A friend of mine on FB wrote this and, with their permission, told me that I could share it. I got more than a bit choked up reading it. Enjoy.
I’m 6 years old, and I’m Luke Skywalker, blowing up the Death Star in his X-Wing and using the Force… until I go outside to play Star Wars with the neighborhood kids, and I’m told I can’t be Luke because I’m a girl. I have to be Leia instead. Nothing wrong with Leia, but she’s the girl. She’s my only option, otherwise, I’m not allowed to play.
I’m 7 years old, and I’m She-Ra, with a pegasus and sword and… and no one wants to play She-Ra, because He-Man is better, stupid girl, duh. No boy wants to play a girl character. Duh. Stupid girl.
I’m 8 years old, and I’m Liono, with the Sword of Omens, telling me the future and defeating my enemies… until I can’t, because I’m a girl. I have to be Cheetara, even though I don’t like to run around really fast. She’s the girl. She’s my only option.
I’m 10 years old, and I’m a Ninja Turtle. I have these cool weapons and know martial arts… until I can’t be, because I’m a girl. I have to be April. She doesn’t get to do much, but she’s the girl. She’s my only option. If the other girl wants to play, she gets to be April, and I’m out, because she’s prettier.
I’m 14 years old, and my father yells at me again to stop being such a girl. Stop being weak. Stop being stupid. Stop being you.
I’m 17 years old, and set foot in a comic shop for the first time, only to be told girls don’t read comics. I must just be trying to impress my boyfriend. I don’t even get to ask if they had that book I read part of, with the beautiful woman who was Death, who saved a teenage boy.
I’m 24, and I’m Jean Grey, the powerful Phoenix, but turned into some weird Scarlet Witch hybrid who must die at the hands of Wolverine, because Logan just needed a little more angst.
I’m 28 and I’m Commander Shepard at the helm of the Normandy, but just having the OPTION of a female player character sends hordes of men into a blind rage, intent on stamping out any joy I might derive from this. I have to mute tons of keywords online and play in friends-only groups if I want to avoid being called a cunt for the sin of logging into multiplayer with a female avatar.
I’m 32 and I get a job running a comic shop. I tell my boss I’d like to have ladies nights. He asks, “But when is men’s night?”
I’m 33 and I’m Rey, facing down Kylo and digging deep to survive, despite being terrified. I’ve been fighting my whole life, though, and I manage to get out of it alive. I spend the next 6 months listening to every other guy who comes into my shop informing me that she’s a Mary Sue and how stupid it was to crowbar her in just for the sake of appeasing the females and pandering to feminazis.
I’m 34 and I get to be a Ghostbuster! My heart sings as I dual-wield proton guns, but when the battle’s over, I have to listen to all these guys trash it and talk about how women just aren’t funny and should stop trying.
I’m 34, and I am NOT MCU Black Widow, who categorizes herself as a monster because she can’t have children, who laughs as her male coworkers make rape jokes at the office party. I am NOT MCU Scarlet Witch, who is a problem for the men to deal with, who has to stay home and cook dinner while they take care of business, because she’s just too emotional.
Today, I’m 35, and I’m Diana of Themyscira, striding across a battlefield as everyone follows her lead. I’ve been waiting for this battle my whole life. Going into the movie, I had yet to see a single bad review, from anyone, regardless of gender. I had heard no one saying the movie was pointless or stupid or just another instance of women ruining everything. There is this tall, powerful, beautiful female hero, and no one is acting like it’s their job to tear her down. I look at the trending topics today, and everyone still loves it. The naysayers are a fringe minority. There is valid criticism, as the movie isn’t perfect. It has some problems, but overall, it’s GOOD. Finally. This is what it feels like. So yeah, I cried. I cried a lot. I’ll probably mist up a lot more times when I watch it. Everyone should get to feel like that.

Truly uplifting to know there are capybaras in a little hot spring in Japan listening to Patsy Cline.

It took last 5 presidents years before half of Americans disapproved of them. It took Trump 8 days
For many of us, a job review comes up once or twice a year. When you’re the president of the United States, it happens every day. And it looks like Donald Trump needs to improve his job performance stat.
According to the latest Gallup poll, after only eight days on the job, Trump’s disapproval rating reached 51%. That same day, protests erupted across U.S. airports following Trump’s executive order effectively banning Muslim refugees.

Every time I read that post about doing things out of spite I remember that C. S. Lewis put that fucking street lamp in Narnia because Tolkien once said that no good fantasy story would have an eletric street lamp in it.

