just found out in medieval france, having a lion on your coat of arms was so prevalent that there was literally a colloquial proverb to clown on knights for being basic and not having a real coat of arms. the hate game was so strong back then. imagine medieval hate anons

Post I just saw made me think of this again: Wei Wuxian does not have self-esteem issues.
He thinks he's amazing, because he is.
His sense of his own value is a little fucked up, and tied up in demonstrating how amazing he is by fixing all serious problems and mocking all stupid ones, and when his methods stop working and he can no longer prove this to his own satisfaction he has a profound crisis about it, which he's still shaking off when we meet him.
But self-esteem is super very much not a thing he struggles with. He is a genius who received regular validation about his excellence in a form that satisfied him both as very a small child and from the ages of ~8 to ~17. He has a clear system of ethics which he is most of the time able and willing to act on; he feels really good about himself as a person whenever severe trauma is not actively making that very hard to do.
His default state is obnoxiously high self-esteem.
In-story accusations of arrogance are strictly speaking correct, it's just that most of the inferences about the rest of his character people draw from this trait are deeply wrong.
His willingness to self-destruct is at least as heavily wrapped up in his conviction that because he's so awesome and tough and clever he can handle things other people can't, as it is in the idea that he's disposable.
So yeah the thing is. He really genuinely actually did sacrifice himself for Jiang Cheng in part because he thinks he's better than Jiang Cheng. Stronger, braver, smarter. More adaptable.
And he was right! And Jiang Cheng knows he was right!
Which I love because like. That's not a relationship conflict you can fix, exactly. You really do have to just...get over it, or don't. And one of the things Wei Wuxian was demonstrating his (well-founded) lack of faith in Jiang Cheng's ability to do was. Getting Over Things.
#mdzs#cql#all the above is true plus I think 'self esteem' might be the wrong metric to judge wei wuxian by in a lot of cases#because yes he does have a high opinion of himself and his abilities#but he's also not shy about self-recrimination or a bit of self loathing now and then#but as op says it's not rooted in a lack of confidence#we can probably draw a firm line between the jiang sect's motto and wei wuxian getting approval from jiang fengmian for meeting it#and a lot of wei wuxian's seemingly unreasonable standards#it's not that he hates himself or takes any excuse to berate himself#like all issues of arrogance aside -- self-esteem doesn't always have anything to do with one's skills or abilities#but with how well one meets their own idea of who they want to be or think they should be#wei wuxian is supposed to be the one who pulls off impossible things or tries the insane solution that gets the best results#if he stops doing that then he stops being the kind of disciple who earned jiang fengmian's praise and that does challenge his self-esteem#the same way that if jiang cheng lets things go then he stops being the son who took after his mother and loses that link to her#they're both horribly traumatized by jiang fengmian and yu ziyuan's deaths AND fucked up by the way those two raised them beforehand#the golden core transfer is just the midway point in the trauma conga line that dooms their relationship

what’s always been funny to me is that haru and rin are both established jealous people but while rin is always viciously fighting off hoards of haru’s other bishounen admirers, haru never really has a moment where he becomes jealous over rin despite feeling the same way about him, and thats literally just because nobody fucking wants him. the hottest man alive and nobody wants him. nobody hypes up his swimming, nobody tries to isekai him into the basketball team. nobody wants to bag him. instead they want to bag haru, who would sooner die of hypoxia than reveal himself as a nuanced human being, and makoto, a violently sexless elderly labrador of a man who carries himself with an energy that makes scrappy young british blokes want to help him cross the street. meanwhile haru wants to bag the hottest man alive and makoto wants to bag happiness and stable harmony within his friend group, completely unaware that 85% of it wants to date him. if you look into this animes romantic subtext with zero fandom input you realize the funniest thing ever is happening
#idk what to tag this. this is a i just smorked a bong type post#free!#haruka nanase#rin matsuoka#makoto tachibana#rinharu

I think I may never be sad ever again. There is a statue entitled "Farewell to Orpheus" on my college campus. It's been there since 1968, created by a Prof. Frederic Littman that use to work at the university. It sits in the middle of a fountain, and the fountain is often full of litter. I have taken it upon myself to clean the litter out when I see it (the skimmers only come by once a week at max). But because of my style of dress, this means that bystanders see a twenty-something on their hands and knees at the edge of the fountain, sleeves rolled up, trying not to splash dirty water on their slacks while their briefcase and suit coat sit nearby. This is fine, usually. But today was Saturday Market, which means the twenty or so people in the area suddenly became hundreds. So, obviously, somebody stopped to ask what I was doing. "This," I gestured at the statue, "is Eurydice. She was the wife of Orpheus, the greatest storyteller in Greece. And this litter is disrespectful." Then, on a whim, I squinted up at them. "Do you know the story of Orpheus and Eurydice?" "No," they replied, shifting slightly to sit.
"Would you like to?"
"Sure!"
So I told them. I told them the story as I know it- and I've had a bit of practice. Orpheus, child of a wishing star, favorite of the messenger god, who had a hard-working, wonderful wife, Eurydice; his harp that could lull beasts to passivity, coax song from nymphs, and move mountains before him; and the men who, while he dreamed and composed, came to steal Eurydice away. I told of how she ran, and the water splashed up on my clothes. But I didn't care. I told of how the adder in the field bit her heel, and she died. I told of the Underworld- how Orpheus charmed the riverman, pacified Cerberus with a lullaby, and melted the hearts of the wise judges. I laughed as I remarked how lucky he was that it was winter- for Persephone was moved by his song where Hades was not. She convinced Hades to let Orpheus prove he was worthy of taking Eurydice. I tugged my coat back on, and said how Orpheus had to play and sing all the way out of the Underworld, without ever looking back to see if his beloved wife followed. And I told how, when he stopped for breath, he thought he heard her stumble and fall, and turned to help her up- but it was too late. I told the story four times after that, to four different groups, each larger than the last. And I must have cast a glance at the statue, something that said "I'm sorry, I miss you--" because when I finished my second to last retelling, a young boy piped up, perhaps seven or eight, and asked me a question that has made my day, and potentially my life: "Are you Orpheus?" I told the tale of the grieving bard so well, so convincingly, that in the eyes of a child I was telling not a story, but a memory. And while I laughed in the moment, with everyone else, I wept with gratitude and joy when I came home. This is more than I deserve, and I think I may never be sad again.
Here is the aforementioned statue, by the way.

