☠ (remus)
a threatening message owl - @lvpinremvs
Mr. Lupin,
I hope this owl finds you well. Please be aware this letter is a courtesy from myself to you. Although I am sure your intentions on the afternoon of the 14th of February were in line with the spirit of the Feast of Saint Valentine, I wish to offer a polite suggestion. Your helpful need to insert yourself into other people’s transactions is quite presumptuous. I am thankful that everything you did was kind in nature, or so I assume, and that you acknowledge the traditions of Saint Valentine and not the sacrifices of Lupercalia (which is said to be the origins of what we celebrate today). However, good intentions do not excuse any attempts for unwelcome and unsanctioned magic to be performed on any objects that are not yours. One might think you were up to something nefarious. I have not informed the aurors of your actions as I do believe it was purely ignorance on your part on how people interact with others when out and about or, perhaps, the excitement of the holiday led you away from yourself. I will inform them the next time you decide your special touch is needed on objects of mine. I hope you have a pleasant rest of your week and that you enjoyed the rest of your holiday. Should you find anything confusing in the words I have written or should you have questions, fear not. My dear cousin may be able to translate it for you and answer anything you do not comprehend. Sincerely,
N. Malfoy

Sirius felt like he was holding his breath the entire time she contemplated him. What? Like he was about to give her a cursed teddy bear or something? Even if he were the type to pull such a stunt, it would require the sort of forethought he simply didn’t possess - plus, how was he supposed to know she would be at a place like this? Still, Draco was his nephew, or….. something, and if all he could give the boy was a simple teddy bear - well, he wanted to. But apparently that wasn’t up to him.
He watched her leave, dropping his head and heaving an exceptionally heavy sigh, but then he was running to catch up, pushing his way through the crowd to follow her before he’d even realized what he was doing. Why? He didn’t know, and it didn’t matter - it was almost like an instinct, he had to see it through. “Narcissa!” He called, once they were a decent distance from the shop. “Come on!” Sirius howled in frustration, tightening his grip on the bag still in his hand and pausing his steps. If she really didn’t want to talk to him still, he wasn’t about to follow her through every back alley and street of Hogsmeade. He’d let her go, if he had to.
Tumblr media
She had quickened her steps through the crowd, turning off into a side street and ending up on the road to the Shrieking Shack before she realized. And still, Sirius was following her. That man did not have a single clue. “What?!” She snapped, turning around quickly. All polite behavior gone now that they were alone and he felt the need to shout as it seemed all members of the Black family had a tendency to do. It had to be their bloodline that brought emotion out in her. Only family could make her this cross. “What do you want? Was your friend trying to jinx one of the bears earlier in the day not enough?”
Narcissa only looked away to make sure her raised tone hadn’t unsettled Draco which. of course, it had. She brought her son to her chest, rocking him as she stared back a Sirius with a look that clearly implied Draco’s crying was his doing. “I have truly had enough of your fan club’s need to ruin my day and I would appreciate it if you did not encourage them to do so anymore.”

As he got a better look at the woman, he realized who it was. Sirius’ cousin. No wonder his gut told him to keep an eye on her. Although he had never had the pleasure of formally meeting her in the past, Remus knew all about his family and what they stood for. He tried his best to keep a smile on his lips, though, there was no use in making things any worse than they already were. When she had looked past him and spoke only to the other man, he couldn’t help but to feel slightly annoyed by it, but he wasn’t offended by it. After all, he didn’t work here, and he could understand why she wouldn’t want his assistance.
“No, I don’t work here.” Remus admitted, still smiling. “But I couldn’t help but to notice the little one with you, and I figured I’d offer. Anything to make a child happy.” It was true, he really loved kids and would to anything to make one smile. Even if he did think the bears were rather cute the way they were, he could see how they could be frightening to a child of his age. “I wouldn’t consider myself unqualified, but I can almost promise you the owner isn’t going to be much help. They can make more money off the charmed bears, I can’t see them offering to remove it for you.”
Tumblr media
When he confirmed the obvious, she held back the overwhelming urge to roll her eyes. She was aware he didn’t work here. She assumed like the rest of her cousin’s layabout friends he was a jobless simpleton that enjoyed sticking his nose in situations where it very much wasn’t needed. Holding her son a little closer to her, Narcissa took a step back. “I believe I said it was not necessary.” Face tight and shoulders drawn back, she stared at the man and waited for him to move along. When he didn’t and continued to give advice, Narcissa did finally roll her eyes. It wasn’t satisfying, giving into an outlet of frustration in public but Sirius’ friend seemed ignorant to normal social cues.
“My issue is not whether or not you view yourself as unqualified, though you citing yourself as a source does not inspire a great deal of confidence. I do not know you and you are offering to perform a spell on an object I intend to give to my child. Do you really believe that I am that naive?” Putting her other hand on the back of Draco’s head, she leveled her gaze with the stranger. “They will be removing it for me but thank you so much for your unsolicited opinion.” Money would not be an issue.

