I just came across this blog and my goodness are you cool and nice! Thanks for running a blog like this, just helping people out with such a little thing but with so much joy. It brought such a wonderful spot of happiness to my day :)

Whenever I get an ask, I am instantly ready to answer a question, and research it all for you guys, and make a list and check it twice, and I lovelovelove all of that, let me tell you. Naming things and places and characters and people has always been a weird thing I’ve loved to do.

A secret society of supernatural hunters. That is… definitely in the top five of my favourite things I’ve been asked to name on this blog. Thank you so much.

As usual, I’m going to give you a bit of a template to work from so you can mix and match what you like to create your own.

From my research, I’ve found that secret societies often have “The Order of” or “The Knights of” or “The Sons of” along with words like ‘Independent’,  ‘Brotherhood’ ‘Ancient’ or ‘Hermetic’. (Slightly sexist, but so was the world. Feel free to change anything, it’s your world now.)

Typically, a secret society doesn’t advertise what they do in their name, so pick some imagery that speaks to you and go from there. Think about how they see themselves, or how the founders of the society saw themselves and their goal.

Putting all of that together, here are some examples:

i need your opinion! i'm torn between the names Aurelia and Aurora, i really like both but i'm not sure which one is the better option for my character. it'd be great to hear another take on what could suit :)

Agh, I understand this plight all too well. Aurelia has long been one of my favourite names, and Aurora is breathtaking too. Aurelia means gold and Aurora means dawn, so even the meanings are equally gorgeous.

I will say, however, that Aurora has associations that Aurelia does not. Aurora is both a Disney princess and a naturally occurring electrical phenomenon in the sky - both of which are beautiful, but they will likely come to a person’s head before your character does.

Aurelia is the Portuguese-speaking character in Love, Actually, but other than that (unless you’re familiar with the JavaScript framework of the same name), it’s association-free, so the name will belong especially to your character.

This is all subjective of course; we all think of a different Harry when the name comes up. So the choice is yours. I actually find that flipping a coin helps -  if only to show you whether you’re relieved/disappointed when forced to choose one. If it lands on tails and you’re disappointed, go with heads.
