ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.

That’s…wild. What was I talking about?

maybe this is a fundamental difference in moral views because i think oppression isn't bad because it harms certain groups, it's bad because it harms people. it DOES harm specific groups, and that's a necessary part of understanding it, but the mistreatment is the problem, not the fact that that mistreatment is unfairly distributed

anime gets a lot of mileage out of the fact that Japan is super green and super compact, lots of tiny rice paddies and tiny mountains and tiny forests and tiny rivers allowing plucky tweens to wander off and find adventure within minutes.

was learning about the history of a racial slur used by US soldiers against enemy combatants first in the Philippines and then in Korea and then in Vietnam and I had a moment where I was like "wait that doesn't make any sense, those are three wildly different ethnicities" before realizing I was doing this tweet unironically

good addendum to sturgeon's law. easier to gain general but not perfect consensus on what's shit, but the 1% to 10% that's good certainly does vary a lot from person to person

ykno the thing about poetry is that 99% of it is bullshit and the other 1% will cut you like a material knife, and for every person that 1% is a different section of the whole. this is probably true about all art.