Despite their many years of trying, Lucius had found himself conflicted about becoming a father. He knew that he needed to continue the Malfoy bloodline. To produce an heir. However, he just wasn’t sure that he’d be any good at being a parent. Draco, however, made it easy. He looked at this child for the first time and fell in love. It made him fall in love with Narcissa more than he thought possible.
He was in trouble. He knew it. Lucius hoped that his plans for the evening would rectify the situation. Lucius remained at her level, politely brushing his lips against his wife’s and not taking it farther because they were in public. That didn’t mean he didn’t want to. Meeting her gaze, Lucius resisted the urge to pull her closer with the way that she was looking at him. “Daddy had one drink. I don’t think that’s a crime, is it?” He poked his sons nose and Draco giggled in his arms. Wrapping an arm around Narcissa’s waist, Lucius murmured lowly, “Shall we go? We have plans.”
Tumblr media
Narcissa tilted her head, considering his words and ignoring the urge to temper down her poor mood at the sound of Draco's laughter. Lucius knew exactly what he was doing by being sweet, bringing Draco on his side, and she didn’t like it. "Perhaps it should be." They could continue this in private.
Knowing nothing of their plans, she nodded. “I don’t care to be here any longer.” She didn’t need to know yet. She’d allow herself to be surprised as she had in past years and he’d never disappointed so far. Once again finding her place at his side as they left the shop. All her purchases from the day, the few she had demeaned worthy enough to return to their home, had been delivered by owl. Leaving her free to grip his fingers on the edge of too tight. She was feeling conflicted, like a cauldron about to boil over until Lucius had shown up. Her head filled with thoughts of her sister that Dorcas and her confusion at speaking to Sirius had quieted at her husbands need to goad her. He was winning.

