For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 Are you dealing with fears that make you feel helpless and hopeless? Fear is one of the greatest weapons satan uses against us, as it attacks our minds. He tells us everything that is contrary to the word of God. How can we fight against such thoughts? By believing the truth of the second part of the verse. God through His Holy Spirit has given us power, love and a sound mind, not in our strength but in His. Lord, teach me to live a victorious life through the empowering love and strength of Your Holy Spirit. Break those strongholds of fear that bind me up and keep me from experiencing the peace and joy that You desire for me. In Jesus’ name I ask, Amen.

actually the most perfect fic i have ever read GO READ IT RN. 🤭🤭🤭
The Neighbor Across the Street pt. 6
Mike Schmidt x Babysitter!f!Reader
part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5
wc: 3.2k
warnings: none! basically pure fluff (as always, lmk if there’s anything i’ve missed)
summary: the neighbor across the street needs a babysitter, so you take the job, not knowing what’s in store for you as you grow closer to the siblings. AU where nothing bad ever happens at the pizzeria.
A/N: this is it 🥹 the ending mike and y/n deserve! everything in italics are flashbacks. i cried tears of joy writing this, i hope you all enjoy this well deserved fluff and fun 🫶 happy reading! btw… u might wanna listen to “yellow” by coldplay towards the end ;)
——————————————————————————
It probably wasn’t the ideal first date, but you wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Technically, you and Mike had been dating for about 2 months now, but he wanted to continue working on himself and focusing on work before deciding to officially take you on a date anywhere. He wanted to save up enough money to do something fun and be able to bring Abby with you guys. It wouldn’t be the same without her there and you couldn’t agree any more.
“Abs what’re you most excited for?” Mike asked, looking at her through the rear view mirror. You sat next to him, holding his hand as you looked out of the window.
“Everything!” she squealed with excitement.
“You can’t decide on one thing you are most excited for?” you asked laughing.
This wasn’t just a big deal for you, but Abby as well. She always wanted to visit an amusement park. The semester had ended a few weeks ago for you and it was Abby’s last day of school just a few days earlier, so what better way to start the summer. After your big conversation with Mike, the siblings also worked on their relationship with each other. It was not easy by all means, but they were closer than ever before. Mike felt it was fair that he did this for Abby after all they’ve been through. He knew how much she’d wanted this and he found a way to make it happen. Anything for his little sister.
“Maybe the big rollercoasters. Those look fun.” Abby said grinning.
“You aren’t nervous at all? What if you’re not tall enough?” Mike asked her.
“Y/n told me I was tall enough!”
Mike playfully hit your arm.
“Okay to be fair I told her I think she’s tall enough. Have you been finishing your dinners Abs?” you asked chuckling.
“Duh, I had to be tall enough to ride the big rides.”
You looked over at Mike, smiling, knowing he was the one who came up with the idea to get Abby to finish her meals.
“I don’t want to eat!” you heard Abby shout from her room as you finished up making some grilled cheese. It was something you heard often from her voice, so it wasn’t surprising. You were used to making a meal and letting it sit on a plate all evening to get cold until just before bed when she’d suddenly be hungry.
You put it on a plate, the plastic wrap already in your hands as you assumed she wouldn’t be eating it now. Suddenly the little girl was right in front of you snatching the plate from your hands.
“I thought I heard you say you didn’t want to eat now?” you questioned her as she sat down quickly.
“I told her that if she doesn’t eat, she can’t ride the adult rides at the amusement park.” a voice said from the other room.
“Is that so?” you stepped out of the kitchen to investigate further. You found Mike sitting in his usual spot on the recliner in the living room.
“They stay tiny forever!” he said once more for good measure, you noticed Abby began eating faster.
“What are you up to now Michael?” you asked as you stood behind him, your hand finding it’s way into his messy dark curls.
“Wow legal name and everything, am I that suspicious?” he said looking up at you.
His brown eyes were no longer filled with that hint of sadness and exhaustion you always noticed. They always seemed a little brighter since you started dating. It was something you noticed immediately.
“You’re not very good at this you know.” you had to hold in a laugh to not make him feel too bad.
“I got the tickets.” he said whispering, trying not to show how excited he was about this.
“Did you really?” now you had to try and hold in your excitement too, you didn’t want to spoil the surprise with Abby in the room right next to you.
“Yup, they’re for the end of May. So a little end of school gift for both of you.” you could tell how happy and proud he was for finally saving enough money to treat both you and Abby. He had been waiting for so long to finally say he had done it.
“Mike she’s going to be so happy.” you placed a kiss on the top of his head.
“I know.” he looked over at her, still scarfing down her food. “Thought I could use that little trick to get her to eat dinner tonight. I promise I won’t use it too often.”
“I don’t buy that for a second Mike.”
“I still have time to return your ticket you know-“
He was interrupted by your lips on his as you leaned over the back of the seat to reach him. It was short but long enough for him to get the point. Once you pulled away, you sat with your chin resting on the back of the seat, just staring at Mike still playing with his hair.
“Can I have more food Y/n?” Abby shouted from the table.
“Sure Abs.” you replied, still staring at your boyfriend, which still felt crazy to think let alone say out loud.
“Stop kissing my brother Y/n, it’s gross.”
“Abs you’re the reason this exists, besides I’m not even kissing him. Not anymore.” you got up, lightly ruffling Mikes hair, saying that last part quietly so Abby wouldn’t hear.
The car ride to the amusement park was long, but it felt like it went by in a breeze with all of the random conversations the three of you had.
Once you got into the park and found your way around, you realized Abby wasn’t messing around. She immediately found the biggest rollercoaster possible.
“You sure you’re brave enough Abs?” Mike asked her. He was clearly getting nervous about it.
“Of course I am Mike!” Abby was the happiest kid in the world, not an ounce of fear in her.
You and Mike followed behind her, your hands laced together.
“Don’t be so nervous Mike, she’s gonna love it trust me.” you said, attempting to reassure him.
“I know.” he sighed. “But what if she hates it?”
“Abby’s one of the most adventurous and daring kids I’ve ever met. You’re never gonna be able to get her to leave here tonight.” you smiled, squeezing his hand. “Are you sure you aren’t scared?”
“Yeah right… I could never.” he sarcastically rolled his eyes at you.
Abby absolutely loved the rollercoaster and you weren’t entirely surprised that Mike did not love it as much. The ride photo was a hit for you and Abby. Abby was having the time of her life, sitting with you, while Mike sat behind with the most terrified look on his face. You and Abby spent a little too long laughing at the photo, Abby making sure to mock Mike as usual. The three of you continued on your adventure for the day as you walked hand in hand with Mike once again, Abby following next to you.
“I thought you said you liked rollercoasters Mike?” Abby questioned.
“Yeah, like ten years ago.” he replied, his voice ever so slightly still shaking from the adrenaline.
“Mike you were only like 14 years old ten years ago.” you were still chuckling at him. “Stop acting like such a grumpy old man.”
“Y/n called you an old man!” Abby started laughing at your accidental diss.
“Yeah, old man is a new low Y/n.”
“I didn’t mean it like that!” you tried defending yourself, but there was no coming back from this one.
“Mhm…” you knew Mike wasn’t buying it. You also knew exactly what he was fishing for.
Something you found out about the siblings as you continued to get to know them more was their ability to get what they wanted whenever they wanted it. They were both extremely good at it, too.
“Y/n! Can I pleaseee stay up tonight?” Abby begged you as you cleaned up her toys from the living room.
You looked at the clock on the wall that read 9:08.
“Abs, it’s only 9:08 you still have 20 more minutes to read or draw in your room.” you said, still finishing up picking up toys off the ground.
“Yeah, but I want to hang out with you!” she ran to the ground to latch onto your leg, not letting you move anymore.
“I know Abby, but your brother told me you gotta be in bed by 9:30. You can’t get up in the mornings when I let you stay up.”
“Pleaseee Y/n? Now that Mike is your boyfriend, you’re technically my mom now.”
“I don’t think that’s how it works-“ you were slightly embarrassed and intrigued that Abby really thought of you in that way.
“And if you’re technically my mom now, you can make up your own rules!”
You looked at the girl on the ground, still not allowing you movement. She gave you the most heart wrenching puppy dog eyes you couldn’t say no to.
“Alright, fine.” you sighed, smiling. “But only until 10, got it?”
“Got it!” she leaped off the ground, doing your special handshake with you as she got up.
