2019 Vietti Barbera d鈥橝sti from Trevigne. Nice acidity and delicious chery fruit. Subtle tannins and oak. Well balanced. Excellent to drink now. I paired it with ragu egg pasta, but it has enough structure to pair with some red meat. Found this bottle at Costco for $13.99. What a steal from such a reputable wine maker for a bottle of such delicious wine from Piemonte. Highly recommended! GAJA鈥檚 Gaia & Rei. 2016 Chardonnay. It鈥檚 fresh and bright. Citrus and melon. The oak is soft and subtly whispering in the background. Many consider this Chardonnay from Gaja the best Chardonnay from Italy! (Some from Friuli are excellent, too.) Gaja made some adjustment to their 2016 vintage, making this Chardonnay even better than their previous vintage. It will get better as it ages. We paired this wine with many amazing Alba white truffle dishes from @anticacoronareale. The pairing was incredible. This wine is now one of my favorite pairing with white truffle dishes. Only at the last most rich dish, which was baked eggs in cheese and cream with shaved white truffle, that the wine became too light. That dish needs something stronger. Montruc barbera d鈥橝sti would鈥檝e worked better. Roasted suckling pig in Segovia. Central Spain is known for roasted meat, especially baby lamb and suckling pigs. In Segovia, suckling pig is a regional art and a must-have for visitors without pork restriction. The baby pork is so tender that traditionally, chefs would cut the pig with a regular dining plate in front of the guests to show how tender the meat is. This particular suckling pig is from the restaurant Jose Maria. The meat is tender and juicy, yet with slight resistance at the end of the bite. A soft al dante if you will. The skin is crisp and crunchy. Incredibly delicious. We paired it with a glass of young Ribera del Duero, which is the local wine of choice in the area. Suckling pig is a must have when visiting Segovia and Jose Maria does it expertly. Tortilla de patatas. The Spanish egg omelet with potatoes and onion. The ideal Spanish tortilla would have a soft and slightly liquid center, which is hard to find in a restaurant out there, even in Spain. On my quest to finding the best tortilla de patata, I finally found it in #flashflash , a specialty restaurant in Barcelona that makes their tortillas to orders. The beautiful omelet jiggled as the friendly waiter placed it on my table, and upon cutting through the omelet, it was like cutting through an outside envelope that was holding all this sweet and savory custard jello, and the liquid just flowed out. It was incredible. This is the best Spanish omelet I've ever had and it's worth the extra few subway stops to come here and try it. With just the simple ingredients of eggs, potatoes, onions, and olive oil, they made something absolutely extraordinary. I paired it with a glass of delicious fruity cava, Anna Codorn铆u, and the pairing was great. They makes many different types of tortilla, including a black truffle ones. 2010 Lagar do Merens from Ribeiro in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain. It's an aged white wine that expresses well its full body, well rounded balance of apple, peach and oak, structured and long finish. Because of its structured full body, it was paired with a piece of steak and the pairing worked really well. It had no trouble standing up to the flavor of the red meat. An aged good quality full body white wine is not as easy to come by since most white wines are consumed when young, so it was a real treat to come across this bottle. Only 2270 bottles were made, and this was the 2266th bottle! Portuguese egg tarts. Pasteis de Belem. This bakery is the original bakery that created this. Only the egg tarts from this bakery are allowed to be called Pasteis de Belem. All other egg tarts in Lisbon are called Pasteis de Nata. These Pasteis de Belem have flaky crust, silky smooth custard filling and the burnt top that gives them a creme br没l茅e style caramel flavor. Because it doesn't use as much egg yolks and instead of heavy cream, they use milk and syrup, so each of them only contains around 150 calories. This is a must have if you ever find yourself in Lisbon. Agerre Txakolina 2016. Produced on the hills of Basque Country facing the ocean, this natural bubble wine (without being carbonated artificially) is clean, crisp, dry, a little citrusy but also with mineral and slight saltiness. It was delicious when paired with sardine with fresh pineapple and mustard seed sauce. The wine offered a good contrast to the tropical sweetness from the pineapple and balanced the mustard sauce well. They worked together to elevate the sardine to the next level. It was a great pairing. Because of the dryness, crispness and the slight salty note, it will be great with seafood that has sweet fruity sauce with it. Agerre does not produce a lot. If you see other txakoli, they should work in a similar way. Spanish flan. This is the most luxurious, perfectly made flan I've ever had. Spaniards know their custards. It's smooth and silky, not overly sweet but enough to satisfy that end-of-the-meal sugar craving. Fragrant with cream, egg, vanilla, and hint of cinnamon. The extra bit of whipped cream mixed with caramel sauce pushed it to the next level. We paired it with Pasas de Malaga, the dessert wine made from raisin in nearby Malaga. It was just perfect. Roasted leg of baby lamb. This dish is the specialty of Castilian y Lyon region in central Spain. However, I had this dish in this southern Spain town of Benahavis, a town that is known as the gourmet center in Andalusia, the southern region of Spain. This leg of baby lamb was cooked to perfection. The meat was tender, juicy, fully of delicious meat flavor but without a strong gamy taste. It was the best lamb dish I have ever had. We paired this dish with a glass of young Ribera del Duero that still has a lot of red and black berry fruit in it. They worked really well together. If you ever visit Andalusia around Malaga and Marbella, I highly recommend you rent a car or take a 25-minute taxi ride and visit Benahavis. Alvero Palacios 2015 Les Terrasses. It's still young and fresh with nice dark fruit profile but also mineral and with subtle tannin. Dark berries. Bold and nicely balanced. I had this wine with jamon and Catalan white pork sausage, which is quite fatty. The wine handled them without any problem. Really delicious wine. I do think that if given some aging time, it will be even better. I had no problem drinking and enjoying it now though. :-) Here in Barcelona, it's about 20 euro per bottle. Tenuta San Guido 2011 Guidalberto Toscana IGT. 60% Cab and 40% Merlot. This is the second wine from one of the most well-known super Tuscan producers. I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the wine is. Dark fruit on the nose with a bit of dust and subtle oakiness. On the palate, it is full body, balanced tannin, plum, black berries, and long finish. We had this wine with prime rib and it paired really well. If you have never tried a super Tuscan wine, this is a great bottle to try from one of the best super Tuscan wine producers in the region.
