Nagi realizing the effects his words had on Reo (to an extent) and resolving to apologize...

> "I need to see you... and tell you..."

is an interesting line to me. It could just mean, 'i need to tell you I'm sorry', but Nagi has said "when I see you [Reo], I need to tell you-" about multiple things- specifically things he's learned... do you think a part of him wants to tell Reo he's learned about dreams? Despair? Reo's feelings?

> "I have to win here, otherwise I'll have no right to see you!"

NAGI'S EGO?! WINNING TO PRESERVE THE RIGHT TO FACE REO?!!!? Amen kaneshiro,,,

Also that line either means he believes in Reo so hard he didn't consider a possibility where Reo doesn't pass 2nd selection OR that if they both dropped out of blue lock, Nagi would never be able to face Reo out of shame for his own carelessness. Either way they're insane for that and they make ME insane

I saw the leaks on chapter 284....and I am dismayed.

The thing I fear the most has finally happened: Blue Lock has entered the Upgrade Flow era.

For those unfamiliar with the term, Upgrade Flow/Level-Up Flow is a genre in Chinese web novels where the focus is on characters going from weak to strong to stronger, until they’re the most powerful person ever. Upgrade flows are not inherently bad, but most novels falling under it tend to have a Mary Sue/Gary Stu protagonist who is always able to easily resolve any conflict that comes their way…and that’s what make it awful. The character’s achievements begin to feel insignificant because there was hardly anything at stake and, well, it’s not really a surprise when they succeed because the author is obviously gonna let them.

Although Isagi hasn’t turned into a Gary Stu, his achievements have begun to feel meaningless to me. And I hate that.

For several chapters now, things have been going too smoothly for Isagi. The one down moment he had was when Noa rejected him, but even that was quickly brushed aside. Now, Isagi is just that guy who only ever thinks about winning and nothing else. It would’ve been cool if Kaneshiro explained what exactly about winning that makes him crave for it so much, but nope, he made his character too simple: Isagi wants to win for winning’s sake.

And we’re supposed to cheer? Celebrate how this so “egoistic”?

Nah, I just find it incredibly boring, unoriginal, and totally vague. Everybody wants to win. Isagi’s ego here isn’t special.

All the other characters are more specific: Rin with his obsession on death, Kaiser on love, Barou on being a King, etc. etc.

But Isagi? He’s shaping up to be the next Doctor Faustus.

If Isagi were any other character, then whatever. But as the protagonist who’s meant to embody Blue Lock’s ideal, Isagi’s ego being “right” matters a lot. Because if his new ego is final, then that would be sending out the message that the Right path to success is simply pursuing for what you want with no regard to anything else. Selling yourself to the devil, to the speak.

Isagi is so high on ego right now, and I worry that sooner or later he’s gonna end up like Mickey...