You didn’t realize how late the two of you ended up staying up, it was now 11:30 and Abby was out like a light. The two of you were still on the couch in the living room. She looked way too cozy and you didn’t want to wake her up by moving her to her bed, so the two of you stayed there. You grabbed a blanket from the back of the couch and placed it over the two of you.
It was moments like these you cherished most with Abby. She was probably going to be a pain in the ass to wake up the next morning. Mike was also probably going to call you at 7:30am the next day to come wake her up yourself because he “wasn’t the one who stayed up till midnight playing pillow fights with her.” Regardless, these moments were the best. You loved spending quality time with Abby as if she were your own sister. You knew how much you meant to her and if staying up till midnight with her is what makes her happy, you were gonna do it with her. Maybe not every night, but if she really wanted to, Abs always found a way to your heart.
At around 6am, a door quietly opened. The sun was just beginning to shine through the windows of the house. Mike set down his things before he walked towards the living room. He stopped in his tracks when he noticed you and Abby sound asleep on the couch. He quietly chuckled to himself, he knew exactly how the two of you ended up like that.
He couldn’t really be upset though. He knew how much Abby loved you and needed you to be there for her. He also couldn’t forget how lucky he was to have you as his girlfriend. The two of you became “official” just a few weeks ago, but Mike still felt like the luckiest guy in the world to have you by his side.
He sat down in he usual spot on the recliner across from the couch. You started slowly waking up as the sun began hitting your eyes from the windows. You rubbed your eyes as you oriented yourself with where you were. Through your still blurry vision you could just barely make out that Mike was sitting in his chair.
“Good morning Mikey.” you said quietly through a yawn, careful not to wake up Abby just yet.
“Morning babe.” he said with a small smile. “Let me guess, another sleepover night?”
“How did you know?” you said pretending to be surprised.
“Don’t worry about it Y/n. Long as you guys are happy, I’m happy.”
“Are you still going to make me wake her up when she doesn’t want to get up?”
“Of course I am. Still makes me happy to know Abs doing well when I’m not around, and I get to see you just a little longer before you have to leave for classes.”
“Well in that case, I’ll do girls night with Abby every night.” you were starting to get up from the couch, sitting up now stretching the sleepiness out of you.
“You’re too cute Y/n.”
“Mike, stop.” you buried your face into your hands. You had to be honest, you were still getting used to all this dating stuff. As much as his little compliments made you feel like prettiest girl in the world, you still didn’t know how control your reactions over them.
A small smirk was forming on his face.
“Make me.”
You looked up from your hands so quickly. You never realized how he was exactly like his sister. They both knew exactly how to get what they wanted. You got up slowly to not wake Abby, smiling and rolling your eyes, realizing you give in way too easily for these siblings.
You carefully walked over to Mike and squeezed yourself next to him on the chair (or you attempted to, it was more you sitting on him rather than the couch.)
You wrapped your arms around his neck and he pulled you in closer. Your lips met his and everything felt perfect. It always did, it just felt right. It was like the two of you were meant to be, always and forever. After probably a little too long, you finally had to pull away from him. The two of you sat with your foreheads pressed together, admiring one another.
“How are you and Abby always so good at getting what you want?” you finally broke the comfortable silence.
“You’re just too nice to ever say no Y/n/n.” he brushed a strand of your hair behind your ear.
“And you and Abby are just difficult.” you said through a small laugh.
He pulled you in for one more kiss, the two of you smiling through it. When he pulled away he placed one more gentle kiss on your forehead. You let your head fall onto his shoulder, his left arm pulling you closer as the two of you just sat there. It wasn’t often the two of you had moments like this and you were both taking advantage of it.
“I should probably go wake up Abs now.” you said, wishing this feeling would never end, but you knew it had to at some point.
“Can we have five more minutes? Please?” he asked quietly, still holding onto you like he was gonna lose you at any moment.
And you couldn’t say no those brown puppy dog eyes that looked into yours.
You rolled your eyes with a smile as you leaned over to place a very quick kiss on Mikes lips.
“Y/n! You said you weren’t gonna kiss my brother in front of me today!” Abby said as she looked over with a disgusted look on her face.
“Your brother asked for it Abs.”
“That’s even worse, ew!” she gave you an unamused glare before running ahead of the two of you to her next big activity.
You gave Mike a knowing stare as he smirked back at you while you all continued walking. The two of you always found it funny that Abby was the matchmaker that got you two together, but now she could not stand the thought of you guys doing anything romantic. Ever.
After that, the rest of your day consisted of many activities including playing the prize games, riding tons more rides, and Abby forcing Mike on every big rollercoaster she could get him on.
Once you finally arrived at your final activity, it was like watching two kids in a candy store, quite literally. Abby’s eyes lit up as she walked into the ice cream store, she turned around to face you.
“Have you ever seen this many ice cream flavors in one place?!” she tried to contain her excitement.
“I don’t think I have Abs.” you said with a small laugh.
“Me either.” Mike said as he let go of your hand to begin inspecting every single flavor.
The two siblings spent a good half an hour in the shop just trying to decide what flavor to get. It was quite amusing watching Mike get so excited over ice cream. Out of all things, ice cream is what made him that happy. After everyone finally picked out a flavor (or more) the three of you left the shop to sit and eat your sweet treat.
“Today was the best day ever!” Abby said with a mouthful of rainbow sorbet.
“I have to agree with Abby on this one.” you said while poking at the rest of your ice cream
“I already want to come back and we haven’t even left yet.” Abby squealed.
“Hold it Abs, it’s gonna be a while until we can do this again.” Mike said.
“That’s okay, I can start collecting change so we can buy the tickets quicker!”
“Look at this little girlboss you have on your hands.” you said smiling at Mike.
“Believe me, I know.” he was already so used to Abby’s big ideas.
“I wish we didn’t have to leave already.” Abby said, looking down at her cup.
“It’s okay Abs, we’ll definitely be back before summer ends. Right Mike?” you looked over at Mike with your best puppy dog eyes, giving him a taste of his own medicine. He knew what you were doing. Abby quickly caught on to your idea and followed along.
“Anything for my girls.” he said with a smile.
“I am exhausted.” you said as you all made your way home, the dim moonlight shining through the windshield of the car. The quiet noise of Abby snoring from the backseat filled up the car.
“Pretty good first date, huh?” Mike said.
“More than pretty good, it was perfect.”
“Even with Abby here?”
“Especially with Abby here.” you smiled. “I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.”
Mike looked over at you quickly, not losing his focus from the road ahead of him.
“Me too.” he softly smiled, looking at the rearview mirror to see Abby fast asleep.
“How’d I get so lucky to have you in my life?”
“I ask myself the same question every day.”
You leaned your head onto his arm, starting to feel extra sleepy from the quiet hum of the AC and Abby’s occasional snores.
“I love you.”
“I love you more.”
You slowly drifted off to sleep after hearing those four words. It was all you needed to know, the worlds best little reminder of who you were doing it all for.
Mike looked over at you once again, smiling to himself. After he thought about it some more, today really was the perfect first date. Not the most ideal with Abby there, but after all, she’s the reason the two of you met in the first place.
Mike carefully moved his hand to turn on the radio, quiet enough not to wake you or Abby, but loud enough to keep him awake. The quiet sound of the song “Yellow” by Coldplay now filled the car. Mike smiled again, remembering that this song was yours and his. A constant reminder how Y/n would do anything for Mike and Mike would do anything for Y/n. A reminder for Mike that if he never mentioned this babysitting job to the neighbor across the street, this bond would’ve never formed.
An even bigger reminder to Y/n that taking the job from the neighbor across the street was the best decision she could’ve ever made. A decision that changed her life and the lives of two siblings who just needed a little extra love.

The Neighbor Across the Street pt. 5
Mike Schmidt x Babysitter!f!Reader
part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4
wc: 3.6k
warnings: angst, little bit sad (if y’all can stick thru this ONE part 🫶), fluff sprinkled in some parts (as always, lmk if there’s anything i’ve missed)
summary: the neighbor across the street needs a babysitter, so you take the job, not knowing what’s in store for you as you grow closer to the siblings. AU where nothing bad ever happens at the pizzeria.
A/N: this is gonna be the “hard” chapter, but it’ll all be worth it for part 6, the official finale of the series 🥹 no worries tho, i still plan on expanding the story once it’s over!!!
——————————————————————————
You could barely focus in any of your classes today. Your mind was full of thoughts about one person and one person only: Mike. All of the things that happened in such a short amount of time were eating you alive. You couldn’t take any of it anymore. In a way, you wished Abby hadn’t told you about her secret. You didn’t want something as silly as a “crush” to get in the way of your goal of keeping Abby and Mike happy.