severusxtobias:
“One of the many shortcomings of Albus Dumbledore, no doubt.” He agreed, knowing full well that he was probably not the best fit for the job, even if Narcissa didn’t say it outright. The offer had both surprised him and not - he had the expertise, no doubt, to help the students excel in a way others would be unable to achieve; but he had a reasonable handicap when it came to actually having to interact with them. Still, the Headmaster had made his choice, and so had Severus. Although currently, since it had led him here, he was regretting it. “Sorry to disappoint, but I doubt he’d believe me any more than you seem to.” His lip twitched upward, although he didn’t smile.
His eyes trailed down to Draco for just a moment, wondering idly if he’d be at the school when the little boy was old enough to attend. Severus frowned at the thought, not sure which option he’d want to be true. “I’ve certainly considered it.” He admitted with a light shrug. There were a number of things he excelled at, but none half as well as potions - not yet, anyway. “But there are better uses of my time for the time being.” He met her gaze, pausing before continuing, sure she might pick up on his meaning. “Or so I’ve been told.” His current employment had been his own choice, but the Dark Lord had approved so highly of having him within the school, he wouldn’t be so stupid as to leave. “It’s not all that much different than the shop, really. I get to brew, and I deal with the stupidity of the general public.” He grunted a laugh, looking at her ruefully. “At least this way I don’t pay rent."
Tumblr media
She hummed in agreement as she brought the sugary cigarette to her lips again. Had Severus mentioned where he had gotten these? They were delightful and entirely childish. She wanted a carton. “If we’re going to flatter you with compliments, you’re an extreme improvement from Slughorn. They’re guaranteed to learn something this year. I’d wager they already have.” For all her light teasing over his new career path, there was a part of Narcissa that was proud for him. She didn’t understand why a man of his age would sequester himself willingly but there was no doubt for his talent in the subject. He deserved the chance to be appreciated for his skill and she hoped the staff would value him appropriately. “If you took a moment to sell it, he might. A minute of your time to rile him up. Surely you could spare that for me. We could practice right now. Go on.”
Narcissa followed her gaze to Draco, love practically leaking from her entire being at the sight of him. He was being so well behaved today. Most likely due to being overwhelmed by commotion of the likes he had never seen. Gaze moving back to Severus at his voice, Narcissa understood the weight of his glance immediately. She had seen it in her own husband’s eyes when he was beckoned away from their home. She wasn’t marked like Lucius or him. There had been no oath taken, officially or otherwise, and there were no meetings to attend but she understood the weight of his words. Tapping some ash from the end of her cigarette, Narcissa nodded in agreement. “Good.” She liked the idea of him out of the fray, tucked away safe while still working towards the cause. Molding young minds instead of risking his life recklessly.
“Free housing? Now it’s all adding up. You only took the position for the benefits.” She couldn’t say that would ever be a thought crossing her mind. All her housing was free. It was then that Narcissa connected the dots. She laughed, a higher pitched light giggle contrasting with the low tone of his voice. “Are you chaperoning today? Severus. Lurking in alleyways and smoking? That’s just going to endear you to them more. They’ll want to be like you now.”

He hadn’t informed his wife of their plans for the evening. Choosing to keep it a secret instead. This would be the first time that they’d travel overnight since she’d had Draco and he wanted it to be special. However, judging by her posture and the look on her face, Lucius had a lot of groveling to do. He held his son in hopes that it would calm her anger the slightest bit.
“Alright, love. Dobby can go fetch whatever you’d like,” he agreed, knowing that there was nothing else he could do but agree with her. When she pulled on his shirt, Lucius knew what she was doing. Narcissa was subtle. Listening to the way she spoke to their son, Lucius had to bite back another smirk when he leaned down to meet his wife’s gaze as she’d requested. Heels couldn’t make up for their height difference. “Daddy didn’t get up to anything,” he murmured lowly, a lie that he would bet Narcissa would call him out on. When he got her worked up, he just couldn’t stop. “Waited for you two to finish shopping. That’s it.”
Tumblr media
Narcissa was not amused, only temporarily distracted by the angelic appearance of her son. She was quite thankful for both her and Lucius' looks. It took some children years to grow into their own. If her weekly brunches at the Greengrass' had taught her anything, it was that some babies were truly horrid looking.
A smile might have been on her face as she placed a hand on Lucius' cheek in a play of marital bliss but it didn’t betray her true feelings. No doubt her husband was fully aware of it as he continued to push her buttons for his own fun. "That's it?" She asked, placing a gentle kiss on his lips. She pulled away only slightly, the taste of cinnamon on her lips not too much of a surprise, and tilted her chin down to look at her husband through her lashes. It helped soften her features, giving her a much more innocent appearance than she rightfully deserved. Especially when she was wielding so much aggravation. "Daddy didn't fall into a barrel of firewhiskey while waiting for us?" He didn’t reek of the liquor was she tempted to him so out of spite.

