ND's conflict with Kay during the DLC must have been so... strange to him.
Like, I can imagine him being upset and hurt by her disregarding his advice and siding with Hondo rather than him, while at the same time wondering if he's supposed to be upset. Allowed to be upset?
Living the life he has, I'm sure that he's disagreed with his previous owners. Multiple times. Just Jaylen alone, I'm sure he disagreed with on multiple things. But in those instances, he was an owned droid, and so it wasn't really a personal matter, when his opinions and advice were rejected. He was just a droid, and they were the organic masters. That's just how things were supposed to be.
But now, with Kay, the relationship is different. The relationship is actually present and emotional, so now when his concerns are downplayed, I expect it feels... well, it feels like something. Something unpleasant. While at the same time having making him wonder if he has the "right" to feel upset. Or if this is just another instance of an organic owner exerting authority over their droid, and he misunderstood where he stood with Kay.
I imagine, when Kay genuinely apologizes to him once all is said and done, it's a shock. Because no one has ever taken his his advice and his feelings into real account before. But it also let's him know where he stands with her - in a good way - so I imagine it was a relief, too.