As you drove home from your classes, you didn’t know what to expect that evening. You knew he probably wanted to clear up whatever had happened the other evening. Maybe he just wanted to tell you he was sorry for not paying you again. But then why did he want you there an hour early? What on earth could he want to talk about for a whole hour with you?
You only ever had two serious conversations with him in the two months or so of knowing him, the one the first night shift of babysitting Abby and during your walk with him just a few days ago.
There was that voice, all the way at the back of your head, that was telling you something completely different. There was a voice that was saying this had to do with Abby’s secret. You attempted to quickly get it out of your head, your hands getting sweaty at the thought as you continued driving home. You hated to admit this was making you more nervous than it should’ve been.
The thought of him waiting at his door until you got home crept into your head once more. The way he saw how you looked back one last time like you’d done every time before. How often did he wait at the door like that? Did he genuinely care about you that much to wait?
When you got home you had an hour until you knew you’d have to be at Mike’s house. Of course today was one of those days where your professors just knew you were having an off day and assigned what felt like 10x more work than usual. You hesitantly took out all of your textbooks and notebooks in an attempt to knock out a few assignments before you left.
As you sat down, something hanging on the headboard of your bed caught your attention. The black hoodie Mike had lent you was there. You truly intended on giving it back to him yesterday since you’d accidentally wore it home the other night. Whether you forgot it by chance or on purpose you couldn’t even remember anymore.
It sat there like a painful reminder of not knowing what was to come later. He said it wasn’t anything bad, but maybe he just didn’t want to stress you out. What if he had to quit the night job, therefore leaving you jobless? You didn’t want to leave them hanging. You didn’t care if you were getting paid consistently or not. You just wanted to be there for them. That was all that mattered to you now.
You continued to sit there, looking at the hoodie, thoughts racing through your mind with no signs of stopping. The textbooks and notebooks all over your desk were never opened, you didn’t have the energy now at least. Not when your leg wouldn’t stop bouncing and stomach was twisted into knots. You kept telling yourself “It’s just your imagination, everything is fine. Everything will be okay.” It was already almost time for you to go, so you threw all the books back into your bag, grabbed the hoodie, and made your way over.
The feelings were mutual back at Mike’s house. Mike wasn’t sure why he felt so anxious about having to talk to you. It really wasn’t a big deal at all. He just wanted to clear up last night and, well, some other things too. He was just as scared of the unknown as you were. The kitchen smelled like pasta cooking as he tried his best to distract himself by making Abby’s dinner. Just incase the conversation went really bad and you didn’t want to stay. Not that he was anticipating that it would go badly.
He stirred the spaghetti as the water bubbled, focusing as best he could on everything but his thoughts.
“Mike why are you making dinner tonight?” Abby interrupted standing by the fridge.
“Thought I’d give Y/n a break for one night.” he said, still looking down at the pot of boiling water.
“She makes it so much better than you do though.” Abby started whining.
“Beggars can’t be choosers Abs.” he said with a sigh.
“What does that mean?” Abby said with a confused tone to her voice.
“Life’s not fair, that’s what it means. You either eat my pasta or nothing.”
He could practically hear the girl roll her eyes in response.
“Well, I’m not hungry right now.”
Now she’s just being a smart ass, Mike thought to himself.
“Good thing Y/n can warm it up for you later when I’m gone.”
“I don’t want to eat it later though. It’s gonna be gross later.” she crossed her arms now, she knew what she was doing.
“Well you’re either gonna eat it now, later, or never. This is what you’re getting for dinner.” Mike was getting more impatient with her sudden attitude.
“Your pasta is gross Mike I’m not eating it.”
“Whatever. I don’t care anymore, don’t eat it.” Way to ruin this evening Abby.
“Why do you have to be so-“
“Abby, just stop! I’m not having this today. Go to your room.” he didn’t realize how much he rose his voice at her. Arguing wasn’t uncommon for them, but he rarely, if ever, rose his voice this much at her. He looked back at her, the young girls eyes were welling with small tears. This evening already wasn’t going as planned and Y/n hadn’t even arrived yet.
“I hate you Mike!” Abby shouted before running to her room, slamming the door shut.
Mike took a deep breath, putting a hand over his face. Why did he always have to mess everything up? He should’ve never asked Y/n to come over early. If he hadn’t asked, then this situation would’ve never happened. He should’ve just let the situation go. He looked back at the pot of spaghetti, the water still bubbling, finally deciding to shut off the stove.
He looked at the landline phone hanging on the wall beside the fridge. It was almost calling his name to pick it up, dial your number, and tell you not to come by anymore. He stepped forward reaching out a hand to pick up the phone. Just before he could start dialing the numbers he heard a door slowly and quietly open.
He looked at the clock on the stove, quickly realizing what time it was. There was no escaping the situation now, for either of you. He walked out of the kitchen, now in the dining room as he watched you shut the door and set down your backpack.
“Hey.” you said in almost a whisper, your usual smile on your face to hide the nervousness that still lurked deep down.
Just like that, time felt slower than ever before for Mike. Honestly, every time he saw you it began feeling more and more like that. It wasn’t like you tried to dress to impress or anything like that. The only times you had a remotely “nice” outfit on were the first few days of babysitting and extremely occasionally after that. Even then, it was nothing more than a pair of jeans and a somewhat nicer t-shirt or sweater.
Your hair was in a low messy ponytail, loose strands of hair falling out of the scrunchie. You wore a t-shirt with your college’s name plastered across the front and extremely baggy black sweatpants. This was a look that was all too familiar to Mike. The days you wore outfits like this were days that school was beating your ass. Those were the days he’d come home and find you still finishing up work at the dinning room table far too late in the night.
The way that an outfit so simple and, for lack of better terms, lazy, could make Mike feel this way felt like a crime to him. He was convinced that any other outfit imaginable would not compare to this. There was no way to explain this, but this just felt different to him.
Maybe it was because of your determination and drive for success. It was something he didn’t see in himself. Maybe he envied that you had that in you and he didn’t. He saw how hard school was. He saw that no matter how hard it got, you were still there on time every time. He wished so much he had that level dedication in him.
That’s when his eyes turned to your hand. It was holding the black hoodie he let you borrow when you stayed for s’mores. He had honestly forgotten he even gave you it, but now he was wondering why you’d brought it back. He really didn’t mind if you’d kept it. Now thinking about it, he wanted you to keep it.
“You didn’t have to make dinner Mike, you know I’ve got it.” your voice, still quiet making sure Abby wouldn’t hear your presence, broke the thoughts in Mikes head and brought him back to reality.
“Yeah, um, about that…” he began, sighing heavily.
“We need to talk.” you immediately noticed the tension that was now forming.
“Yeah.” he pulled a chair out of the dining table for you, and you both quietly sat down.
You both sat in silence for a minute or so. You waited for him to start talking and you were going to give him as long as he needed to gather his thoughts. You focused on the salt and pepper shakers in the middle of the table.
“I’m sorry.” he finally spoke up.
“Why are you sor-“
“Let me explain before you try telling me I have nothing to be sorry about.” he interrupted, his volume significantly louder than before.
You didn’t say anything back, you were ready to let him say whatever he needed to say because clearly he needed it.
“It’s just-“ he paused again, putting his face into his hands. He took a deep breath attempting to gather his thoughts and emotions before he spoke again. He wasn’t going to let them ruin this conversation.
“I don’t deserve you, Y/n.” you finally looked up. Those incredible brown eyes met yours. They almost appeared to have tears forming in them.
“You do so much for us Y/n. You’re here on time every day, no matter how much you had going on during the day. You’re always willing to do literally anything with Abby. All of the dumb things I’ve said no to her about, you’ve said yes. You’re the mother figure she never had. She doesn’t act the same way around me as she does with you. She deserves this so much more than I do. She needs you, Y/n. I don’t deserve any of this. I can rarely pay you on time. I’m putting you in this horrendous situation where you go to class every day, then you come home for 2 hours max and babysit for the entire night. You’re working literally 2 jobs and you didn’t even want this. I accidentally threw you into it, you should’ve just not taken it. It’s not fair. And yesterday when I stormed out without explaining anything, that wasn’t fair either.”
“Mike-“
“You deserve more Y/n. You deserve the world. You have so much motivation and determination in you it’s actually insane. You’re always smiling, always trying to be kind and helpful. You put others before yourself. I just feel that someone like me, the complete opposite of you, doesn’t deserve to have you in my life. I have not even an ounce of dedication or care inside of me. You don’t deserve to have to put up with all my crap. You just don’t Y/n.” he stopped, still looking you in the eyes.
