Portraits of Balinese men ::

While in Bali I spent some time documenting some of the serious problems that the small island has with it’s rubbish disposal systems. A friend and local resident, who has spent much of his life working to resolve the issues at play here, took me around to experience it firsthand. Hidden behind the large western corporate businesses and hotels are mountains of discarded rubbish. Families will pay to live on these dump sites in hopes of making money finding salvageable or recyclable items. Children are raised in these deadly environments. Families literally live, work, eat, and play right on or in the rubbish. On his routine visits to the people living on these trash sites, he mentions that he always seems to find that somebody has died from sickness or disease. On such a beautiful island, It was shocking to find such appalling living conditions found hidden right out of sight in one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in the world.
