As someone in film school, this goes so hard. Something we’re taught in our first semester that just keeps getting harped on as we further our education is that the audience is key. Before you even start forming your own ideas for creative projects, they’re teaching to ask: who is this for? What will they think about this? Who could you sell this to?

Don’t get me wrong: I love my professors and my program. I have learned a lot of useful things that I will carry past film school. But as someone who never plans to use film as a means to make money (if we’re being honest, I’m so disillusioned with the industry that I likely will fall back on my second major, at this point), this was something that was nice to be reminded of. Create, even if no one will read/watch/see your work. Create, even if no one ever gives you money for it. Create for you. You are your first and most important audience. Create for you.

Content is everywhere! You don't have to think too much about where to find them. Even the mundane can be turned into something valuable. Make it yours! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How? Let's dig deeper into that by getting into some examples I personally used - ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Saw a tree bark while walking to the park --> went home and lettered a wood-inspired E for my compilation ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. I admire @laurenastondesigns giant chunky knits ---> so I lettered a yarn inspired letter E! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Walked by the pool and almost tripped because of rocks ---> created some rock-inspired E ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why E? No specific reason other than it was the letter compilation I was working on at the time. I was feeling stuck and can't move forward so I stopped and waited for more ideas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you keep overthinking, you'll eventually get exhausted. Sometimes, it's better to just stop and pause and do something else. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You'll be amazed by the new ideas you'll come up with when you take time to have breaks too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Look at other things to do. Pay attention to your surroundings. Took me a while to finally understand how to create content using inspiration from my daily life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It doesn't happen fast but if you start noticing things, make sure to take notes. An unwritten idea is a forgotten idea. So write them down. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Finally, relate them to whatever it is you're working on. Sometimes it might work and sometimes it won't but when you practice doing it, it becomes easier and in time, it's going to be a natural thing for you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hope this helps! 🎁 📷 🎞 • I’ve been dabbling in the world of photography since as far back as I can remember. After tinkering in the digital realm for what feels like the longest time, I recently revisited film with my Holga 120 Twin Lens Reflex camera and it’s reignited something within me. The recent experiments in the medium have started a number of conversations with fellow photographers. We’ve shared ideas, experiences and our mutual enthusiasm for the art form. I’ve not felt this inspired and excited about taking stills in a while. Anyway, one of the fellow creatives with whom I had a back-n-forth is @mattheathart. He has a long history of working in the visual landscape (e.g. art direction concept art, etc.), currently illustrating in the games, advertising and film space. You should definitely check out his body of work. It’s rad! Further to his expertise in the area, he enjoys surrounding himself with other artists, sharing the knowledge and keeping the dialogue alive. So, it’s really no surprise that he puts on a sketch meetup in one of the bars in Sydney (CBD) on Monday evenings. Naturally, being in town for the holiday season my mate @quickdraw13 encouraged me to come along. So, you know, I did. After the session, to my surprise, Matt walks over with a brown paper bag and says, “I’ve got a Christmas present for you, Dre.” Inside the bag I find a Yashica-D (medium format film TLR camera). Speechless, I stand there like a fool for a moment as Matt continues, “I know you’ll put this to good use.” Man, are you kidding!? I couldn’t agree more. Of course I will. This gem of a piece of equipment hadn’t been touched in a while, he felt it needed a new and worthy home and so he’s passed it on to me. I can’t thank Matt enough for the super thoughtful and generous gift. I’m pumped to learn all that there is to know about this beautiful instrument, load it up and take it out for a spin. I shall share my creations with y’all soon. Watch this space! _ Real talk. I lost my two main clients at the start of this year, right when I had leveraged all my assets to pay off my new camera and at a time I wanted to finally pay off last year’s taxes. _ I am flat broke and currently have no paid gigs on the horizon, yet somehow feel like there’s not even remotely enough time to put out all I have to give. Here’s to leaning into the life I know I’m here to live, sharing the love I know I’m here to share, yet have been previously too afraid to really try. _ And I’ll be the first to admit that a fair portion of this lack of work is “my fault.” I’ve come to a place in my life where I refuse to do work that compromises my ethics, to take a sweet paycheck in exchange for my complicity in contributing to some of our culture’s greatest ills. I cannot choose to profit off harming someone else or the environment. It’s simple, but creates some challenges for sure.
