Days Of Steam Episode 10 with Natural Language Processing (May 16, 2019)

Natural Language Processing (WSUM, Madison) delivers 2 hours of bangers and investigations into trance-space. "I viewed the mix as a 2 hour club set in isolation - starts slow, ends slow. I wanted to include a wide range of music the veers towards hedonistic while remaining fully functional and rhythmically interesting. It's a fine balance, in particular for the rave and trance tracks towards the end of the mix. I also made a point to include a number of Madison producers - it really feels like the scene is about to pop and I'm excited to see what happens with it. I throw a monthly party in Madison with some friends. The next on is May 18 with Harry Cross. I'll be opening up for Francis Inferno Orchestra on June 15 and Sandboards on July 7. More parties to come!"

Going on my first DJ tour next week, opening for David August as he presents his new album D’Angelo. It’s surreal now that it’s finally hitting me - I’ve been working with his tour manager and helping with a lot of behind the scenes work (website design, copywriting, etc), and also working as radio & press liaison for the album/tour. It’s my first time in a lot of these cities and I’m trying to plan something different for each place - the reality of it all is only just setting in but I’m proud to play out to you, as I hope to keep on doing for a long time coming.

Slim Media Player - Quicksand EP [Pacific Rhythm]

First appearing with two deep and intricate jams on Rhythms Of The Pacific Volume 3, Slim Media Player returns to Pacific Rhythm with his first solo EP. The four tracks - selected with the help of label head DJ D.DEE - were culled from over 20 hours of live jams and recordings over a period of 2 years, with peak-time jammers on the A side and softer vibes on the B side. Opener Quicksand is a piece of insistent exotica-tinged techno, with lo-fi circular rhythms and drum loops, slippery basslines, and distorted pads bracketed by machinery clanking away in the background, while the ZDBF remix gives it a big-room push, with digi-dub effects basking in solar radiation. Mouthfeel is funky but soft, with astral flutes, gentle pads, and reverbed shakers flowing and tumbling with the rhythm, strung with distant samples like half-forgotten memories that flash into your head on the dance floor. On the softer B-Side, Memory Bias (Nostalgia) mixes spacey Clone electronics with shuffling underwater rhythms, everything sounding like it’s on the verge of unspooling and reassembling, while the drifting ambient house closer Tschüss is anchored by a chiming and heavily filtered loop, with electric piano stabs and bottle percussion layered below and above; good tracks to build anticipation or finish out a wild night.