The shop was busy, but Alice made sure that she carefully gave Narcissa a wide berth. She really did not want to interact with her. Of course, it made her sad. They had once been so close, and Family was important to her. But she knew where she was was wanted, and who cared about her. She ws still so close to Andromeda, and she knew who truly mattered. Narcissa might think that she was all high and mighty, but she really wasn’t that important to her. So, she passed by her, with a good distance between them. She didn’t want to accidently brush up against her or anything. She was probably a good 6 feet away from her actually.
She didn’t hear Narcissa clear her throat, and to be honest, she was kind of tuning the woman out. She couldn’t care less. She tilted her head as she looked at the dress in front of her. Yep. It was cute. She’d buy it. She picked her size off of the shelf, putting it over one arm, before she moved on, deciding to look at the shirts. Maybe she’d pick a few up for Frank whilst she was here
Tumblr media
She didn’t know what she had expected from Alice. It seemed a simple apology was too difficult to muster. Her cousin had never managed to stick out what their lifestyles entailed. How could she be expected to understand social norms? She had been a Gryffindor and that only been the first step in a long line of failures. Perhaps if the words Dorcas had spat her way weren’t still on her mind she would have considered bringing up the slight to Alice directly but she didn’t make a habit of speaking to former family members.
Pursing her lips, Narcissa directed her attention away from Alice and in the direction of the owner returning with her wrapped purchase. She informed him that the bear could be delivered by owl as the rest of her days purchases had been. She wasn’t the type to walk the shops and carry her things with her. It was tiresome and entirely brag-hearted.
Tumblr media
Of course, just as she was preparing to leave was when Draco started to fuss. He had been remarkably well behaved all day. She wasn’t sure if was the crowd or her own exhaustion rubbing off on her son. The noise level in the store was significantly higher than anything he had heard before with the exception of his own cries. Narcissa did her best to comfort him, rocking him back and and forth as they left the store in search of a quieter place.

dcrxasmeadcwes:
Dorcas almost felt guilty, guilty for letting her tongue slip in front of a child. She was almost there when Narcissa started speaking and all guilt and all feeling melted completely away. This wasn’t about Narcissa and Dorcas, not really, this was about the fire burning all around them. The two very different sides of the war that they fell on and the two very different ways that they had embraced how their upbringing made them. They’d started at base, both women in a powerful family with money and power at their fingertips, and Narcissa had embraced it with open arms, marrying Lucius Malfoy and spitting out his spawn because that was what women in their station did.
Dorcas had rebelled. She’d stepped outside of their small social circle and found people outside of it. She had given up everything because she had stopped believing in the ideals that others had tried to force on her. She was better in her own mind, because she was fighting to protect the people who weren’t offered a chance to protect themselves. Fighting against a man rallying people with more pure blood than he had, starting a war under a banner he had no business under.
Her eyes turned to Draco then, the little bouncing thing, cooing and happy to be there. She should bite her tongue, leave it alone. Unfortunately, Dorcas never had been great at that. “I do hope that the war torn world your son grows up in is worth it. Worth the violence. Worth the destroyed families and broken friendships. Worth the pain. Worth every child that was ripped away from their own parents because they weren’t pure enough. Your son gets to live in excess and lavish, while others are getting murdered. What kind of mother is okay with any child being hurt like that? Perfect you may be, but a perfect mother? You might need to re-read parenting books, find the chapters on empathy.”
Dorcas moved then, took the step that it took to get closer to Narcissa and offering her a toothy smile of her one. “Have a lovely day, Narcissa. Happy Valentines day.” With a pause, she shoved past the woman, mindful of the side the baby was on and going the other way. “And do send Lucius my regards.”
Tumblr media
If Narcissa hadn’t grown up in the house she had, if her father hadn’t raised her with harsh words and a quick wand and her mother with vast amounts of distant and little validation, her face would have fallen. She would have flinched at Dorcas’ harsh words. But there was such a thing as compartmentalization. For years it had been impressed into her that some wixen were worthier than others and she was a shining example of that. She didn’t mix with the lower class or cut her nose off to spite her face. Narcissa stayed where she belonged gladly, safe and comfortable.
What she couldn’t stand for was any attack on her son or on her ability to be a good mother. Dorcas had come from her world. She had met the late Mrs. Black many times in her life. It was utterly clear even by the limited amount of behavior she had witnessed that Narcissa was already a much more hands on parent. How could she not be when a child of her own was all she had been working towards for years?
She bided her time, letting Dorcas rant on and even taking the shove that unbalanced her without a word. It wasn’t until Dorcas was a few feet away that Narcissa deemed that time had passed enough for her to speak. “Dorcas, before you go. Do remind me, what is it you’re doing for all those disadvantaged children? You speak on them with such authority that you must be doing something to help them and not only using them as a prop when you don’t know what to say in a discussion.” Pulling her cloak a little more securely around herself and adjusting Draco in her arms, Narcissa nodded her head in Dorcas’ direction. “Please make sure let me know what parenting books you recommend when you have your first child. Should I expect your owl in this decade or next? Happy Valentine’s Day to you as well and have a lovely birthday. Seeing you today has just been a gift. I do hope it won’t be too long until we see each other again.”
She gave a small wave with her free hand and turned away. Her face shifting back into the blank mask until she could find somewhere on this terrible street to pull herself together.

