dante's words sound like those of a stranger rather than the man you love.

is this not the very same man who has watched you painstakingly dry petals from flowers he's given you and hand-stitch holes in his jacket?

you lean down to press your forehead against his, refusing to let him feel unloved for even the faintest moment, even if what he's saying is making your heart squeeze.

"well," you start, raising your brows and tilting your head. "i have to disagree there."

a frosty silence falls, moments ticking by marked by the sound of cicadas buzzing outside of the window.

"it's too much to keep asking from you."

it has always been too much to ask from someone so gentle and giving.

"you've never asked me to do anything for you at all." you pretend to think, poking the middle of his chest with your index finger. "actually, you have asked me to smile before but outside of that incident i can't come up with any others."

he chuckles, shaking his head.

you just don't get it.

"i ask you to tolerate all of, well...all of this."

he waves his hand around the dusty, messy space he calls home sweet home. over the pieces of a life he has had to shed blood, sweat, and tears to carve out. over what's left of his soul and the open window breeze-waving tatters of his sorrow.

the breeze blows through him, cold as the steely blue of his eyes when he gets like this.

you brush his hair off of his face, leaning back.

"what did i tell you about assuming how i feel?"

it's his worst habit.

you do your best to prevent it from starting — the snowball effect of thought and the way it tumbles downward into an avalanche of fear and decades old fear of abandonment. what if you go? what if he comes by one day to realize you've left him alone, just like everyone else?

unfortunately, you were not quick enough to push back the event this time. you will have to fix it as it comes while perched in his lap, your thighs spread while you straddle his hips. even if you wonder how he could ever think you don't adore him considering how freely you display it.

looks like it's time for another display, one you're all too glad to give.

"oh on the contrary, i love your mess." you brush that pesky hair that keeps falling down the middle of his face back yet again, wrapping it around your finger as you so easily have the whole of him around your own. "and your chaos." leaning in, you press your foreheads together once again, fingers naturally crawling up the bottom of his shirt to caress his torso.

"and you."

your fingers finally land between his pecs, splaying over his chest with your palm placed right against his beating heart. it pounds harder with every move you make.

"i love you, dante. every piece of you more than the last."

his heartbeat hasn't slowed since you started speaking. you smile down at him, seeing the color, the life, return to his face bit by bit.

"i wish you wouldn't say stuff like that to me." he jokes, hands that were balled into anxious fists mere minutes ago finding their homes on your hips.

"stuff like what? i love you."

you lean in to kiss him, soft and gentle.

he breaks the kiss, leaning back. "yeah."

his body yearns for more, head naturally falling back down so you can kiss him again.

"i think you just need to get used to hearing it."

he says nothing, only humming thoughtfully at your words and your poor attempt to stop kissing him. lips brush against lips brush against tongues brush against teeth and with every pause to take a breath, you say it again.

"i love you."

"i love you."

"i love you."

even after you're certain he'll get tired of hearing it, you say it again and every time he thinks he'll grow tired of it, his heart only swells hearing you say it one more time.

"i love you, dante."

when's the last time anyone told him they loved him at all?

hi anon, thank you for your kind words :D truthfully I used to be really slow at drawing but I kinda had to force myself to go faster for a challenge like this 🥲 just like other parts of drawing though it’s a skill that can be trained and im happy that I’ve improved at that over time