guys. guys. katekyo hitman reborn is a tragedy. i know it's just an anime about kids, but just listen. it's a tragedy about lost childhood, irresponsible adults, fatalism, and the fact that your choices don't matter - they've already been made for you. tsuna never had a choice, everything was decided for him years ago. he can't save his family - his family will follow him, he loves them and tries to protect them and they love him, so they follow him. there is no escape. and you know what the most terrifying about it? it is all happening because tsuna loves his family and will do anything for their safety. and his family is going to do whatever it takes for tsuna’s safety. because of love. fate uses love to achieve its goal.
reborn is just a tool. the tenth generation of vongola is just part of a cycle that can't be broken. one day, they will become the ones who will ruin the lives of other children.
and history will repeat itself again.

The two best reasons to ship anything are:
1.Incredible deep and detailed narrative themes. The parallels that seem to hit just right, the narrative foils that they can be to each other, the intricate dynamic that's both extremely complex and easily understood. The juxtaposition between something that's harsh and undoubtedly toxic, with the softer undertones, the parts where you read in-between the lines and find a mutual feeling of loneliness from both parts, their intrinsic understanding of each other comes from the mere fact that they're each others mirrored reflections and shadows. In the end both sides will be together forever, and you as an audience can clearly see their tragedy laid out before in a path that blurs pure anguish and tender romance
2.It would be so fucking funny

The funniest canonical thing in Katekyo hitman reborn in my opinion is the fact that Tsuna cannot multiple by 7.
Literally everything in his universe is centered around there being seven of those things (or people)
Reborn: so, there will be 23 families in attendance, all with complete sets of guardians, so 7 ppl each. For how many people we need to order catering? Tsuna: 42 Reborn, endlessly tired atp: not even close. Try again? Tsuna: i don't like this game.
#katekyo hitman reborn#sawada tsunayoshi#reborn khr#khr#I am again reminded why I love this manga so much#God bless daily life arc#Tsuna is pretty smart tho#Just not in math#I headcanon him to be exelent in physics#b.c. of all the flying stuff he does#plus he's good at people & common sense - a rare gift in Reborn! universe#Literally all of his enemies turned into allies#(except Demon Spade - that one died)

I fucking love the different relationship Bakugou and Todoroki have with anger. On the one hand we have Todoroki who at the start of the story was closed off and the only emotion he clearly showed was anger. But having been a victim of his father's anger all his life he views the emotion negatively, so his bursts of anger are impulsive and fade quickly because of how much he associates it with the hurt his family has been through. And with his anger inevitably comes out all his frustration and hurt. It’s no coincidence that Midoriya first saw Todoroki’s hurt at the Sports Festival after he froze the whole stadium in a burst of anger directed at his father. But at the same time he uses the emotion as a weapon against his father, when the anger is projected towards and against Endeavor it becomes the only emotion Shouto allows himself to feel, canceling in a way the guilt he feels for being angry.
And then we have Bakugou who in a way uses his anger to show all his range of emotions. Every time he cries, he’s frustrated, there’s always a layer of anger under the surface, because feeling anger comforts him. For Bakugou anger is an overall positive emotion that helps him to understand and release all his other feelings. It's the emotion he processes best and the one that helps him process all his other emotions. His anger can be grounding, it can be the brust of energy he needs to keep going whether it's a fight or something else, it can be a force to fight against to discover his true feelings. It guides him, if he manages to control and own it. When he shows anger or is aggressive if we pay close enough attention we can see that it's protecting himself from letting others see what he's really feeling.
Bakugou uses anger to hide his true feelings from others. Todoroki uses anger to hide his true feelings from himself.

Just saw a video analysis about if the Scooby gang could beat Light Yagami. I wasn’t worried about the gang but I didn’t realize how cooked Light was. Velma alone is way smarter than L, Freddy would instantly see through the trapped drawer that hid the Death Note and Scooby is such a wildcard overall, who is immune to the Death Note because he isn’t human. So even if he gets the rest of the gang, Scooby is coming with a vengeance.
Funniest scenario is Shaggy and Scooby trailing Light only to be confronted by him. Light tries to kill Shaggy but can’t because he would never just give away his name as “Norville Rogers.” Light thinks Shaggy is some genius playing fourth-dimensional chess with him.