lvpinremvs:
Remus noticed the woman the moment she entered the shop. She looked horribly out of place - a woman of the upper class surrounded by regular people and school children. It wasn’t his intention to watch her, but he couldn’t help it. There was a vague familiarity about her, but he couldn’t quite put a finger on what it was about her that he felt the need watch her. She was looking at the teddy bears, he had to admit he did find them rather charming, but apparently she did not agree as she addressed the shopkeep with such an unnecessarily rude tone.
Slipping through the crowded room quickly, Remus stood between the woman and the shopkeep, a small smile on his lips. “You know, there’s a very simple counter-spell that can remove the charm.” He said matter-of-factly, unsure if the woman would find the information useful or not. Although she seemed to be the type of person who would rather have things done for her than to do it herself. “I could even do it for you, if you’d like.” He offered, hoping he didn’t escalate the situation further.
Tumblr media
Internally, Narcissa sighed. She recognized the man who had decided to insert himself in the situation. One that she had been successfully handling without a man who thought himself her knight in shining arm. It was one of her cousin’s friends, though his name escaped her. Sirius’ little gang truly blended together. Holding her son just a bit tighter, Narcissa gave the interloper a tight smile before looking past him at the man she had been speaking to.
After hearing that the owner was indeed in, she planned to turn away but then Sirius’ little friend spoke again. “Do you work here?” She inquired, looking him over and not seeing an apron or a name tag. “If not, your assistance isn’t necessary. I don’t make a habit of letting unqualified strangers counter-charm objects I plan on giving my son.”

The way that Lucius wrapped his arm around his wife’s waist was unconscious. They’d been together for so long, it had been born out of habit. With his son reaching for him, Lucius took Draco and placed him on his hip, relieving Narcissa temporarily. He could sense her irritation and he’d have the shop keep’s head if they didn’t give her what she wanted. Meeting her gaze, Lucius merely stared at her, a small smirk on his lips. He loved this side of his wife. Sometimes he pushed her just to see how far she would go.
He could tell that there was something else bothering her and he wondered whom she had managed to run into during their time at the festival. Maybe he shouldn’t have strayed from her side. He was sure to hear about it later. Pressing his fingertips into her back gently, he tried to help ease the tension that he knew was building. Looking back at the shop keep, Lucius rose a brow, “Did either of us stutter? Go on and get what my wife asked for or send out your manager.” The shop keep ran off to try and fulfill Narcissa’s request and Lucius turned to his wife. “Shall we leave after this?”
Tumblr media
Free from the weight of Draco in her arms for the first time all day, Narcissa found herself feeling more lonely than she had in some time. She maintained her posture, wishing for nothing more than to be able to curl against Lucius’ side and forget every occurrence of the day. Until he had the audacity to smirk down at her. Well, that was how their Valentine’s Day was going to go. She should have known. It was their first year not going away. It was bound to be terrible.
Tumblr media
Narcissa watched the worker walk away, before looking up at Lucius, warmth gone as she leveled him with a passive stare. She didn’t praise his swift handling of the issue. “I would prefer to leave now. Pilliwinkle's should have received their new products today. Dobby can go tonight.” Under the guise of smoothing a few wrinkles out of his shirt, she gave his clothing the slightest tug. A sign that he needed to bend down to her level. It had been established early on in their relationship when the idea of whispering in his ear had proven near impossible when they were both standing. When his descent wasn’t instantaneous, Narcissa chose to direct her attention her favorite man present. “Daddy seems to have had all the fun without us, darling. We’ll have to find out just what he got up to.” She ended her words with a small poke of his nose, smile returning at the sight of her son’s happy face. How dare he weaponize their child against her. It was work to stay cross when looking at the picture the two of them made.

