Eurydice (Ancient Greek: Εὐρυδίκη 'wide justice',) was a character in Greek mythology and the wife of musician Orpheus, who loved her dearly; on their wedding day, he played joyful songs as his bride danced through the meadow. One day, Aristaeus saw and pursued Eurydice, who stepped on a viper, was bitten, and died thereafter. Distraught, Orpheus played and sang so mournfully that all the nymphs and deities wept and told him to travel to the Underworld to retrieve her, which he gladly did. After his music softened the hearts of Hades and Persephone, his singing so sweet that even the Erinyes wept, he was allowed to take her back to the world of the living. In another version, Orpheus played his lyre to put Cerberus, the guardian of Hades, to sleep, after which Eurydice was allowed to return with Orpheus to the world of the living. Either way, the condition was attached that he must walk in front of her and not look back until both had reached the upper world. Soon, he began to doubt that she was there, suspecting that Hades had deceived him. Just as he reached the portals of Hades and daylight, he turned around to gaze on her face, and because Eurydice had not yet crossed the threshold, she vanished back into the Underworld.
In the Late Post-Classic Maya mythology of the Popol Vuh, Camazotz are the bat-like spirits encountered by the Maya Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque during their trials in the underworld of Xibalba. The twins had to spend the night in the House of Bats, where they squeezed themselves into their own blowguns in order to defend themselves from the circling bats. Hunahpu stuck his head out of his blowgun to see if the sun had risen and Camazotz immediately snatched off his head and carried it to the ballcourt to be hung up as the ball to be used by the gods in their next ballgame.
Propaganda supplied by the submitter:
Name means "Death Bat". Very gothy. Serves the lords of Xibalba (Underworld). Associated with night, death, and sacrifice.

Lugh or Lug (Old Irish: [l͈uɣ]; modern Irish: Lú [l̪ˠuː]) is a figure in Irish mythology. A member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a group of supernatural beings, Lugh is portrayed as a warrior, a king, a master craftsman and a saviour. He is associated with skill and mastery in multiple disciplines, including the arts. Lugh also has associations with oaths, truth, and the law, and therefore with rightful kingship. Lugh is linked with the harvest festival of Lughnasadh, which bears his name. Lugh is typically described as a youthful warrior. In the brief narrative Baile in Scáil, Lugh is described as being very large and very beautiful and a spear-wielding horseman. Elsewhere Lugh is described as a tall young man with bright red cheeks, white sides, a bronze-coloured face and blood-coloured hair.
In C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy, Malacandra, known on Earth as Mars, Mavors, and Tyr, was the fourth planet of the Field of Arbol and located between Thulcandra and Glundandra (Jupiter), just before the Asteroids. The surface of Malacandra was once all inhabitable, but then The Bent One destroyed its outer layer, and the inhabitants of Malacandra where forced to live in handramits, large deep cracks or canyons in the ground. Only Sorns can live above the handramits. Malacandra is an old world, and is predicted to be one of the first worlds that will be removed from the Field of Arbol. Malacandra is "the world that never fell" and remains a perfect, Edenic society. Technically, Malacandra was damaged in the Fall, but not in the moral sense. Oyarsa states that everyone used to live on the surface, but The Bent One damaged the planet, forcing him to dig out canyons or Handramits for most people to live in. Morally, however, all of Malacandra's inhabitants are upright. The real Edenic world however, is Perelandra, as some individuals on Malacandra are "bent".

In Greek antiquity, Hermione (Ancient Greek: Ἑρμιόνη) was the daughter of Menelaus, king of Sparta, and his wife, Helen of Troy. Prior to the Trojan War, Hermione had been betrothed by Tyndareus, her grandfather, to her cousin Orestes, son of her uncle, Agamemnon. She was just nine years old when Paris, son of the Trojan king Priam, arrived to abduct her mother, Helen. During the war, Menelaus promised her to Achilles' son, Neoptolemus. After the war ended, he sent Hermione away to the city of Phthia (the home of Peleus and Achilles), where Neoptolemus was staying. The two were married, yet, soon afterwards, Neoptolemus traveled to Delphi in order to exact vengeance against Apollo for having caused his father's death, only to be killed there. With Neoptolemus dead, Hermione was free to marry Orestes, with whom she had a son, Tisamenus.
Samsin Halmeoni (Korean: 삼신 할머니; Hanja: 삼神 할머니), also called Grandmother Samsin, is the goddess of childbirth and fate in Korean mythology. Sam means "pregnancy" in Korean, sin or shin means god(dess), halmeoni means grandmother, a title for a venerated ancestor goddess, embodied as a wise crone goddess. When addressed with the honorary title Samsin halmeoni or just Samsin, the pregnancy goddessess are also thought of as goddess of childbirth in Korean shamanism. Since the phonetic notation of Sam is 三(means three), it has also been interpreted in relation to the number 3. Samsin halmeoni would protect every child from birth until the seventh year of age, where the child would then be protected by the deity of Seven Stars, the Ursa Major bear. Every village and every house would have its own Samsin of childbirth.

