I like the trope of can dance vs canât dance.
Soap who grew up going to church dances and private catholic school dances and balls, so he knows how to dance pretty much any kind of dance.
Ghost hadnât ever been to even a school dance. He preferred wandering around doing dumb shit like fighting or chasing bugs or whatever it is teenage boys do. He doesnât know how to dance, never bothered to learn, he doesnât even know how to grind to music at a club.
John doesnât care at first, really. Simon doesnât mind him dancing with strangers as long as he wanders off when it gets too serious. Simon encourages it, even, because he knows how much John loves to dance.
Heâs seen Simon try to dance. Simonâs awkward and embarrassed and stiff and after a few moments he runs away. The most he does is settle his hands on Johnâs hips and let John dance on him rather than join in.
And, John loves him, so it doesnât matter.
And John loves it when heâs in the kitchen and dancing while he cooks or washes dishes, and Simon is watching him with that stupidly soft expression. âCome dance with me.â
âI cant dance,â Simon says softly. He leans against the counter, teacup gently held close to his chest. John just continues swaying, holding his arms out and wiggling his fingers. âThereâs no music either.â
John does a spin and gathers Simonâs tea, setting it gently on the counter. Simon chuckles quietly. John pulls him away from the counter, settling Simonâs hands on his hips and wrapping arms around his neck to pull him closer. âItâs just swaying.â
Simon shakes his head a little, looking down at their feet and trying to keep the pace up. Itâs adorable how Simon struggles to keep up the slow circling motion, the way his eyebrows scrunch together when he misses a step. John bites his lip to hide a giggle when Simon nearly trips. âHoney, itâs swaying.â
âItâs not my fault i have two left feet and horrible balance.â John gently grabs the hair at the back of Simonâs neck. âFuckinâ dumb.â
John hums the beat of a song he doesnât remember the words to. âStop over thinkinâ.â John moves a hand to his face and cups his cheek. âLook at me.â
Simon looks up from their feet. âI donât wanna step on you.â
âYou wont. And if you do itâs okay.â
Simon frowns. âI cant dance.â
âJust sway to the beat.â John hums a little louder, dramatically swaying with Simon. Simonâs frown flips into the upside-down smile he has when heâs mildly embarrassed or insecure about a particular thing.
âWeâre gonna fall.â
âNo we wont.â
John isnât sure how long he hums the song, or how many times they almost fall from Simon tripping over his own feet, but itâs fine. The kitchen smells like lasagna in the oven, and Simon has started humming too.
Theyâll have to take a dancing class for their wedding. John doesnât mind.

09 ghost sleeps curled up as tight as possible; knees tucked to his chest, arms wrapped protectively around them, wedged into the corner against the wall. anything he can to try and feel secure
that doesn't change when he finally starts staying after sex with mactavish; even with mactavish there he just can't let himself relax. canât convince himself that heâs safe
mactavish notices; of course he does, he notices everything about riley
that's why he also notices when it starts to change
months pass and riley stops tucking his arms under his legs, instead just loosely holding them to his chest. then his legs start to relax, slowly spreading out until mactavish can fit his arm between them and his chest for riley to latch onto
it takes years, unwinding muscle by muscle before he finally sleeps splayed out across the bed. he doesn't shove himself into the corner anymore
instead, he trusts mactavish; trusts him to have his back, trusts his bulk to hide him from anyone that would burst through the door
he sleeps better with mactavish's arm slung over his waist, his stomach pressing into his back and legs tangled through his own, than he ever did curled into the corner

early access + nsfw on patreon
more backstory that i wrote up for patreon heh:
Simon and Tommy had a complicated relationship as brothers.Â
At a young age, Simon basically wrote himself off as a lost cause, and did the best he could to make sure at least Tommy had a chance to be a functioning human being. After all, Tommy was the gentler brother, the dreamer, the one who looked like their mother (who'd walked out on them years ago to escape their father). But Tommy got bitter, got sick of the one always being protected, being babied. He lost respect for Simon, for the way he wouldn't fight back, and in a twisted way, grew closer to his father as a way to learn how to be powerful, strong. It backfired, and Tommy got wrapped up in some bad business.
Simon's kid brother died while he was deployed. He got the news in the letter, and it broke him in a big way. In the story timeline, it was years and years ago but it still hurts like hell whenever Simon thinks about him.Â

ghost having a missing tooth. just a lateral incisor, lost it only a few years into the military, never bothered to have it properly replaced. he has a retainer with a fake tooth, sure, but thatâs a special occasion sort of thingâbecause why would he wear something for cosmetic purposes when his face is hidden behind a mask most of the time?
but when he and soap start going out, particularly on leave, ghost suddenly finds himself self-conscious and constantly wearing that retainer. even makes the stupid decision of eating with it in on occasion just because he doesnât want soap seeing the gap in his smile. which is weird for ghost, because heâs never felt embarrassed by it beforeâbut maybe with soap and his perfect smile, it makes ghost feel like heâs lacking in contrast.
soap finds out on leave, when their departures were staggered and ghost arrived home two days later than soap. he never bothered with the retainer that day, too tired from travel and work, and doesnât realize itâs missing until heâs pulling off his standard civilian-get-up-surgical-mask and smiling at soap in greeting.
itâs clear that soap notices immediately. his eyes flicker to the smile and a furrow finds his brow as he asked what happened in the past two days he was gone that had ghost missing a tooth.
ghostâs smile fades instantaneously before he ducks his head and mechanically utters out an explanation.
then soap asks to see his smile again. insists until ghost finally offers up a grimace, then contemplates it a moment before deeming it cute, of all things.
itâs only natural from there that soap does anything in his power to make ghost smile, because the missing tooth is something charming in a way soap canât explain. itâs just so very ghost, and how could soap not love that?

Johnny steals his clothes all the fuckin time.
To be fair, Ghost never expressed that he didn't want all his jackets taken. But it should have been obvious he needed at least one jacket, he thought.
Just the one time, he wants to take something of Soap's. Something he probably wouldn't care about. Everything was too small, really. And something about that made his heart squeeze in his chest.
Maybe he wanted it more than he realized. He wanted to be closer, and borrowing clothes felt more intimate without the actual intimacy that he feared yet craved.
Simon took an older looking shirt. One without the tags. Something sleeveless that he could fit in much easier. As much of a different in their size as there was, it didn't feel constricting.
He felt like he could breathe.
And maybe it was silly. Stealing his boyfriend's clothes while he's off in the gym.. but Johnny did it back, so maybe it wasn't all that strange.
The shirt stretched a little, framing his muscles and the little bit of pudge on his belly. It fit just right to him, even if it really didn't.
It was comforting.
He'd have to steal his clothes more often. The appeal was certainly there.