You really wanted to break down and sob. How could he think he’s worth nothing? How does he not see all the effort and care he puts into taking care of Abby? He’s trying a whole lot harder than other people who have half the worries in life that he has.
“How long have you felt this way?” you said quietly, you knew if you spoke any louder than a whisper you’d start crying.
“Since the moment you first came by to try out the job.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” small, but noticeable tears were now falling down your face. “You’ve felt this way for almost 2 months and you didn’t say a word?”
“Y/n, please don’t-“
“What do you mean ‘please don’t?’ How am I supposed to brush past this knowing you’ve felt like this for 2 months now?” You wiped the tears off of your face.
Mike was now looking down at the table, avoiding your face at all costs. He knew if he saw you that way, it would be over for him. It was never his intention to make you feel this way, he knew you would care, but he didn’t think you’d care this much.
“Mike, look at me right now.”
His eyes hesitantly met yours. Your heart was beating so fast you could hear it in your head.
“You are the most thoughtful, caring, most determined person I’ve ever met. You sacrifice so so much for Abby and you don’t even realize it. When I talk to Abby, I hear all about a big brother who pours his heart out just for her to be happy. She is so incredibly lucky to have someone who dedicates so much of his time and energy just to make her happy. You didn’t ask for this and I know you’ve been through hell and back, but you do everything for that girl. No matter how much you think she doesn’t see it, you are genuinely her whole world. I have never, ever, met someone so caring in my life. You don’t have to do any of it, yet you are so selfless that you do it.”
“Then why does she hate me? Why does she always say so much about how great you are and how much she loves your cooking more than mine? Why are we always arguing over the stupidest things?”
“That’s what siblings are for Mike.” you said with an airy laugh through your tears. “After I came over to hearing your argument I went to talk to Abby. She said how she thought you hated her, how you’re always working and never do stuff with her anymore. I told her to look at all of the amazing things you do for her, all of the toys and art supplies she is lucky enough to have. I asked her who gets her all of these things. Who works their ass off for her to have the greatest childhood ever? You do, Mike. She just doesn’t know how to put that into words or actions. We’re gonna work on that though, okay?” you reached across the table to grab his hands and held them in yours.
“You need to give yourself a whole lot more credit. All I want is for you guys to be okay.” you smiled, tears still running down your face. “I just want to help you guys in any way I can. I don’t care how much I get paid or how often I get paid, that doesn’t matter to me anymore Mike. I just want to be there for the two of you.”
After all he said, after his vulnerability showed the underlying jealousy he had for you and your kindness you did it once again. You put others before yourself. He didn’t realize you were not going to give up.
“This is exactly why I don’t deserve you.”
“Quit saying that, you deserve me just as much as Abby does.” you squeezed his hands, reassuringly smiling at him. “You’re not getting rid of me.”
All he really wanted to do in this moment was to get up and kiss you. You believed in Abby, and in him, when you didn’t have to. No one was forcing you to do any of this and to know you were taking it upon yourself from the kindness in your heart made Mike feel even crazier for you. You were one of the first people to show genuine care and love to him and Abby since their parents passed away.
“I love you Y/n.”
Those 4 words came out with no thought, no hesitation, no control. It just felt right.
You were both shocked, yet relieved to hear those words. Your next 4 words didn’t have much thought to them either
“I love you too Mike.” you said, not hesitating either. It didn’t feel forced in the slightest, it felt right for both of you. You honestly couldn’t believe what had just happened and neither could Mike. Neither of you would admit it, but you weren’t even sure what to do next.
“Well it took you guys long enough.” a small voice peeped from behind you.
You turned around to see Abby, standing with her arms crossed, a smug look on her face.
“Abby, how long have you been here?” Mike said, quickly letting go of your hand he still had in his.
“Long enough to hear you and Y/n say you love each other.” she said, smiling wide and giggling. “I am so happy you finally told Y/n you have a crush on her! Or did Y/n tell you she has a crush on you?” her eyes lit up with excitement.
“Well, I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s what happened but-“
“Oh, he definitely was the one who told me first.” you smirked after interrupting.
“But who decided to hold hands first?” he quickly responded, returning you a small smirk.
Your face began burning up as you buried your face in your hands for a moment, but you also couldn’t help but laugh. Leave it up to Abby to be little miss matchmaker. Of course she’d sneak her way in to finally see her hard work come together. Once Mike realized there was no point in hiding anything anymore, he grabbed your left hand again and held it in his. It felt almost freeing, like a weight was lifted off of him in multiple ways, to be able to hold your hand.
“Also, I’m hungry.” she chimed in quickly, with a hint of annoyance in her voice.
You and Mike both looked at each other, knowing that the pasta he attempted to cook was probably off the table now. It was also almost time for Mike to go to work now, which he really didn’t want to do anymore, but there was no other choice.
“I’ll just order you guys a pizza.” he said with a smile, a genuine smile. “Y/n doesn’t need to be cooking for you after this, and I know you won’t eat whatever I can make in 10 minutes Abs.”
Abby began jumping around with pure excitement. Probably a little too excited after just offending Mike’s cooking, but that didn’t matter anymore. As long as she was happy and you were happy, Mike was gonna be happy. He was going to start changing his attitude about everything and he wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else than you. It wasn’t going to be easy, but was gonna try his very best.
“You sure Mike? I don’t mind cooking.” you replied.
“Really Y/n?” he said, sarcastically rolling his eyes.
“Okayyy fineee.” you said holding out the endings extra long, just for dramatic effect.
“Thank you Mike!” the Abby shouted, running up to his chair to give him a hug. Mike smiled at you as the young girl clung onto him.
“Thank you.” he mouthed to you.
You gave him a soft smile in response. You looked down at the black hoodie still in your lap. You brought it in the case he wanted it back, but after the conversation you two just had, there’s a good chance he’d want you to have it. Whether that was his original intention for you to keep it or not, you decided you would keep it. A constant reminder of who you were doing this for. Taking this job, you didn’t know what you were getting yourself in to. You also didn’t know why you were so nervous for this conversation. It couldn’t have gone any better. You were ready to go through whatever hardships and challenges you had to for your two favorite neighbors.

The Scene at the Mall (pt 2) | Mike Schmidt x Reader
warning: brief mentions of a toxic relationship and harrassment, fluff
note: be sure to read pt 1 if you haven't already! :)
also! there is a hunger games reference, see if you can spot it! ;)
--------------
Your gentle laugh rings through Mike's ears, causing him to look at you with a wide smile. The two of you walk through the mall, hands intertwined, staring into each others' adoring eyes.
"I love my necklace," you say, softly touching the shiny piece of jewelry that sat on your chest.
"You picked it out," Mike laughs.
"Yeah, but you paid," you retort, giggling. The two of you continued to smile at each other. Oh, how you wished you could stay in this moment forever.
******
Ever since he potentially saved your life at the very same mall about a year ago, you made it a point to go there every time after work, since it was just right down the street from the restauraunt you waitressed at. And every single time, there he was, patrolling the place as a security guard.
He sure works a lot, you remember thinking to yourself. It wasn't until a few months after you met that you found out the reason for that was so he could take care of his little sister, Abby. "I'd do anything for her," he told you one night as he walked you out to your car after his shift was over. "Even if it means working a thousand hours a week- as long as it means a better life for her, I would do absolutely anything."
And now here you were, holding hands with this perfect guy. You two had offically been a couple for two and a half months now; and you had never been happier. Abby loved you, and you would help her and Mike at every possible chance. For once, the both of you were off work today, and Abby was at school- so the two of you decided to go to the mall after having breakfast at his house.
"Aren't you sick of that place?" you teased as you got into the passenger seat of his car.
"Yeah, but I want to buy you a necklace," he said, blushing. "I've been saving up."
"Mike!" you exclaim. "No. You know you don't have to get me-"
He reached over and softly put his index finger on your lip, cutting you off. "Shhh. I've made up my mind."
You sit back, sighing in mock defeat. "Alright, you win," you giggle.
Once the two of you got to the mall and went to the jewelry store, a beautiful, silver necklace with a heart at the end caught your eye. When you saw the price, however, you didn't want to ask- but it was too late. Mike already saw the way your eyes lit up, and he got a worker to get it out of the glass case before you could even react.
Mike looked over at you as the worker handed him the jewelry. "Don't feel bad. I promise this is what I want for you. Okay?"
