I was on my way to a workshop (a story back when I was in Singapore). It was a Saturday at 9 AM when I was picked up from my location. I booked a Grab ride that day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The driver was a man in his 60s and he has a surprising story to share, and we can all learn from him. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All too often, we give ourselves too much choice: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ➡️ to sleep in ➡️ to stay up late ➡️ to binge-watch Netflix ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We pack so many things into a day, yet they are often completely unproductive. But when it comes to things that matter, we give ourselves so many excuses! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 😩I'm too tired 🗂 I'm too busy 🕔 I don't have enough time in a day 🚸I have children and they're a handful ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ugh, just typing those made me sick to my stomach already. I know, I know...you may be dealing with so many things. But so is everyone else! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you really want to make a difference: 👍 improve your skills 💲 turn your hobby into a business 🗃 get more clients ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ YOU HAVE TO COMMIT. SHOW UP! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Your skills will not get better if you watch a thousand tutorials online without putting it to action. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Clients will not come to you if your gallery or portfolio doesn't show consistent work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Consistency is key. Show up and do the work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, here's the kicker --> it doesn't magically happen overnight! Bummer, right? But my friend, you have to show up even if no one is following you, liking your posts or commenting on them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Don't focus on the numbers just yet. Instead, focus on getting better and people will be drawn to your work even if you don't promote yourself! Content is everywhere! You don't have to think too much about where to find them. Even the mundane can be turned into something valuable. Make it yours! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How? Let's dig deeper into that by getting into some examples I personally used - ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Saw a tree bark while walking to the park --> went home and lettered a wood-inspired E for my compilation ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. I admire @laurenastondesigns giant chunky knits ---> so I lettered a yarn inspired letter E! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Walked by the pool and almost tripped because of rocks ---> created some rock-inspired E ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why E? No specific reason other than it was the letter compilation I was working on at the time. I was feeling stuck and can't move forward so I stopped and waited for more ideas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you keep overthinking, you'll eventually get exhausted. Sometimes, it's better to just stop and pause and do something else. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You'll be amazed by the new ideas you'll come up with when you take time to have breaks too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Look at other things to do. Pay attention to your surroundings. Took me a while to finally understand how to create content using inspiration from my daily life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It doesn't happen fast but if you start noticing things, make sure to take notes. An unwritten idea is a forgotten idea. So write them down. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Finally, relate them to whatever it is you're working on. Sometimes it might work and sometimes it won't but when you practice doing it, it becomes easier and in time, it's going to be a natural thing for you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hope this helps! Celebrating World Kindness Day a day late — ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Doesn’t matter though because kindness is a gift that we can share with anyone all year round. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But before you share kindness, be kind to yourself first. Last week of May! Have you hit your goals this month? ✨ Funny. Now, I’m talking about goals! When I did this piece about 4 years ago, I intended to train and learn about lettering using watercolor. That was my 2015 goal. ✨ However, experimenting that year resulted to me loving my fineliners even more. Sorry watercolors, you were never meant for me. So this piece was my first and last watercolor lettering. ✨ Looking back, I never regretted my decision a bit. I embraced my undying love for pencil and fineliners instead of going with the trend. I was never into trends anyway (always the rebel). ✨ I want to share this story with you because I know that starting your lettering journey will come with so many doubts, questions, experimentations and frustrations. But I want you to know that they are valid emotions and totally ok! ✨ This journey is never easy but you’ll only come out victorious if you know how to recognize your strengths as well as your weaknesses. It’s ok to try it all! Play. Experiment. Fail. Then, LEARN. ✨ Progress is progress. No matter how small or slow or frustrating it is, you’ll continue to grow as long as you continue to work. 2018 was filled with black and whites. I’ve seen the good and the bad and appreciate them both for what they are. Because they serve their purpose and whether or not it’s in my favor, I’ll still choose to see the good. There’s always a good side. You just have to acknowledge it.. . Things happen for a reason but celebrating the good is more powerful than wallowing in sorrow and regret. The way you perceive things matter. .
