Hello here’s a list of things I’ve learned about my friend during our choir trip to Europe that might make me catch feelings.

I’ve learned that if we’re in a big group, if I prefer to sit at a table by myself, 2 out of 3 times he sits at the table with me

He has a terrible British accent

I dragged myself down a really dumb tangent after seeing a dumb “why doesn’t the west celebrate south asia like they celebrate east asia” take from a brown so here’s my take on a universe where the west treated south asia like they treat east asia

1. “shah rukh is my soft boi”

2. People ordering so-called saris from shein and wearing them like towels

3. There’s a really popular shah rukh khan/saif ali khan ship and it’s fueled by kal ho naa go; there’s a lot of anti naina content to go with it

4. pyaari becomes a really popular and also misused term

5. ship edits of India and Pakistan

6. Everyone starts glorifying “Bangladeshi boyfriends”

7. Girlboss edits of Sivagami holding Mahendra Baahubali above water

8. #kalhoes is the kal ho naa ho fan name

9. People start contouring to give themselves desi noses

10. Weird edits of bhallaladeva strutting with the caption being “I can fix him”

11. No other South Indian movies being mentioned

12. Chota Bheem gets turned into a body pillow

Bruh if this manages to get into the south asian side of tumblr it’ll be a miracle

growing up mixed-caste is so bizarre because I fight against casteism, not just because of basic human decency, but because of what I’ve faced from the caste-privileged side of my family.

but my identity makes the issue a whole lot more confusing.

I have the privilege of being able to blend in with UC Hindus because of my surname, but the rituals and traditions I should theoretically know as a Brahmin I don’t know shit about because it was kept from me since my mother was caste-oppressed and my parents married without permission.

I can’t even ask questions about it because my dad likes to gloss it all over with “you’re technically a Brahmin you’re FINE” dawg tell that to your FAMILY they treat me and your WIFE like we’re outsiders. I couldn’t even ask my mother for clarification because she was so traumatized from what she faced as a Bahujan girl growing up that she refused to even consider the fact she alongside her own CHILD could still have been facing discrimination.

Are there any other mixed-caste south Asians out here, specifically those from both caste oppressed and caste privileged backgrounds? I am so baffled on this aspect of my identity.

Healthy distractions work really well for me. Humor works, busy your head, but know your emotions are valid. It’s okay that you’re feeling what you’re feeling, and it’ll be hard, but as time goes on, things will ease up a bit. Drawing, reading (that’s what I like to do), running (this helps release stress, and makes you feel good after you do it), and reaching out to those around you whether in person or online are some things that can help. But just know you’re not alone, and isolation will make it worse. Hang in there 🤎
