I attended a performance of this and it was easily my all time favorite concert. Bang on a Can is an amazing chamber group dedicated to new music. I met the group, they let us look at the score and have an impromptu performance using or voices. New music is becoming absent of the hierarchy of 19th centuries and previous. This particular piece by Julia Wolfe is a beautiful example of organized cacophony with a calming interlude complimented by a singing cellist. The end gives me chills every time.

Film music anyone? Folk music is such a fascinating representation of a culture, yet how does one musically represent a country that doesn't exist? Read on to find how the mix of authentic foreign influences and creative genius can make an imaginary country real.

A very interesting solo violin work by a Peruvian composer. One can hear fiddle inspiration. It is a very interesting, modern take on a Baroque form which is very 20th century in nature.

A cello concerto/opera (yes, you read that correctly).  This is a completely mesmerizing watch/listen.  Are the cellist and the woman in the film the same person?  Do they exist in co-realities or are they separate people entirely?  Does the music drive the film or does the film drive the music?  I personally love the feeling of uncertainty after a piece; I love a piece that makes me think and interpret.

Exactly why I want to be a musicologist.  Few things are more satisfying than uncovering and discovering.  Classical black artists are also grossly underrepresented but have so much to offer – their creativity comes from their plethora of unique experiences, heritage, and their pioneering and synthesis of several techniques and genre among: jazz, ragtime, spirituals, scat singing, call and response, and so much more.

The Duke understood that music is art.  It is meant to evolve, challenge, inspire, evoke.