Laima is a Baltic goddess of fate. She was associated with childbirth, marriage, and death; she was also the patron of pregnant women. In Latvian mythology, Laima and her sisters, Kārta and Dēkla, were a trinity of fate deities, similar to the Norse Norns or the Greek Moirai. Laima makes the final decision on individual's fate and is considerably more popular. While all three of them had similar functions, Laima is the Goddess of luck and is more related with mothers and childbirth, Dēkla is in charge of children, and Kārta holds power over the adult's life. In Lithuanian mythology, one of the most important duties of Laima is to prophesy how the life of a newborn will take place. Sometimes there was only one Laima, while in other cases three Laimas would give often contradictory predictions. The final pronouncement would be irrevocable and not even Laima herself could change it. [image credit]
In the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, Mandos was the Doomsman of the Valar who pronounced judgement in matters of fate. He was the keeper of the slain in his Halls in the west of Valinor. He pronounced his judgements at the bidding of Manwë. However only Ilúvatar knew with full certainty what the full doom of Arda would be, and would not reveal it all, even to Mandos or Manwë. Mandos and Manwë were always allied since their entering into Eä, and together they understood most clearly the Vision of Ilúvatar more than any of the other Valar. Mandos is said to be the grimmest of the Valar. However, this in no way implies that Mandos is dark or evil. His grimness is wholly part of his nature, coming (one must assume) from that part of the mind of Ilúvatar from which he came. Neither is Mandos willful or malevolent in declaring the fates of Arda.

Season two planning
A category can be as obscure as you wish or as broad, maybe your category has sub-categories in which case those categories will run and then they run against eachother for the big category.
Please submit categories here:
As for contestants, those can also be submited, the google questionaire will be updated with all new categories submited as we go.
Submit contestants per category here:
Fair warning, I will be keeping strictly to Tumblr guidelines, so while a true crime category is allowed, it is not allowed to discuss what things happened in it in more detail then "A murdered B" or "C was found in a chimney". This to avoid being striked down anywhere during this.

With everyone throwing around their nominations and the conclave voting in the next few days, I thought it was prudent that Tumblr gets to weigh in on this event.
Welcome to the Pope Polls, where you nominate your favorite character (or who ever you'd like) to become pope. Tumblr Sexy Man competition finished off the last one so we should use the same method to make sure the next one can withstand the shock.
This is the submission forum to nominate you character. I'll leave it open for about a week or so before closing it and starting the tournament. I do not know how many rounds we'll do yet, I'll wait to see if we get any nominations.

New poll blog advertisement comm:
The Pollsters' Place!
I made it because I thought it would help if there were a more open comm where people can advertise their polls, even if they don't specifically run a poll blog or tournament. It's also meant to be for talking shop as far as increasing engagement and for one another to reblog polls to help one another.
I'm seeking 3-5 mods, too! You can join the comm by following this link here.

When I first created this blog, people requested that we pit not only historical mythological figures, but fictional and religious figures as well. However, this decision seems to have been controversial and I get asks about these decisions more than any other aspect of running this blog.
The outcome of this poll will be binding and irrefutable.

