2022 review

A little late but there it is! The 2022 review. The year was full with conventions, very little fanmail returns (not because lack of trying though) Lots of new shows discovered. But lets start with the conventions. What a thrill it was. After the Covid lockdowns 2022 was finally convention year! 2022 was my convention record.

CONVENTIONS

Dutch Comic Con Spring Meeting Colin O'Donoghue again was absolutely amazing after so many years! This time in my own country and not Paris.

German Comic Con Spring This may or may not be my favorite of the year. Its a hard pick between this 1 and the Winter edition. The Vikings cast is always the best and the sweetest. They are all just so, so nice! Also an amazing opportunity for me to meet some of The Witcher cast and Alyssa Milano (who was my teenage idol)

Magic Con The most disappointing con of the year. I was suppose to meet Miranda Otto and Aidan Turner (long time con dreams/wishes of mine) but both cancelled. But I had a lot of fun with friends and I got to meet some of The Rings of Powers cast.

German Vikings Con What a blast! The sweetest cast of all time together at 1 convention and meeting George Blagden after being on my wishlist for such a long time wow!

Dutch Comic Con Winter Only met Stephen Amell and Jenna Coleman at this convention. Stephen Amell was awesome. Did a sweet hug photo and his panel was fun. Jenna was nice and seemed more relaxed then at other cons.

German Comic Con Winter Again the Vikings making my convention for me. Especially Clive Standen en Jordan Patrick Smith.. they are so, so lovely! Leo Suter from Vikings: Valhalla was pretty amazing as well and since Vikings: Valhalla is my current obsession show it was again an amazing opportunity.

These are just the actors I named but I had so many great meetings in 2022. In 2023 I sadly can’t do as many cons as I would like to.

FANMAIL

2022 was a disaster year for fanmail. The worst of all time. But I got a few nice returns: Henry Cavill (pre-signed The Witcher photo), Carrie Coon, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Xander Berkeley, Leo Suter, Charlie Vickers and Taylor Hickson.

BEST TV OF 2022

• The Rings of Power, sorry for all the haters out there. No it wasn’t even close to the master of piece of The Lord of The Rings. But I really loved the show and for sure much better then The Hobbit. • Vikings: Valhalla, I’m kinda obsessed with this show. I love the cast, the music, the story.. just everything about it. • The Handmaids Tale Season 5, I love every season of the show. It just always amazed me. The acting, the story. • 1899, Kinda sad it got cancelled. It had me intrigued for sure. Bummer that I will never know the end of it. • The Sandman, love this weird, dark fantasy show. Very happy it’s renewed.

Goodbye 2021, lets see what 2022 will bring!

Wow I think I can speak for everyone when I say it’s been a rough 2 years. Last year I was so hopeful when started 2021 and well we all know how that turned out. Hopes for 2022 are well.. zero to none, lets see how it goes 1 day at the time. Sorry I can’t say Happy New Year anymore, but still wish everyone the best. Anyway despite the disappointments at least I can say that 2021 also brought me beautiful things (so fur sure an improvement with 2020.. for that year I have nothing to good to say)

Lets start with my new job! The work itself can be very challenging. But I really got some nice co-workers and I feel for the time being I’m at right place work wise. I got to see more of my family and friends. Not as much as I would liked but again improvement.

I sent out lot of fanmail letters. Despite only 25% coming back. I got sweet replies from Torrey Devitto, Mark McKinney, Caroline Ford, Molly Quinn, David Boreanaz, Rachel Brosnahan, Robert Sheenan, Eric Winter, Alexandra Breckenridge, Robbie Amell, Ben Lawson, Emily Deschanel, Rebecca Ferguson and Colm Feore

German Comic Con Dortmund. Despite the stress and fear of everyday the even may or may not get cancelled. It did happen! And It was everything I hoped for! Meeting the Vikings cast was for sure the highlight (+ Ian Harding) Also got to cross off someone from my “most want to meet list” Clive Standen.

german comic con dortmund winter, 2021 review

Meeting: Travis Fimmel, Clive Standen, Alexander Ludwig, Gustaf Skarsgård, Ivana Baquero, Ian Harding, Misha Collins, Chandler Riggs, Sasha Pieterse and DJ Qualls

Well German Comic Con Dortmund finally happened this year in December. Up until the very last day this convention almost got canceled because of Covid. But it didn’t and it finally happened. My first convention in almost 2 years

Meeting the Vikings actors was for sure the high light of this convention. They were all so sweet! During the autographs Clive Standen and I talked about The Netherlands. Travis Fimmel was really friendly as well kept choosing the best markers for everyone's photos. He told me he hoped I had a good time at the convention. Gustaf Skarsgård somehow really liked it that I also knew his work from Westworld. Alexander Ludwig was a bit more shy and the meet went quick, but friendly for sure.

As for the photo ops I asked Clive Standen for a hug photo and told him only if he was comfortable with it. He jumped away from me then laughed and then took me really close for the hug ♥ Travis Fimmel also give me a big hug, called me sweetheart and padded me on the back ♥ I saw Clive and Travis both doing all sorts of poses with fans. But I really wanted to make sure they were comfortable doing the hugs poses because.. you know Covid. With Gustaf Skarsgård we were told beforehand “no touching/social distance policy” but I was totally okay with that (they need to feel comfy) and the photo turned out great because he was still standing close to me (unlike some actors that weekend who had their fans stand huge amount away from them) Alexander Ludwig was friendly as well put an arm around me.

