Welcome back to our favorite event! The Zine of Elements continues onto its next stage, Applications! From now until December 14th at 6:00 pm EST, anyone is welcome to apply to participate in the zine.

You are welcome to apply as both an artist and a writer, but depending on the amount of interest, you may only be accepted as one or the other.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Zine of Elements! This fanzine project is centered around celebrating the LEGO Ninjago TV series’ various lesser-appreciated elemental masters through fanfiction and fanart. Applications for the project will open in three weeks (Nov. 24, 2024) so follow this blog and read on for more information!

What is the Zine of Elements?

The Zine of Elements (ZoE) is a free, digital SFW fanzine hosted by @21st-century-ninja (Fabro) and @curiositythecryptid (Lis). Over the course of three months, 25 artists and 6 writers will work together to bring the background elemental masters to life!

The ZoE is a canon-focused zine, which means that contributors will be asked to create works that fall beneath the canon umbrella (see the Zine Doc for more details). While the ninja are allowed to be background characters in any works created, they cannot be the subject matter, as this is a zine dedicated to the lesser-seen elemental masters.

Who can apply?

Anyone, regardless of age or skill, is welcome to apply for the ZoE. You must be able to use Discord to communicate, and you must be able to speak either English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

What does the schedule look like?

Applications: Nov 24, 2024 to Dec 14, 2024 Application results: by Dec 28, 2024 Creation period: Dec 28, 2024 to March 22, 2025 (12 weeks) Pitches due: Jan 11, 2025 Check in 1: Feb 1, 2025 Final dropout date: March 1, 2025 Check in 2: March 1, 2025 Due date: March 22, 2025 Zine publishing date: Mid April 2025, TBD

I'm excited to apply! How do I do that?

In just three weeks, writer and artist applications will open via Google Form! In the meantime, though, you can be prepping your portfolios. Artists will be required to provide at least three pieces, at least one of them that must be Ninjago-focused, and writers will be required to provide three writing samples, at least one of which must be Ninjago-focused and under 2,000 words.

Prompting opens!

Woohoo! We've made it to the first stage of fic fest: prompting period! If you have an ao3 account, you can now officially head over to the prompting page to share your ideas with the world!

Don’t have an ao3? You can also submit prompts through this google form (only use this option if you don't have an ao3 account.) Prompting will run from April 6th to April 27th.

Remember:

Prompts must be SFW

Prompts can be about any aspect of ninjago, including but not limited to seasons 1-16, DR, books, comics, or the movie!

If you do submit a prompt about dragons rising, please write DR SPOILERS at the top of your prompt

Want to participate in the event but writing for your own idea and not someone else’s? There will be an option for self-prompting when claiming opens.

In celebration of prompting opening, there's also a silly little gif prompting game over here! Screenshot and share your results and what ideas might spawn from them.

Don't know how to prompt? The forms, both of them, are pretty self-explanatory, but if you want a more detailed breakdown, click that read more.

To prompt, you're going to start by going to the ao3 collection. Here you can see the prompts already submitted! Along the navigation bar at the top of the collection, you should see a tab titled "Prompt Form." Click on that, and you'll be greeted with a form with several boxes.

The first boxes are fairly self-explanatory. You're allowed to list up to three fandoms (crossovers allowed as long as the content abides by the fest rules!), three characters, three relationships, and the additional tags.

Next comes the place for your actual prompt! Fill this box in with the actual fic idea you have (remember that authors do not need to match pitch-for-pitch every single thing you put here, and putting in too many details may limit who wants to pick it up).

Also put in your wants (things you want to see in the fic) and do not wants (things you absolutely do not want to see).

Finally, you'll be given the option to make your prompt anonymous or not! The reason it's listed as "semi-anonymous" is because while the prompt itself won't have your name on it, your name will show up in the list of people who've submitted prompts.

And that's it! Here's what the final prompt looks like:

Welcome to Ninjago Fic Fest!

What's a fic fest?