Did Mark ever talk about the process of writing? I know he prefers working in the morning and that research is key, but has he ever spoken about the software he uses, how he starts and structures his stories, the way he builds characters or anything like that?
Hello! An interesting question. I can point to a few times he’s talked about writing, people have asked him in Q&As or there have been videos/bts where they show him in the process of writing something, but I don’t know if he’s gone into that level of detail in general interviews etc. I didn’t attend the writer’s masterclass event he did before Christmas, since it seemed to be aimed at students/people trying to get into the industry - that might be the sort of thing you’re looking for.
First off don’t know about software, but he’s a classic two-finger typist on a laptop (she says, identically tapping away in an inefficient manner):
(gif via sherlockundercover)
From what I’ve read he generally writes in his ‘garret’ as he calls it (room at the top of the house), unless it’s for Sherlock and Sue has banished him somewhere or he’s on holiday/away filming and still working anyway because workaholic. He’s said the bonus of being an actor and a writer is that when you’re stuck in a trailer waiting to be called for a scene, you can still get stuff done.
In terms of how he develops a story - bit sketchier there. Whenever he’s asked how he comes up with ideas, he says he thinks best in the bath! And he’s talked about going for a run if he’s stuck on something. As I recall he’s said writing scripts either comes very easily and it all just pours out, or it’s painfully slow and tortuous. Classic Mark quote: “I put arse to chair, pen to paper. And then I stare at a blank sheet until my forehead bleeds.” He doesn’t generally think writing is fun. But he’s always very positive about how anyone who wants to be a writer should just write - start, write anything, if you have a pen you can do it; “The key is to just write, carry on and see what happens.”
In terms of video and articles with more info I’d say his video diary from writing The Unquiet Dead is very interesting as you can see him changing aspects of the plot and characters as time moves on. And there are videos from the League of Gentlemen days where you see him writing with Jeremy Dyson, and sat together as a four talking the series through; so they’re going through jokes and generally rambling on about all sorts. You can download those here if you haven’t seen them. He did an interview with Great Gay Reads about writing the Lucifer Box books, that’s a good one too. And this video here is a nice chat about the second Lucifer Box book; how he developed the character and the challenges of the different genre. He’s talked a bit recently about writing with Steven on Sherlock, since they did TAB and TFP together - I get the impression he quite likes working with a writing partner, since that’s how he started in the League days. There’s a bit about that in the s.4 bts videos.
And he’s said if you can write a pornographic novel you can do anything since it’s so difficult.

Love for Sherlock
So since tfp there has been a lot of hate going towards the cast and crew. I think we should put together things showing or saying how much we love the show and somehow send it to them because since the episode aired most of the fandom has been appalling. Contributions from all ships will be accepted unless there is hate included in the contribution.
I’m not quite sure how to get it to them, might need some help there, but I’m happy to put it all together if there are enough contributions. For contributions, just replying to this post is fine as is inboxing me or pretty much any way you want to send it in.
I’m gonna tag a few people who might be interested, all good if you aren’t, to get the word out a bit and hopefully we an put something positive together for the people who have worked so hard to give us a frankly incredible show.
NO HATE WILL BE ACCEPTED

The Final Problem
Okay so let’s just get it out of the way. Many people are extremely pissed at the queerbaiting. Yes, it’s really not cool. Yes, we were predicting a kiss, but lets REALLY think about this for a second. The way the show is written, and the way the original cannon is written, John and Sherlock wouldn’t have had this big glorious moment of finally realising they loved each other. It would have happened suddenly, but quietly. Sherlock wouldn’t have gone into his mind palace, John wouldn’t have started rambling. It would just be a moment that it finally clicked “I am in love with this person”. It’s VERY obvious that they both have been mulling it over for a while. If the big reveal was in the final problem, I believe this is where it was. For John, the moment it finally clicked was when he saw how distraught Sherlock was after he forced Molly to admit she loved him, afterwards destroying her coffin. John saw that Sherlock was letting himself feel instead of being the cold deducing machine he tries so hard to be. But at that particular moment, they needed to be soldiers so save the little girl who was trapped in her own head. For Sherlock, it was when John was willing to die and save Sherlock the pain of losing yet another family member. What John didn’t know however, was that losing Mycroft would break him, but losing John would drive him insane. Sherlock realised that John was more interested in his wellbeing and his family, than his own life. They saw the changes in each other. They moved around 221B more in sync, because they knew what they were both missing. Sherlock and John’s “big moment” didn’t happen because they didn’t need it to. Sherlock knew there was something different about John, and he knew exactly what it was. John knew without a shadow of a doubt that Sherlock had changed for the better, and John knew he needed to be a part of Sherlock’s continual growth. So what was “THE moment”? It was when they got back to Baker street and John stayed. Of course Mary left a video, because she knew that she would die an assassin’s death, and that she needed to make it worth something. “The Final Problem” would be Sherlock and John finally seeing what had been there all along. For more emphasis, Mofftiss wrote in the restructuring of 221B Baker Street and all it’s inhabitants. Sherlock and John are recovering from the trauma Eurus caused. The walls of the friendship of been obliterated, and they are building their new lives on the foundation of their friendship. Think about it, all Sherlock’s problem’s are solved. He has John Watson to keep him right; a new, more stable relationship; a cheeky housekeeper to check up on the both of them periodically; a child (because as we’ve been shown, Sherlock is great with kids); his brother is back in control; and his main antagonist, Jim Moriarty has finally been defeated. Yes, we didn’t see them kiss, but if you take into consideration all the details, we saw much more. We saw a strong, functional relationship between the two greatest friends. Through Mycroft, Sherlock, Mr. and Mrs. Holmes, Molly, John, Mary, Rosamund, Moriarty, and even Lestrade we saw different types of love and how it will always find a way. There is a queer reading and a heteronormative reading, but either way, it is one of the greatest stories about love that has ever been told.

My favourite thing about The Lying Detective is that basically every person watching thought Moriarty was dressed up as a woman for a few minutes
