This was supposed to be a silly post, but honestly...

Inevitability goes both ways. You're going to die, but only when you're meant to.

That got to me.

My dad died today. We knew it was coming. But I was begging the gods that it wouldn't. He'd already made it two months longer than he should have.

In 1994, the Muppets made one of their most bizarre films to date.

An adaptation of Goncharov, a cult classic that languished in obscurity until the 2020s. While the film was referred to internally and in public reviews of the film as "The Muppets of Naples", the actual marketing of the movie instead titled it after its main lead: "Gonzorov". This was one of many enigmatic choices made by the production crew, and has never been elaborated on by the cast or crew. The film was a gigantic flop for multiple reasons, but most agree that the source of the troubles stems from the nature of Goncharov as a tragedy and a generally depressing movie to watch.

Reportedly, conflicts among the writing staff began almost immediately due to being unable to decide on which cut of Goncharov to base the film on. Eventually, however, director Brian Henson put his foot down and forced the writers to adapt the Ambrosini Cut. Generally agreed to be a less depressing movie than the Morelli Cut, it was expected that "Gonzorov" should have been a much more entertaining and narratively adept movie than it was. As the Muppets proved just two years later in "Muppet Treasure Island", they are very capable of handling otherwise dramatic material with aplomb. This leaves the question of why this movie was such a flop.

To quote Kermit the Frog during the interviews after the cinema debut, the movie was allegedly emotionally draining for the crew to adapt. "You know, we have a script. Mostly. But we do a lot of improv too. I'd wager it's about 60% script, 40% improv on a good day of filming. But, uh… We just weren't feeling it with this one, you know? We watched the original, and… Boy, it's really sad. Goncharov's just kind of a lonely guy trying to make himself a life. And it's not a good life, but it's his to own, and it ultimately kinda falls apart. Gonzo tried to make the role his own, but I think we all realised that we couldn't really make a joke out of the movie in the way that we wanted to."

The Muppets were skillful enough to change the genre to an absurdist tragicomedy, a film where the tragic and meaningless cycle of violence is paradoxically played for laughter. However, despite this, the film is well-known for its bizarrely melancholy air and almost hopeless atmosphere. Everybody seems thoroughly certain that their improv will have little to no impact on the film as a whole, creating a strange and compelling meta-narrative where not even the actors themselves can escape the almost gravitational pull of the ticking clock. Their characters will die, and any attempts to joke their way out of it comes off as desperate, almost deluded in a sense.

The original Goncharov held a deep fascination with inevitability. Clocks are the primary theme, though it appears in other forms. It is this same inevitability that strangles the Muppets, their impressive comedic skills held captive by their own belief that the narrative is inescapable.

Of particular note is the bridge scene, wherein Gonzorov and Katya (played by the dazzling Miss Piggy) discuss the slow collapse of the Italian mafia. The original Goncharov scene had Goncharov desperately trying to hold things together, even as they slipped through his fingers, but here… Gonzorov realises that it's pointless. He can't fix it, but at the same time he can't let it go. He begs Katya to shoot him. Cut to the chase. She's going to shoot him anyway, that's how the movie ends, right? Might as well go out on his own terms. But this horrifies Katya, and she throws her gun away, accidentally saving Gonzorov in the process.

This adds a new layer to the themes of inevitability that Goncharov is wrapped up in, and it's this: Inevitability goes both ways. You're going to die, but only when you're meant to. You don't get lucky. You don't have accidents. Inevitability is a ticking clock, but that countdown is a safety net. As long as you can still hear that clock ticking down, it means you've stitll got time to burn. When a bomb is counting down, just five minutes until it detonates, you do everything you can to buy yourself more time on the clock. Even if all your effort only gains you an extra second, that's what you have to do, right? A single second is worth the blood of innocent men.

But again, inevitability. That second you earned cost you minutes, cost hours days weeks months years. The clock WILL run out.

The Gemini Implications

I was bored tonight. So I got to thinking... what if The Gemini was a proper DLC? Or Shiho had been made a proper confidant to begin with. You know, those things. Well, what goes along with all the confidants? New Personas.

So I made some.

They don't look quite like Personas from the game, but I'm limited by the fact I can't draw and my editing skills are subpar. The vibe for Personas of the Gemini arcana is twins/star-crossed lovers/two sides of the same coin.