You nodded, and he started to bring the necklace up to your neck. "May I?"
He went behind you, gently bringing the necklace over your shoulders and clasping it around your neck. The feel of his fingers against your skin made you shiver.
"There," he said, turning you around to look at the necklace.
"Mike Schmidt, you're better at putting on necklaces than me!" you laughedd.
"Well," he grinned. "I've had some practice with Abby. My mom has a few necklaces that she likes to wear sometimes." He looked down and started to shuffle his feet.
You put a hand on his shoulder. "Thank you," you said softly. You take his hands, lean in, and give him a soft kiss on the cheek.
Once Mike paid, the two of you walked out, hand in hand, and started to stroll down the area.
"It's definitely a lot easier to enjoy the mall when you don't have to work," Mike says.
Your gentle laugh rings through Mike's ears, causing him to look at you with a wide smile. The two of you walk through the mall, hands intertwined, staring into each others' adoring eyes.
"I love my necklace," you say, softly touching the shiny piece of jewelry that sat on your chest.
"But you picked it out," Mike laughs.
"Yeah, but you paid," you retort, giggling. The two of you continued to smile at each other. Oh, how you wished you could stay in this moment forever.
But all good things must come to an end, because at that moment, a voice from behind catches your attention, immediately sending chills down your spine.
"Well, well, y/n. Nice to see that you moved on."
You whip around, letting go of Mike's hand. The man (now in front of you) continues.
"It's been, what, two years since the breakup?" he sneers. "You won't be able to forget me, no matter how hard you try, y/n." Everything in you just wanted to run as far away from him as possible. This was Danny, your ex-boyfriend from high school. What started as a typical high school romance turned into a controlling, toxic relationship. You felt your cheeks turn red as Mike protectively inched closer to you. You could feel his body starting to tense up.
"Do you know him?" he asks, his voice low.
"'Course she does," Danny says. "We have a lot of...history. Don't we, y/n?" He looks down at you, a twisted smile spreading across his face.
"Why are you acting like such a creep?!" you burst out. "Leave us alone." You couldn't deal with this, not now, not ever. Things were so perfect with Mike, and now you were scared that, somehow, in some way, Danny would convince Mike that you weren't good enough for him.
Just like he convinced you you'd never fall in love again.
Suddenly Danny's eyes start to travel down your face, your neck, and then lands on your chest, where the necklace lays. You feel sick.
"Ah, so did Lover Boy over here buy you this?" Danny suddenly stretches out his arm and grabs hold of your necklace.
"What the-?!" Mike screams, shoving Danny away and grabbing hold of your hand. He places himself in front of you and Danny, who is smiling, as if he's amused by the whole situation.
"Don't you ever touch me again," you say, your voice trembling. Mike looks at you, concerned, and gives your hand a reassuring squeeze before he lets go. He walks toward Danny, inches away from his face.
"Get out of here," Mike says, his voice dangerously low. "And don't ever come near y/n again."
"Or what, Lover Boy?" Danny sneers again.
"Or I'll call the authorities and have you arrested for assault." Mike reaches into his pocket and pulls out an ID which says he's a mall security guard. "Unless you want me to do so right now? I do happen to know the head of security here..."
You smile. Go, Mike! you cheer in your head.
Danny's arrogant smile fades. He looks at you one more time. "It won't last," he says. "Soon you'll be running back to me."
"Get. Out." Mike growls. And finally, Danny turns and walks away.
Mike turns to you, grabbing hold of your hands. You start to talk. "I'm so, so sorry-"
"Hey, hey, hey, you don't have to apologize for anything," Mike says, gently placing his palm on your cheek and brushing a strand of hair out of your face. He pulls you into a hug, and you happily accept it, letting the warmth of his strong body spread over you.
"I guess you can see why that relationship didn't work out," you say into his shoulder with a weak laugh.
"Maybe you should stop going to malls," Mike jokes back as he pulls away from the embrace and looks at you with loving eyes. You chuckle, looking back into them.
"This will last," he says confidently, his hands on your shoulders.
"I know," you say with a soft smile. "And this will prove it."
You wrap your hands around his waist, pulling him forward, and softly press your lips against his. He kisses back with such love and gentleness that you just want to explode with emotion. He brings his hands through your hair and then pulls back, his hands now cupping your face.
"I love you," he whispers.
"I love you too, Mike."

The Scene at the Mall | Mike Schmidt x Reader | Dual POV
warning: mentions of stalking, drinking, kidnapping, harassment
note: this is when mike is still working as a security guard at the mall, so prior to the events of the movie
here is the link to pt 2!
-----------------
Are they following me?
That's the thought that was in your head as you made your way through the crowded mall. You had gotten off work an hour ago and, after a particularly busy shift at the restauraunt, you decided to go the mall and spend some money. You deserved it; you had been waitressing nonstop the whole week. It was Friday night now.
When you had left a clothes store about five minutes ago, you saw two men standing at the entrance in your peripheral vision. You heard them whisper and chuckle, and they have been following you from a distance ever since- or at least you thought so.
I'm probably just overthinking, you thought to yourself. But...I don't wanna go out to my car, just in case...
You took a quick glance over your shoulder, and yep, they were still there. They looked away as soon as you made eye contact. Your heart started to pound.
The mall was closing soon, and the area had emptied. You were alone. What to do, what to do....?!
You were getting close to the main exit, but there was no way you were going to go outside in the dark now. So you turn on your heel and do a swift u-turn, now facing the men. They'll keep walking forward, out the door, and then I'll just find another exit in this direction.
As you walked toward them, you started to go diagonally, to get as far away from the creeps as possible. One of them, however, suddenly lunges towards you, the other one close behind.
"Hey, what are you doing here all by yourself?" one of them said, now in front of you, his breath reeking of tobacco and alchohol. There was a nasty grin on his face. The other sneered and crossed his arms.
Just keep walking, just ignore them, they're drunk...
But you couldn't move, like a deer in headlights. You were so freaked out that you didn't even notice the security guard who was suddenly at your side.
******
Mike's POV
Today was a long shift. Mike had been at the mall since noon. And while he knew Abby was safe and sound at home with the babysitter, he was still anxious to get home to her.
He was making his way towards the main exit to prepare to lock the doors when he noticed a girl walking his way- quickly. He looked to the other side of the area, and two middle-aged men were eyeing her.
His heart started to pound.
When the men suddenly made their way in front of the girl, blocking her path, he was no longer at the mall. No, he was back in the forest, helplessly watching the car that took his brother away from him forever.
A voice screamed in his head. Help her!!
******
Protectively shoving you back from the men and forming a wall between you and them, the security guard spoke in a deep, intense voice. "Get out of here," he growled as he glared at the men. "Mall's closing."
The guard quickly turned over his shoulder, looking at you with worried eyes. "You okay?"
You were about to respond with a "yes" when one of the men reached for your arm before you could react. In a slurred voice, he says, "Aw, c'mon man, of course she's-"
The guard immediately turns and shoves him, hard, and the man's grip on your arm releases. You recoil, and the guard grabs both of the men by their shirts. His brown eyes are filled with fury. "I. Said. Leave."
Their alchohol-ridden minds finally take the hint, and they stumble towards the door as the guard follows closely behind. He shoves them out, quickly locking the door behind them.
He takes a deep breath, and turns to you again. You let out a sigh of relief.
"Thank you, oh my gosh, thank you." Tears fill your eyes and your body starts to tremble from the shock of what just happened. Great, now you just look like some sort of damsel in distress. "Sorry," is all you say as you wipe your eyes.
The guard looks at you with a soft smile and concerned eyes and moves in closer. You notice that he doesn't touch you at all; but even if he did, you would've allowed it. Everything about him, his voice, his presence- it just felt safe.
"You don't have to apologize," he whispers. "I'm glad I was here."
"What's your name?" you ask softly.
"Mike," he replies. The two of you sit down on a nearby cushioned bench, and the trembling starts to stop as he quietly sits by your side. You look up at him, and, to your suprise, now tears are starting to form in his eyes, too.
You wouldn't find out until years later why exactly he cried that night, or why saving you from those men was so personal to him. But that night, as Mike sat with you for a while and, when he was absolutely sure there was no danger, walked you out to your car- you knew that he was the one.

The Father-Daughter Dance
Fluffy and wholesome!Mike and Abby sibling bonding
Word Count: 1988
Summary: When Abby's bully tells her she can't go to the school dance, it's up to Mike to save the day. Risking his wallet, as well as his last nerve with the local Karen...