The Lady of the Lake is a title used by multiple characters in the Matter of Britain, the body of medieval literature and mythology associated with the legend of King Arthur. As either actually fairy or fairy-like yet human enchantresses, they play important roles in various stories, notably by providing Arthur with the sword Excalibur, eliminating the wizard Merlin, raising the knight Lancelot after the death of his father, and helping to take the dying Arthur to Avalon after his final battle. Different Ladies of the Lake appear concurrently as separate characters in some versions of the legend since at least the Post-Vulgate Cycle and consequently the seminal Le Morte d'Arthur, with the latter describing them as members of a hierarchical group, while some texts also give this title to either Morgan or her sister.
Propaganda from the submitter:
There are literally so many versions of her that whatever role you want her to take in the Arthurian legend, she probably already has taken in at least one version. She contains multitudes (literally!)
In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Creator was the designation given by V'ger to the entity that had created it. V'ger, however, did not know what the Creator was, but believed that it was an artificial lifeform, like itself. The goal of V'ger's journey was to find the Creator, to join with it and become one with the Creator. After Spock had mind melded with V'ger, he commented: "It only knows that it needs… But like so many of us, it does not know what." In the 2270s, when V'ger arrived to "the Creator's planet", Earth, the Creator did not respond to it. V'ger initially thought that the Human "infestation" of Earth was somehow interfering with the Creator. It was then discovered that V'ger was in fact the ancient Earth probe Voyager 6, and that 20th century Humans were its creators. V'ger's ultimate goal, to find the Creator and merge with it was achieved when Will Decker chose to sacrifice himself to save Earth and merged with V'ger.

In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first human woman created by Hephaestus on the instructions of Zeus. The Pandora myth is a kind of theodicy, addressing the question of why there is evil in the world, according to which, Pandora opened a jar (pithos; commonly referred to as "Pandora's box") releasing all the evils of humanity. It has been argued that Hesiod's interpretation of Pandora's story went on to influence both Jewish and Christian theology and so perpetuated her bad reputation into the Renaissance. Later poets, dramatists, painters and sculptors made her their subject.
In Greek mythology, Thisbe, from the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, is one of a pair of ill-fated lovers from Babylon, whose story is best known from Ovid's narrative poem Metamorphoses. Pyramus and Thisbe's parents, driven by rivalry, forbade their union, but they communicated through a crack in the wall between their houses. They planned to meet under a mulberry tree, but a series of tragic misunderstandings led to their deaths: Thisbe fled from a lioness, leaving her cloak behind, which Pyramus found and mistook as evidence of her death. Believing Thisbe was killed by the lioness, Pyramus committed suicide, staining the mulberry fruits with his blood. Thisbe, upon finding Pyramus dead, also killed herself. The gods changed the color of the mulberry fruits to honor their forbidden love.

Ammit was an ancient Egyptian goddess with the forequarters of a lion, the hindquarters of a hippopotamus, and the head of a crocodile—the three largest "man-eating" animals known to ancient Egyptians. In ancient Egyptian religion, Ammit played an important role during the funerary ritual, the Judgment of the Dead. Unlike other gods featured in ancient Egyptian religion, Ammit was not worshipped. Instead, Ammit was feared and believed to be a demon rather than a deity, due to her role as the 'devourer of the dead'. During the New Kingdom, deities and demons were differentiated by having a cult or center of worship. Demons in ancient Egyptian religion had supernatural powers and roles, but were ranked below the gods and did not have a place of worship. In the case of Ammit, she was a guardian demon. A guardian demon was tied to a specific place, such as Duat.
In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces. The month of January is named for Janus (Ianuarius). Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. The gates of a building in Rome named after him (not a temple, as it is often called, but an open enclosure with gates at each end) were opened in time of war, and closed to mark the arrival of peace. As a god of transitions, he had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange, and in his association with Portunus, a similar harbor and gateway god, he was concerned with travelling, trading and shipping.

In Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet is a warrior goddess as well as goddess of medicine. Sekhmet is also a solar deity, sometimes given the epithet 'the eye of Ra'. She is often associated with the goddesses Hathor and Bastet. Sekhmet is said to breathe fire, and the hot winds of the desert were likened to her breath. She is also believed to cause plagues (which were described as being her servants or messengers) although she is also called upon to ward off disease and heal the sick.
In Norse mythology, Skaði is a jötunn and goddess associated with bowhunting, skiing, winter, and mountains. Skaði is the daughter of the deceased Þjazi, and Skaði married the god Njörðr as part of the compensation provided by the gods for killing her father Þjazi. In Heimskringla, Skaði is described as having split up with Njörðr and as later having married the god Odin, and that the two produced many children together. In both the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, Skaði is responsible for placing the serpent that drips venom onto the bound Loki.