Viewed above are Artemis & Apollo who represent the sun and moon in pop culture and are twins, Helen of Troy who is a twin in her own right is in fact two sides of a coin (victim, prize, hostage, catalyst), Sam & Eric from Lord of the Flies who are so indistinguishable from each other they are both just called "Samneric" but while they don't do terrible things they don't stop them either, and Castor & Pollux who are the literally the gemini constellation. (I have yet to find much information on the Chinese myth)

Other things I was thinking of:

Ashvins - Nasatya and Dasra, are the twin horsemen Hindu gods who symbolize sunrise and sunset, and are considered the gods of medicine and healing. They seem to be depicted with horseheads a lot. Double horse head personas?

Twelfth - Would be a nod to Viola and Sebastian from Willy Shake's Twelfth Night. Not sure what this would be. Because of this, there'd be no Romero & Juliet.

Two personas, Pride and Prejudice, referencing the Jane Austen book. Obviously. Would give vibes of the personas of the three Fates from Greek mythology seen of the fortune arcana in how they look like they should connect.

Anyway, that's all that I've got. My research wasn't sending me down as much of a rabbit hole as I'd hoped and I was just getting newer stories and media that did not interest me in the slightest to use or reference.

Oh, before I go: if Shiho were a Phantom Thief, it would add in a new magic type: Venom! Ven (small), Vendyne (small all), Veneno (medium), Venenum (high)

One of my old favorite books to read as a kid were these two titled "Rejected Princesses" which were the stories of woman both mythical and real that would never, ever be considered as Disney princesses.

There's a website I frequent. SO many good stories.

And so, SO many of the women would make GREAT personas in the Persona 5 theming. Like, I don't really know anything about the other entries in the series, but P5, they're all rebels.

Rejected Princesses are PERFECT.

Not so good for my Persona 6 concept, however. I think the only one I plucked out of it was Agonice.

Hey all, bringing this back! Not because the book is available or anything. In fact, for the opposite.

Who used to be my co-author has pulled a bitch move and removed all my access to the documents regarding the book that were technically created by her after cutting me out of her life. This included the main document we were writing in that had the full story, not just bits and pieces. I have a previous version somewhere, before a bunch of editing had been done, but we'd had outlines made of the sequel and the prequel.

Having said that, if she ever uses any of these pictures, she can't. I'm the one who bought them, I paid for the ability to print them in the book. The character designs as well. If she wants to reuse her characters from the book, fine, as is her right, but again, these are not her designs, not her pictures.

I intend to take my own characters and remold the story without hers. Maybe just focus on the events that would have been the prequel. Not sure yet.

So, I wrote a book

I wrote a book with @raina-divine-blog​ and I commissioned some art, all of which was made by the lovely @ichigomaniac​. And I thought I’d share it with you!

I’ve worked for many years at Scotland Yard. In that time, I’ve never been fond of the multitude of murders that come across my desk.

She’s as mad as a bat. I cannot help but think, with what I know of her now, that she is the reason for Violet Allen’s death.

The frown on her face deepened into one of sorrow. She walked slowly to the center of the room, cold air passing by me as she moved away.

Often times, I feel as if I am in another world. Much has changed in the last few months… Yes, but I suppose I should be rather used to that by now, shouldn’t I?

I tilted my head, “So what are you going to do?” “What can I do?” She said throwing her hands in the air 

A fortnight ago, Miss Frost awoke from screams. She was delirious, with a fever to match.

Miss Frost, Nanny would not stop badgering me until I wrote this down, but she too sends you her love. Mr. Spencer also sends his well wishes that you return to good health quickly. As, of course, do I.

I only became aware that the entire ballroom’s focus was on us when we finished and they applauded. I was only aware the rest of the band had joined as well because the final notes were fading away.

I don’t want to hurt you, but by the time you have read this, I will have been long gone from your home. Since the beginning, I knew I would leave.

She raised my arms towards the witch, and the shack shook. Glass bottles fell from shelves and crashed to the floor, turning the fire vibrant, twisted colors.

She broke away, and when I reached out for her again, my hand went right through her. She smiled as the sunlight rose above the trees, blinding me. “We will meet again, I am sure of it.”

Then, I ripped the letter in two and I ripped it again, until it was in several pieces and floating on the breeze to be carried off into the wind.

As Alender hands us our rings, as we proclaimed our vows, as we were pronounced married by the priest and my lips touched hers. There was nothing but us in the world.