A few months after what happened at Freddy's, things seemed to be going back on track for Mike and Abby. Mike got another job with better hours so he could spend more time at home with his sister, she was socializing more with kids in her class, and things seemed like they were looking up.
Soft snores were heard from Mike's car as he waited outside for school to let out. The young man sat in the driver's seat with his arm draped over his eyes to block from the sun. But he didn't have to wait much longer because the back door opened suddenly and slammed shut a second later.
Mike jolted upright and immediately made a fist, a reflex when he was frightened (that trigger was subtly worse after everything they went through) but Mike instantly relaxed when he saw it was just Abby getting in the backseat. He instead ran a hand down his face to wake himself up.
"Hey, Abbs. How was your day?"
"F-fine." But her voice was wavering. She was certainly not fine.
Mike looked up from his hand and turned to look at her, seeing her eyes were red and she was sniffling. This made him tense again. Who did this. Who hurt his baby sister? Was it a bad grade on a test? That bully girl on the playground? He took a shaky breath, willing himself to be calm. His voice was soft and gentle when he asked,
"Abby, what's wrong?"
She fidgeted with a pink flier in her hand, "Th-the Father-Daughter dance at school is coming up and Emma told me I can't go because I don't have a dad..."
He knew somebody had hurt her feelings. Freaking Emma. He could tell she was going to be a little snot when he saw her at the open house. What with her perfect little blonde braid and her mom's minivan that had a bumper sticker that said, 'my child is an honor student.' Great. Just great.
Mike took another breath. After the mall incident and losing his job at Auto-Zone, Mike learned to keep calm, or at least keep from showing people how he really felt. This wasn't something he could fight his way out of.
"Abby, please don't cry. Emma doesn't know anything, ok?"
"You mean I can go to the dance anyway?" She lifted her head, her eyes lighting up with hope.
Shoot. He hadn't thought that far ahead yet. If he had to plan something, he would have suggested getting pizza and letting her pick a movie to rent to cheer her up. Now he realized that was stupid. Of course she wanted to go to the dance like everyone else.
Well, even if their dad wasn't around, Mike could take her. But the only problem was he wasn't much of a dancer. Maybe every once in a while, he'd goof off while cooking or at the grocery store, but that was just when he was trying to make Abby laugh and when no one was looking. He hadn't really danced in front of other people since the Prom. But if it would make her happy...
"Uh, if you..uh...you want to go then I can take you." Mike cleared his throat that was suddenly dry, "Sure we can go."
A squeal suddenly rang in his ears as Abby jumped up and threw her arms around him, climbing around his seat so she could give him a great, big hug. Every tear she had shed before seemed to have evaporated in a second, "Thank you, Mike! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!"
He chuckled and patted her arm, "It's no problem. I want you to have fun. But sit back in your seat, okay? I'm gonna start heading out of here."
She giggled and hopped back before putting on her seatbelt, "This is going to be great! Can we stop by the store before we go home for a dress?"
"What's wrong with your purple dress? You know, with the polka dots?" Mike asked, remembering the last time they went shopping. That was for an Easter dress, but did they get that this year or last...?
"That dress is not cool for a dance, Mike. And we got to match. Your tie needs to match my dress."
"I need a tie now too?"
"Yeah! And matching bouquet and croissant." Abby gave him a toothy grin through the rear-view mirror.
Mike tried to stifle a laugh, "I think you mean boutonniere and corsage."
"Yeah, that!"
If she wasn't so giddy, Mike would be sweating over how much this was going to cost. But he didn't have a choice. This clearly meant a lot to her and if this is what she needed then heck with it, he was going to make sure she had the best night of her life. He was going to make that little bully Emma eat her words.
• • •
"Owww, Mike!" Abby complained as her brother tried to fix her hair for the dance, "You're hurting me!"
"Don't blame me. Your head is a rat's nest." He squinted through the dark mess, armed only with a Cinderella brush.
"No, it's not!"
"I'm sorry. A curly rat's nest."
"No, it's nooot!!" Abby protested again but she was giggling all the while. She had been excited like this all day, reassuring Mike he had made the right decision by taking her. Even if the recliner in the living room had been calling his name...
When her hair was finally tamed then Mike slid a headband over as the finishing touch, "Alright, all done. What do you think?"
She hurried over to the mirror to see how she looked and instantly smiled at the results. She had chosen a pink dress with sequins on the top, lots of tulle for a tutu-like skirt, and a ribbon at the waist with a fake flower on the side that matched her headband. "I love it!"
Mike walked up behind her, smiling softly as he admired both their reflections. He hadn't been able to talk her out of the pink dress so he wore a black button-up, slacks, and a matching pink tie. It wasn't his color, but this night was of course not meant for him, "You look beautiful, Abbs. You're going to be the prettiest one there."
"You really think so??"
Prettier than Emma, Mike thought to himself before pinning the boutonniere onto his shirt. Once that was on then he knelt down and held out the corsage, "Just one last thing..."
Abby held out her dainty little wrist so he could slide on the corsage, also showing off her glittery nails that Mike had helped her with earlier. Man, it had taken a lot of work to get them ready for this dance. Who knew it took this much work? He felt sick to his stomach thinking about a few years down the road when she wanted to start wearing makeup...
"There. All ready for the dance. How we feeling?"
Mike nearly fell over when she tackled him in another great-big Abby hug, "You're the best big brother ever. I wish dad were here but...I'm really glad you're taking me."
Okay, that one got him. He hardly knew what to say. He quickly blinked his watery eyes as he wrapped his arms around her, "Abby, you know I'd do anything for you. I'm happy to take you. Come on, let's get going."
"Hehe, okay!" She eagerly grabbed his hand and pulled him to the door.
• • •
Mike stepped into the gymnasium with an expression like a deer in headlights. It was all set up for the dance with streamers, a disco ball, a DJ, and a snack table. It was mostly dark with flashing multi-colored lights while The Sign by Ace of Base played blaringly over the speakers. Yep. This brought back memories. Welp, at least he always had the snack table.
He looked down to Abby, "Hey Abbs, you want some--?"
But she didn't hear him over the music, "Hey, Ashley!" She dashed off to chat with her friend.
Mike chuckled and let her go have her fun while he went to get some food. But to his horror, Emma's mom was manning the table, helping serve snacks and drinks. He took a deep breath and forced his expression to remain neutral. No one but him had to know how much he hated her.
"Oh, hi, Mike!" Her nasal voice rang out.
"Lisa." He kept his head down and grabbed a plate for a couple cookies. These had better be chocolate-chip and not oatmeal raisin. Stop acting like it's so much healthier, Lisa, they're freaking cookies.
"I'm surprised to see you guys here! Are you allowed to? You know, since, this is meant for fathers and daughters and all." Mike could see where Emma got all that charm from.
1, 2, 3...1, 2, 3...1, 2, 3...just breathe and relax. Breathe and relax.
"Yep," Was all he replied, taking a sip of punch.
"My David is out there with our sweet little Emma. Isn't she just a peach?" Lisa pointed to a man and little girl out on the dance floor, both doing the cabbage patch. Like complete dorks.
"The peachiest." He took a bite of his cookie then instantly regretted it. Oatmeal raisin. Dang it, Lisa.
Thankfully, Abby ran up to him to save him from anymore small talk, "MikeMikeMike! They're playing my favorite song! Can we go dance??"
"Uh, sure." Mike let her drag him to the dance floor, not far from Emma and her dad. He left his plate of disappointment behind at the snack table.
"Have fun!" Lisa waved them off.
"Have fun," Mike mocked under his breath.
When they were in the center of the gym, Abby pumped up her fists one at a time and bounced up and down. Her little curls flying all around her head. She was so cute, he was gonna die.
"Mike! You're supposed to dance with me!"
"Uh..." Mike kind of copied what she was doing, but looked around for ideas. He was not going to do the cabbage patch, that was for sure. Gosh, he hadn't been to anything like this in years.
Next Abby made a peace sign and waved it over her eyes until Mike mirrored her, the music pulsing under their feet. He could still hear her laughter and he really hoped it wasn't because he looked stupid. He just had to pretend he was in his kitchen and people weren't looking. But honestly, who cares if they were? He couldn't be as bad as David, so why couldn't he blow off a little steam?
Mike finally relaxed. He grabbed Abby's hands and swung their arms back and forth. Now this wasn't so hard. Hey, he was having a little fun too. This night wasn't just about her (though it was 95% about her) but this was about them being together and it was honestly better than he thought it was going to be.