Dorcas shouldn’t have been surprised. She remembered what it felt like first hand to be disowned. She knew that the moment that Andromeda had met and fallen in love with someone who was outside of the closed circle of their society that she would be nothing more than a regretful memory in the minds of people like Narcissa. How did people live like that? Abandoning their own family. Pretending they were nothing, never there to begin with. How had Dorcas, in all of her overt pride ever identified with them in the first place?
“I’m sure Bellatrix is keeping herself quite busy. Shoving her nose up the arse of a crazy megalomaniac probably takes quite a lot out of a girl.” Dorcas could almost hear Alastor yelling at her in some nebulous void about not showing her entire hand. But the girl did card tricks for a living, and sometimes showing her entire hand meant the trick worked. “Does it hurt to pretend to be so perfect all the time, Narcissa? Is it exhausting? Keeping a perfect home and perfect image with your perfect husband and perfect child. Everyone around you flatters you and praises you for nothing at all while you lavish in the things handed down to you by a line of succession. You didn’t earn your name or your power. You inherited it. Does that feel good? If so, the pampered princess life truly is the perfect one for you. Because you’re only worth the price of your pretty face.”
Tumblr media
“Please watch your language.” Narcissa retorted immediately. It didn’t matter if it would be months until Draco even uttered a word. She didn’t allow any words like that around him. “There are children present.” It was an event primarily for children. Had Dorcas forgotten that in the wake of her current meltdown? One that seemed utterly focused on chipping away at everything Narcissa held dear. What for? Surely, Dorcas’ life couldn’t be going well if she was loitering around her father’s stand but that was no excuse for the way she was behaving. It was no reason to bring up Andromeda or insult Bellatrix in such a manner. She made note of the words Dorcas used. Her sister’s love for the cause wasn’t subtle but to be so bold as to imply that was curious. It would have been more shocking if the other woman’s mouth had any sort of filter.
“As you’ve seemed to open the door to ill-mannered and insolent conversation, let me be frank with you.” She took a step closer to Dorcas, mouth set stiffly and voice low and dry. “My life may be close to perfect. I won’t argue with you on that. I have a loving husband, a darling son, and there truly isn’t anything else I want for. The foundation is making real change in the lives of those affected by the giant attacks. Twilfitt and Tattings drop whatever it is that they are doing and make custom robes for me at the sound of bell as I walk in their door. It is in no way tiring to pretend to be perfect as there’s no pretending that I do. The only pretending that has occurred today was any attempt at having a courteous interaction with you. If you want to judge me by the height of my cheekbones or the rouge on my cheeks so be it but please do not be so presumptuous to pretend that you still know me or my life. You lost the opportunity to do so a long time ago.” She smiled, teeth showing instead of the tight lipped grin that had been directed Dorcas’ way so far. “It is no fault of mine that I have the perfect husband or the perfect child while you’re standing next to the stall of a man who won’t acknowledge your own kinship. If you wish to ruminate on the opportunities you left behind or the state of existence, kindly choose to not include me in it. I am simply enjoying a day out with my son.”