A fic fest is an event not unlike a secret santa in which fic writers create a story based on someone else’s prompt. The twist here is that instead of some mod assigning you a recipient, you get to choose the prompt that you write! Prompts are submitted by the community (writers and non-writers alike) on ao3, and over a period of two months writers will create a fic based one of those prompts.

How do I participate?

There are two ways to participate in the fest: prompting and claiming/writing. No sign up is required for prompting, and you can decide at any time within that two-month period whether or not you're going to write. You can participate in just prompting, just claiming/writing, or both!

Prompts can be submitted by anyone, not just writers.

Prompting guidelines:

no NSFW prompts

please specify any Wants or Do Not Wants

please leave room for writer creativity in your prompts

prompts may be deleted at mod discretion

Prompting will run from April 6th to April 27th.

After prompting closes, writers will be able to claim prompts on a first come/first serve basis using the claiming form. You must have an ao3 account to participate in claiming/writing.

Claiming/writing guidelines:

no NSFW submissions

submissions must be a minimum of 500 words

submissions must be mindful of their prompt's Wants and Do Not Wants (though you don't have to follow every Want to a T)

chaptered works are allowed as long as the submitted portion equals or exceeds the minimum word count

What happens once all fics are submitted?

Once all the fics are submitted to the ao3 collection, they will be revealed anonymously. After a short period, authors will then be revealed.

What if I need to drop out?

It's super easy to drop out of the event! Since you're not assigned a recipient, there's no one you're letting down by dropping out since there's no guarantee that any prompt will get filled; most won't, in fact, just by the nature of the event. The dropout form is there for this purpose.

Actual prompting for the fest will open in one week, on April 6th! In the meantime, follow this blog to stay up-to-date on the happenings. More detailed instructions/information will come as we reach each stage of the event, but if you have any questions, the ask box is always open.

Is ninbingo happening this year?

Thanks so much for your interest! Unfortunately though, I'm not going to have the time this year to host ninbingo again 😭 The boards from the previous years are all still available if anyone wants to challenge themselves again, but I won't be making new boards, hosting games, reblogging creations, and the like this time.

If someone wanted to take over running ninbingo this year I would potentially be open to that though! Feel free to message me if you're interested in taking it up.

While I'm not doing ninbingo this year, I am planning on hosting a ninjago fic rec week sometime this summer (probably on @21st-century-ninja, potentially on a new blog if it seems like there's a lot of interest)! Details to still be worked out but I'll probably post some polls in the near future :D

Welcome, everyone, to the final recap of Ninbingo Round Two!  It’s been awesome having you all this year, and I hope you’ve all had a good time :D

There may or may not be another ninbingo next year; I’m planning on maybe hosting a different event in the first half and so I might be event-ed out :D  However, if you enjoyed (or not! all feedback is good feedback!) would you consider dropping your thoughts either in the askbox or this form?  It would really be appreciated.

i’m not really sure what you mean by sheet, but here’s a link to the boards for this round!  We’re wrapping up the “official” timeframe for the bingo in a couple days on the 30th, but you’re more than welcome to use them for a personal challenge!

I had obviously plans for the prompts "hugs" and "reveal", too, but that multi-chapter fic didn't get beyond the outline stage before life got in the way ... So I'm closing this board unfinished, but I've at least posted my oneshot The Candlestick an the Electric Bat to AO3. I'm using creator's choice to insert a prompt from the verve board, Laughter (hope I did that right). Thanks to @ninjago-bingo for organising Ninbingo - it was fun and inspiring and exciting even though I didn't have as much time and energy for writing as I thought!

There’s probably a principle or something to it.  Now that Kai has Lloyd Garmadon on his mind, he can’t help but see him everywhere: in the back of his classes, against the hallway walls, in the shadows of the school.

And he’s not even doing anything out of the ordinary!  He’s still doing his normal routines, his normal routes; nothing has changed but he’s suddenly realizing just how easily Lloyd Garmadon fades into the background of everything.