When the song started to end, Mike finished it off by spinning her around and the two shared matching grins. They were going to treasure this moment forever. Despite everything that had happened in the past, at least they had each other. Brother and sister against the world.
"Mike!" Abby bounced up on her toes.
"Yeah?"
"After this, could we rent a movie and order a pizza?"
He laughed. Now there was an idea. "Absolutely. And while we're out, maybe a box of cookies. Chocolate-chip."

----------------
You got to Mike's house an hour earlier, just like he asked. When he opened the door, you noticed that his hair was damp and his face was clean-shaven. He also had a shirt on that you had never seen him wear before. it was a short sleeve black t-shirt, and it looked nice on him, considering he only seemed to wear sweatshirts. Ok, "nice" was an understatement. Mike looked VERY attractive, and the muscles bulging out from the tight sleeves was enough to make you blush.
"Hey," he said nervously as you walked in.
"Hi!" you responded as you set your things down, and then looked back up at him, expectantly.
"Did you, uh, finish all your classes alright?" he asked, scratching the back of his head. It confused you, but then you remembered that earlier in the morning, in Abby's fort, you mentioned that you had some classes that day.
"Oh! Uh, yeah! Thanks for asking," you replied. The silence was tense, but in a good way. You knew he liked you; but did he know you liked him?
"So, what did you want to talk to me about?" you ask as the two of you make your way to the kitchen table. As you take a seat, he moves a chair directly next to you, and nervously clears his throat as he sits down. Your heart pounds.
"I just wanted to say that....I am so, so grateful for you." he pauses, looks at you with those deep brown eyes, and smiles. "I'm sorry for the way i was last night. I was just stressed with Abby and...and...y'know." He looks away, tears in his eyes, and continues.
"Anyways, I, uh, saw you in Abby's fort this morning and it just...it made me really happy. Thank you for being there for her, and for being the..." he hesitates, as if deciding what to say next. His next words are quiet and hoarse. "...for being the guardian that I can't be."
It felt like a punch to the gut.
He didnt feel good enough. He didnt feel like a good brother, a good son, a good parental figure for his sister.
You suddenly felt compelled to make him see that this wasnt true.
"Mike," you say intensely, gently touching his hand. He looks up at you with his eyebrows raised. "You... are doing EVERYTHING that you can for Abby, and you are doing amazing. She loves you so much, and she knows how hard youre trying."
You pause, trying to decide if you should say the next words on your mind.
You plunge ahead.
"And I know how hard you're trying, too. And it just makes me love you all the more." You lean forward, planting a kiss on his cheek. As you pull back, he looks at you, stunned, his cheeks flushed. Then, a grin. He smiles so wide that youre not even sure youre looking at Mike Schmidt anymore. He doesn't kiss you back- not yet, at least- but that look in his eyes, the look that he finally believes he IS doing enough, that HE is enough, is worth even more. ✨

Mike Schmidt x Babysitter!f!Reader

surprise! part 4 is here early for 100 followers, so in turn there may be a few more errors than usual 🥹🫶 appreciate all of you so much, and very happy reading!
——————————————————————————
Monday came faster than you’d expected as you walked over to Abby and Mike’s house, preparing yourself for another night shift of babysitting. You were surprised Abby was able to make it a day without seeing you or finding a way to somehow be in your vicinity. She’d become quite clingy, in the best way possible. More often than not, she just wanted you to be there with her, even if that meant finishing up assignments while she drew.
You opened the door to hear the sound of muffled arguing between the siblings. As you placed your backpack down by the dining table, you caught the slightest glimpse of Mike walking down the hall to Abby’s room. Abby was strung across his shoulder, the young girl pulling on his shirt as she wore Mike’s security vest.
“Mike! Let me come with you! Please!” Abby whined as she tried to latch onto the door frame. Before you could attempt to see what was happening, the door slammed shut and Mike walked out with his vest in hand.
“Everything okay?” you asked, trying to read the situation. He stopped for a moment, not knowing how long you’d been there and how much of the situation you saw or heard.
“Everything’s fine. She’s all yours.” he huffed as he walked past you.
“You sure?”
“Don’t worry about it, Y/n.” he was grabbing his bag and keys, still visibly upset about whatever had happened. “See you tonight.”
The door shut quickly as he left the house, not giving you a chance to say anything else back. You stood for a moment, still confused about what you had just walked into, until the sounds of muffled crying broke the silence. You quietly made your way to Abby’s room. As you got closer, the sounds grew louder. You gently knocked on the door.
“Hey Abs. It’s Y/n/n. Can I come in please?” you said in a gentle voice.
You heard the patter of small footsteps as she made her way to the door. It slowly opened and Abby scurried back to blanket fort in the corner of the room. The room was full of drawings tapped over ever surface, including many the two of you had done together over the past 2 months. It had everything a girl Abby’s age could ever want, down to the smallest details.
“You okay Abs?” you stepped in slowly, giving her space.
“Mike hates me Y/n.” she said.
“Why do you think Mike hates you?”
“He’s always at work. He never wants to draw with me anymore. He is never at home anymore Y/n.” she started sniffling again.
You grabbed a golden teddy bear from her bed, looking down at it as you approached the blanket fort. It had a bow and top hat, you instantly knew where it was from and who got it for Abby.
“Mike would never hate you Abs. You know how much you love Mike? He loves you a million more times than that.” you could see her shuffling in the fort, turning away from the opening. You sat down in front of the opening to get down to her level.
“If he loved me he would let me come to work with him.” she mumbled.
“I know you love your brother Abby, but he is just really busy right now. That doesn’t mean he hates you or he doesn’t want to play with you anymore. He just has a lot of work to do right now.” you set down the golden teddy bear in the entrance of the fort and lightly tapped Abby’s shoulder. “I think Fredbear wants a hug.”
She slowly turned around and looked down at the bear that sat in front of her. She looked down at the bear, then up at you who sat crisscross on the floor smiling softly at her.
“Who got you this bear Abs?”
“Mike.” she said as quiet as a mouse.
“And what about everything else in your room?”
“Mike.” she said quietly again.
“He cares about you so much more than you think Abs. He works a lot so he can get you all of these awesome toys and art supplies. He loves you more than anything in the world.” you were patting the top of the hat on the bear.
Abby grabbed the bear swiftly and held it in her arms. After a moment she snuck her way out of the fort and practically jumped on you, giving you a hug now too.
“Promise me you’ll give your brother a hug just like this when he’s home again?” you said as the young girl wouldn’t let go of you.
“I promise Y/n.” you could tell she was smiling in the way her voice sounded. “I love you, Y/n.”
She had never said that to you before. After just under two months of babysitting, after building such a strong bond with the girl in such little time, it came both as a shock and comfort. You could feel tears start welling in your eyes, smiling bigger than ever before. You knew how hard it was for the girl to trust people and build relationships with people her age. You were pleasantly surprised at how quickly she warmed up to you after Mike warned you it might take a while. You didn’t want Abby to ever feel this way again, you wanted to make sure she knew she was loved and cared for. Just like she loves and cares for Mike, and now you.
“I love you too Abs.” you responded, trying your best to hold it together. She finally pulled away from you, still holding the bear in her hands.
“Can we play now?” she said, already gathering a pile of plush animals and dolls from her blanket fort. You could not help but chuckle at this, it was right on character for her to be back to her happy and energetic self.
“Of course Abs.” you said with a smile.
“Here is your food Mr. Panda.” Abby said giggling, handing over a paper plate stolen from the kitchen with pieces of paper colored to be pieces of food on top of it.
“Thank you Mr. Chef, this is quite the delicious meal.” you said, attempting to sound like a posh British business man, making Abby laugh even more. “Wait, why is there a toad in my meal?!”
“I pranked you!” she shouted laughing even harder.
“Ew! I am leaving this establishment!” you said, keeping up your accent, throwing the plate back at her as you took your panda bear, pretending to make it walk away.
“Let’s do it again!” this was probably the 100th time she’d said this. While it was the best feeling seeing her laugh and have fun, the same pranks over and over again get boring after about 5 times.
“I don’t know Abs, it’s getting kind of late.” it was almost 10pm and you knew she was technically supposed to be asleep by 9:30 per Mike’s rules.
“Please Y/n!” you thought for a moment before speaking.
“How about this, you go get ready for bed and we can hang out in your little fort until you get sleepy.”
“Like a sleepover?” she said, almost jumping from joy.
“Just like a sleepover.” you said smiling.
