🐛 Back in March, I quite literally lost my mind. I was admitted to a psych ward and diagnosed with Bipolar I. That diagnosis wasn't especially surprising given that mental illness runs in my family. Over the past few days I've been reading about the disorder and piecing together times in my life where it took over and made things unmanageable. My coming out as trans was one of those times. The positive attention I received, while appreciated, exacerbated my hypomania and led me into a severe mixed manic/depressive episode wherein I convinced myself that, among other more disturbing things, I was 'a woman trapped in a man's body.' Now that I have some hindsight, proper medication, and more of an understanding of my condition, I want to make a clarification. To me, the human experience isn't a binary, its a gradient spectrum. And at the moment, I identify as a NonBinary Person. My preferred pronouns are they/them. I love the name Naydean and will be keeping it as a stage/pen name, but you can still call me Nathan or Nate. I drew this little guy on my apartment's communal whiteboard about a month ago when I truly felt like I was walking on sunshine. Unfortunately, as things go, my mood has shifted back down into a depressive state. I feel like its important to note that my coming out/identity revelation was deeply entangled with a bout of severe mania that landed me in a psych ward for a week. While I was manic, I felt like a primal force was animating me. I felt like everything finally made sense in my life and my path was clear. Now that force has gone dormant and my sense of clarity along with it. I am confronted with questions from inside myself, like "did you just do this for the attention?" "what are you trying to prove?" "are you really cut out to be what you say you want to be?" "did you really feel 'god' or was it all just chemicals?"
