We got on the road, Naz zipping along mountain ranges with rapid lane changes. Driving in Spain is hurried but orderly. Drivers are quick to point out mistakes to each other. Right before Pamplona, we decided to exit the highway to look for some country cooking. We meandered along one-lane roads until we came to a checkpoint. A police officer gestured us over to the side of the road. Naz was handed a small plastic object, told to unwrap it, and plug it into a device held by the officer. Once he figured out what was going on, he blew into the device. The policeman nodded approvingly, “zero percent” he said, and waved for us to proceed. Naz noted his commitment to being the designated driver for the day.  Meanwhile, SB wondered about sparkling wine options available at the festival. As we started to drive off, we heard commotion behind us. Cops scrambled, pointed up the road, and jumped into their patrol cars.  Someone yelled “rosada”, meaning pink. “What did I do wrong this time” Naz thought, pre-conditioned to always feel slightly guilty around law enforcement. As patrol cars flew past us we saw a red car turn the corner ahead of us. As relief gave way to curiosity, we followed. By the time we reached the scene of the chase, the car was surrounded, occupants were nowhere in sight. Clearly Spanish police are serious about DUIs during the fiesta.

Pamplona is a charming city during the day. The merrymakers from the night before are sleeping off their hangovers on park benches or slowly nursing drinks in small groups on the lawns. Crews are hauling off remnants of last night’s festivities: bottles, cups, balloons, signs, confetti, masks, costumes. Brass bands and entertainers of all sorts are playing on every corner. This is when the families are out. Children are everywhere; people are smiling, dancing, and enjoying life. The crowds are a sea of red and white.  Every person dressed in festival attire: head-to-toe white with a red scarf around the waist and a red handkerchief tied around the neck.

Each day of the festival is punctuated by two events involving bulls. The first one is the encierro, the Bull Run, which happens in the morning. Hundreds of people run along the bulls through crowded cobblestone streets. This is where injuries are commonly caused by trampling, or occasionally by severe gorings. The second is the main event, la corrida, the evening bullfight. This is the showcase for professional matadors.We bought tickets for the corrida after several rounds of friendly negotiations with scalpers. There are essentially two types of tickets, sombra or sol, seats in a shaded part of the stadium or in the sun. There are other distinctions, such as level of rowdiness based on the section you sit in, but any seat in the stadium guarantees a certain level of pandemonium. Our tickets were in the cheaper sol section, on the less-rowdy side where we felt safer with Maya.

As soon as we found our seats, we were bombarded by the intensity of the sun. Music and noise added to the disorienting feeling. Every corner of the stadium was alive and bustling. The spectators have been drinking all day yet they tirelessly lug big bags of ice, coolers, and bottles of every sort into the stadium—there are no limitations on what you can bring. People lit up entire grills and were barbecuing in the stands. SB uncorked a bottle of sparkling wine that is sold ice-cold on every corner. The spirit of the event took Maya as well. She kept cheering, clapping, and laughing, and ended up making friends with a group of 20-something locals. They kept mixing gin drinks and dropping ice into SB’s cup. One of the young men, having been to many bullfights and speaking pretty good English, gave us pointers about the different stages of the fight. This helped us understand, in a small way, the spectacle we witnessed that evening.  

Although there is certainly something unnerving and melancholy about the whole spectacle of a bullfight, there is also undeniable energy, elegance, and pomp to it. Withholding any moral judgments we can say that it was one-of-a-kind experience that left remarkable impression on all us and will color our memory of Spain for a long time.

April 12th, 2017 I'm feeling love in the air, dreams coming true, and desires being granted. I grew up with a mother who is truly bohemian.  Love is the answer, and this, like everything, is a phase that will pass.  She was a flower child in the sense that her organic connection to people and the earth was and is at the center of her being. She blessed me with a sense of freedom that I have recently come to really appreciate.  While I wanted to shave my legs, and she wasn't having it, I love that now I know I can decide how to present myself to the world, often without feeling societal obligations or pressures.  So, inspired by all the festival images and fashion, here's to the bohemian in all of us, that follows our heart, pays close attention and honors our feelings, and let's face it, has a really great time! xoxo, Cecelia