“Okay!” she ran to grab her pajamas and brush her teeth. Once she returned she pulled your arm right into the fort. She pulled a blanket over her legs as she sat down and gave you the spare one that was left.
“Let’s tell each other our biggest secrets.” Abby said immediately after you sat down, a mischievous grin on her face. Wow, this girl really doesn’t take a break. “You go first Y/n.”
“Wow, thanks Abby.” you said hesitantly, not knowing what kind of information the girl was trying to get out of you. “Hmm… okay. My biggest secret is I actually really hate cake.”
“Y/n, that’s a lame secret. And I know you’re lying.” she said, extremely unamused.
“How do you know I’m lying!” you said, pretending to be annoyed, softly smiling at her. “Okay fine then, what’s your biggest secret?”
“Mike has a crush on you.”
“What?” you said, your smiling dropping, jaw hanging open.
“Yeah, he has a hugeee crush on you Y/n.”
“Th- that’s really funny Abs.” you nervously laughed, trying to save yourself from the extremely shocked and obvious reaction you had at first.
“I’m not lying Y/n.” she was dead serious.
You sat there for a moment, still nervously laughing until you realized she was being so serious. You could feel your face starting to burn up out of both embarrassment and shock of the confession she had just made. Memories of her saying you’d be a great princess for Mike flashed into your mind. She definitely told him about the situation the next day, and somehow, like she always does, got the information out of him. You weren’t sure what to do next until she made the decision for you.
“Do you have a crush on Mike?” she was clearly picking up on your reaction.
“Um, well, I mean-“
“Just say it Y/n.”
“Okay fine, maybe I do have a crush on Mike.”
“I knew it! Are you going to get married to Mike?”
“Abs slow down!” you said covering your face with your hands.
“I am so happy you have a crush on Mike!”
“You aren’t at all grossed out by this? Shouldn’t you be saying something about us having cooties?” you knew at her age you did not feel this way about crushes, she was way too excited about this.
“No, I think you guys would be perfect for each other.” she was smiling and giggling to herself.
“Well,” there’s no point holding any of this in anymore, she already knows too much. “Maybe I feel the same way about it.”
“I know. I can’t wait for you to be boyfriend and girlfriend.”
“Abs, you know you can’t tell Mike about this, right? This is my biggest secret.” you said, now realizing you had to warn the girl based off her inability to keep other people’s secrets.
“You said hating cake was your secret.”
“Abby.” you laughed and playfully pushed her shoulder.
“Okay I promise I won’t tell Mike if you promise to tell him you have a crush on him.” she began grinning mischievously again.
“Abby you are something else.” you were laughing and shaking your head. “I think it’s time for you to go to bed now.”
“Fine.” she groaned, “Only because you told me about your crush on Mike.”
You attempted to get up, but she stopped you.
“Can we sleep in here?” you noticed she didn’t say I but she said we.
“You know what, why not.” you smiled.
You stepped out to shut off the lights, noticing the fort had a glow to it from christmas lights strung all around it. You grabbed a pillow from Abby’s bed for her to use and went back to the fort. She already had her posse of stuffed animals gathered around her, pulling her blanket up until only her head was poking out of it. You pulled the extra blanket and laid next to her. The fort was small for someone your age to be laying down in, but you made do for her.
“I never want you to leave our house again Y/n.” Abby said softly as she laid her head on your shoulder. “I wish we could have a sleepover every night.”
“I do too, Abs.” you said as you looked up to the shapes on the blankets above your head. You didn’t realize she quickly fell asleep after her last comment, and you fell asleep quickly after. You were content hoping you made an impact on her tonight and also content knowing there was a chance Mike felt the same way you did. There was a chance you could be there for Abby forever, the chance that one day you’d never have to leave them again in the morning.
The front door opened quietly in the early hours of the morning as Mike returned home from another grueling night shift. This shift was especially difficult. It was a long night, he didn’t get as much sleep as he wanted to, and the dread of coming home to confront both Y/n and Abby over the earlier situation was in his mind constantly. He didn’t want to mess up for either of them and it sure felt like he had. He didn’t want to disappoint his girls.
“Hey Y/n.” he said quietly as he set down his things, rubbing his eyes tiredly. When he didn’t hear a response back he expected you to be asleep, but when he went to look for you in your usual spot on the couch, you weren’t there. He panicked for a moment, flashbacks of Garrett going missing played in his mind. He quickly made his way to Abby’s room, trying his best not to let the floorboards creek on his way there. When he opened the door and caught a glimpse of the two of you fast asleep in the blanket fort, he felt relief wash over him.
He stepped into the room quietly, not wanting to wake up either of you. When he approached the opening of the fort, he saw the way Abby’s head leaned on your shoulder, and the way yours leaned against her head. The smallest of smiles formed on his face.
He felt forever indebted to you for giving Abby the childhood memories she deserved. He knew Abby loved him, but he never felt like he was able to do enough. He was never able to be anything more than a brother to Abby. You knew which activities she liked, how to play with her, and exactly how she liked her spaghetti cooked. He knew deep down inside that Abby deserved you in her life, but he didn’t feel like he deserved you at all. You didn’t deserve to be pulled into a situation like this, yet you gave it your all. He paid you only when he could, and you never complained. Not once. No matter how stressful school was, you never called off. You pushed through for Abby. But Mike didn’t realize you pushed through it for him as well.
He poked his head through the entrance of the fort just enough to place a light kiss on Abby’s forehead. Before he could stop himself, he leaned over Abby and placed the lightest, most gentle kiss on the top of your head. He slowly took his head out of the fort, and sat for a minute on the floor.
“I’m sorry.” he whispered so quietly. Only the sound of the girls quiet breaths filled the room, then he got up quietly, and went to bed. He didn’t get anymore sleep that night.
7am came slower than ever as Mike sat in his bed. He had nothing to look at above him as he removed his “Nebraska” poster a few days after starting the new night job, bringing it to work instead. He brought it there to distract him instead. He got out of bed, and went over to Abby’s room to find the two of you still asleep. He felt bad having to wake you guys up, but he had to do it.
“Hey Abs, it’s time to get ready for school.” he gently shook her shoulder. “Come on, get up.”
She slowly woke up, groaning, asking for 5 more minutes. She got up, immediately giving Mike a biggest hug. She wasn’t going to forget her promise she made the night before. Mike was surprised by the gesture after yesterdays altercation, but he didn’t think much of it.
From all the stirring, you also slowly woke up, not entirely remembering what happened last night and how you ended up in Abby’s fort. When you finally fully woke up, the memories came flooding back. “Mike has a crush on you.” Suddenly it felt awkward for you.
“Morning Y/n.” he said as he held part of the opening open for Abby to get out and start getting ready.
“Sorry for staying longer than usual.” you rubbed your face trying to wake yourself up and hide the redness in your face.
“Y/n. You have absolutely nothing to be sorry about.” he quickly looked over his shoulder towards the door, listening for any indication Abby was nearby. “Listen, Y/n, do you think you can come over an hour early tonight?” he said in a whisper.
“Yeah, what’s up?” you said, a confused look on your face.
“I don’t want Abby to know. Just wanted to talk to you for a bit.” he was avoiding your eyes, still holding the blanket open from the fort. “Nothing bad. I just don’t want Abby knowing you’ll be here early, kind of hard to talk to anyone when she’s around.”
“Yeah, yeah I can do that.” you said, getting out of the fort, now standing in front of him.
“I’ll distract her before you get here.”
“Okay, sounds good.” you said with a tight lipped smile.
“Thanks, Y/n.”
“Anytime.”
You both stood there for another second, making eye contact again, until you looked away quickly.
“I’m gonna go now, have a few classes today.”
“Right. Sorry for keeping you long.”
“You told me not to apologize, now it’s my turn to tell you not to.” you said with an airy chuckle.
“See you later Y/n.”
You made your way towards Abby’s door to leave, bumping into her on the way out. She gave you an extremely knowing glare after noticing you had been talking to Mike, alone, in her room just moments before.
“See you guys tonight.” you waved, exiting the room. Mike followed you out. When you reached the front door, he opened it for you, and waited there as you left. He waited there, like he always does, making sure you cross the street safely. This time he waited until you opened the door to your own house, and for the first time, you both noticed the other.
Had he not stayed until you opened your own door, he wouldn’t have known you turn around every time you go home, hoping you’d see him one last time. Had he not stayed, you wouldn’t have known how he waits every single time, no matter how tired he is, just to make sure you get home safely. And so he doesn’t have to keep you out of his sight for any longer than he has to.