The other photo ops worked out well for the most part. Ian Harding was lovely gave me a big hug and remembered me from 2 years ago ☺️ Something went wrong with printing my photo and they lost the photo. So I had to re-shoot, when I came back Ian said "Ohh no did I mess up your photo?"  LOL. Chandler Riggs and DJ Qualls were also normal photo ops.  Ivana Baquero and Sasha Pieterse were like Gustaf Skarsgård “No touching/social distance policy” With Ivana Baquero that turned out okay, just my photo with Sasha Pieterse was strange. I had to sit on a chair and she was standing up. I guess it was her way of really keeping that social distance. I appreciate the thought of making something out of it and not make me stand across the room. But the photo just turned out really weird. But ohh well you can’t like all your photos.

As for the other autographs meetings. My autograph meeting with DJ Qualls was really something special. They didn't have pictures from "The Man In The High Castle"  And he walked with me to the merchandising stand to look for them and asked for me. So nice. Also had a long talk with him about "The Man in The High Castle" Thankfully I had a small photo with me from the show and he signed it ☺ "Nicole you are sweet, thanks for the kind words"I asked Misha Collins for a gold/silver marker (he wanted to sign this photo with a blue 1) When I asked he said "NO!" so I was little shocked. But he said he was just joking LOL and then signed with silver. Sasha Pieterse thought she recognized me from other conventions, LOL but I never met her before. But she was a darling. Chandler Riggs was such a sweet kid. I will keep saying it..Carl and Rick were the heart of The Walking Dead and that is exactly what I told him.

I realized how lucky I was with the guests I met that weekend. I saw actors making their fans stand far away for the photo ops. Or demanding their plexi glass even though this convention was suppose to be without plexi. Don’t get me wrong I get these are scary times but I don’t think it’s fair making your fans pay that much money for these type of photos. Just postpone your appearance then (sorry that is just my personal opinion on that) Sarah Wayne Callies for example cancelled for this reason and I totally respect her for it. I’m also totally okay with the no touching policy (which btw should always be thing if actors aren’t comfy with it) But the other examples, sorry that’s a big no for me. But like I said thankfully not my guests :) (with exception of Misha Collins but I didn’t buy a photo op with him for this reason)

I also had a huge amount of respect for German Comic Con / Cool Conventions that weekend. Everything run smoothly unlike 2 years ago so much better. Photo ops were rushed and turned out good. I can’t imagine how stressful this must have been for them with the fear of constant last minute cancellations from guests and even the fear of the entire event cancelled. The convention itself was 2G event which meant only vaccinated or recovered people were allow to attend and we had to wear masks all day. Only before the photo ops we could take them off for few sec.

I hope to be back in April and that they will add on Vikings area. However with Covid just can’t hope/look forward to anything anymore. Update August, 2021

Well finally an update here. This blog was pretty much dead for awhile. I was busy and most of all just not in the mood to update. I haven’t even done my “Best TV-shows of 2020” list like I did other years. And now it’s already August 2021 LOL will probably do it by the end of the year for both 2020/2021. (Sure thing The Umbrella Academy, Shadow & Bone, Haunting of Bly Manor)

Anyway still no conventions adventures for me in 2021, really keep my fingers crossed that I can go to Comic Con Brussels, Dutch Comic Con and German Comic Con Dortmund later this year. I got both of my vaccines but with Covid you just don’t know what will happen next, so I’m just going to wait and see.

As for fanmail letters, in 2020 only 10% of letters came back and 90% failed. I mean wow, this hobby getting more and more difficult but this is a record. Carnival Row cast worst result, nobody replied to me :( At the beginning it seemed 2021 was going to same route but now I got some really amazing autographs from James Purefoy, Robert Sheehan, Torrey DeVitto, Colm Feore, Mark McKinney and Rachel Brosnahan. I’m so happy I can add these amazing actors to my collection you have no idea! You can find the scans in the actors/actresses list.

Obviously happy which each and one of them. Always so grateful to actors who reply to their fanmail it makes me smile so big in these sad times. I have to say though James Purefoy and Colm Feore were very special because of their sweet notes. Mark McKinney reply was outstanding hilarious because of his note (sorry bit private so no note scan) And Rachel Brosnahan.. I’m still not over that one. I mean I don’t have to explain to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fans what it means when Rachel Brosnahan of all people writes down for you “Nicole, Tits up.. to you Marvelous lady”

Little late with updating this. But after a year+ of absolute no autograph returns through mail. I finally heard back from someone in September. Not just someone.. it's the amazing Tony Shalhoub! He is perfect in the show in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Abe Weissman so I'm thrilled and so happy about it. As for rest. It still stays very still quiet. I sent out a lot of letters over the past few months, much more than I had first planned. But the mailbox stays empty (for now) Hope that will change. But a huge cheer for this one!
