Well, @terrycrews. This, my man, is a long-overdue admiration post. About five years ago, we met while I was working on a TV show. I knew your work from Idiocracy, Baadassssss!, and a ton of memorable character roles. But that day on set was an enlightening moment for me. . I was on a journey trying to figure myself out. I’d just started writing about fatherhood & looking at the man I wanted to be. That day, I met you & your family. You just blew me away. Thoughtfulness. Creativity. I turned to the people around me & said this guy is the real deal. . For months, I’ve watched people critique, shame, badger, and troll you for speaking out. They’ve questioned your masculinity and your truthfulness. But I have to say there’s nothing more masculine than a man standing up and speaking his truth, regardless of those barking at him. . As a father of 2 boys, I want to make sure they know the power of vulnerability, speaking the truth, and advocating for those without an equal voice. As someone who identifies as male, I look to offer what I can as a grown man. They see these actions as expressions of strength. . So, on this rainy Saturday in Los Angeles, I hope you know you have someone in your corner trying to do what you do, albeit with a smaller sphere of influence. For prejudice and sexism to end, it requires those who comprise the group responsible for that behavior to do something. . __ PS: My boys wanted me to tell you that you’re the real Ultimate Beastmaster. They’re currently jumping off the couch giving me a heart attack watching the first season of the show again for the 2,359,745th time. My son can’t sleep. So, I guess this is a thing that’s happening for the first time.

Sometimes my son asks me if I’m nervous or scared.

Today, my son sat in a room with a couple hundred people and listened as I rambled on about how our sons will be key in support of movements around equality, gender, and empathy. He heard me detail my belief that parents should be led by their kids’ self-expression and how we should push our own boundaries of expression so we can feel more comfortable giving them room to explore their identities. He asked me if I felt nervous during the talk. I said I felt something that could easily be confused for fear or nerves but it’s part of the fun of pushing yourself. I hope he heard the part where I told the crowd how much I hope he can change the way we love ourselves.

Decided to take the kids out and, you know, march for their lives. I saw one protest sign from a teacher that encapsulated my current feelings on the matter: “I need a gun on my desk about as much as Isaac needs another f*#%ing fidget spinner.” My 8-year-old remarked how much enjoyed getting to read new swear words on signs. I can’t compete with that. I kinda do, too. My new rally cry? Beards over bullets.

Sometimes kids gut punch you with cuteness and brilliance.

“Family means love, and warmth, and kindness. My personal definition is: Some families are bonded by blood and some families are bonded by love.” - Finn, 8 years-old (at Los Angeles, California)