siriusxorion:
Sirius looked sidelong down the counter at the sound of the voice, recognizing it almost immediately as belonging to his cousin. He hadn’t seen her in quite some time, and to be honest, he wasn’t exactly sure how he felt about it. All the things he’d thought he’d known about Narcissa had seemed to shift with the news of Regulus’ death, and it wasn’t as if he was about to confront his own emotions - especially if they were likely to be complicated. “Don’t bother.” Sirius raised his voice just enough so that it would carry to her. “He’s not in on weekends.” He shrugged slightly as he brought his gaze over to meet hers.
Sirius turned, leaving heavily on the counter as he surveyed her. He was in here more often than he probably should be, but he couldn’t help himself. Being godfather to Harry could very possibly be the only children in his life - another possible truth he pushed to the back of his mind. His eyes drifted down to Draco for a second and he swallowed thickly, glancing into his own bag with a sigh. “Here.” Sirius held it out to her before he could change his mind. “I bought it for Harry, but the charm isn’t working.” He bit the inside of his cheek. “I was gonna return it, but it sounds like it’s exactly what you’re looking for.”
Tumblr media
Narcissa’s eyes shot across the room quicker than she would have liked. It was an automatic response. Hearing Sirius’ low tone and assuming the worst was coming. What would it be this time? A dungbomb? Perhaps some hiccough sweets? She had hoped time would have relaxed her cousin. Upon not seeing anything dangerous in his hands but a gift bag, she came to the conclusion it may have. With a sharp turn of her head, missing that satisfying feeling of her hair whipping around with her, her interaction with the worker continued in somewhat of a colder manner.
Ever aware, Narcissa paused when she saw Sirius begin to approach her as the worker went to check the back again. She stayed still as if that would prevent this lovely family reunion from continuing. It didn’t. Looking down at the shopping bag being directed her way, Narcissa found herself unimpressed. Her gaze slowly titled towards him as one of her eyebrow raised in his direction. Who was Harry? Had he gotten himself his own little family accidentally? Something like that was expected of someone like him. Following in Andromeda’s footsteps as quickly as he could. “I assure you that won’t be necessary.”
There had to be something in the air in the village. All sorts of people speaking to her as if they had never heard of polite indifference while occupying the same space. And, truly, Sirius should know better. One visit to inform him of Regulus’ condition did not make them casual acquaintances. She couldn’t even bother to paste on a smile as she spoke next. “If you’ll excuse me.” Turning on her heel and exiting the shop, Narcissa frustration with the day grew. If he had something to say to her, perhaps he could do so away from the prying eyes of the public.

In his opinion, the event at Hogsmeade was absolutely ridiculous. Valentine’s Day was ridiculous, too, but Lucius took any excuse he could to spoil his wife. Plus he knew how cross she’d be if he didn’t. When she mentioned the event, he assumed that meant that she wanted to go and that was why they were there. He regretted it the moment that they apparated into the alleyway. He’d much rather be spoiling Narcissa in a way that he knew she’d appreciate. After an hour or two, Lucius attempted to find his wife and son in hopes that they’d be ready to leave.
He stepped into Gladrags to find his wife in an argument with the shopkeep. He stayed out of sight, arms crossed across his chest and watched the show with a small smirk of amusement on his lips. His wife certainly knew how to get her way. He had no doubts that she’d get what she wanted. When Draco began squirming, Lucius knew he’d been caught and he moved to his wife’s side, a glare at the shopkeep. “I suggest you give my wife what she wants,” Lucius snapped, before patting his son on the head lovingly.

Her step closer to Lucius’ side was unconscious, born out of years of being together. Narcissa’s annoyance cooled the moment he appeared and switched Draco to her other arm so he could be closer to his father. The man his chubby hands were desperately reaching for. Her left hand now free, Narcissa placed in on her husband’s chest. The diamond on her wedding band sparkling as she looked up at Lucius in appreciation. She didn’t know how long her husband had been observing her but it had been long enough for their son to notice before she did. Was she that distracted over a stuffed animal? They really did need to leave.
Although a polite smile was on her lips, he would have known her well enough to see the tension in her spine. The way her eyes stayed narrowed when observing him. Narcissa was fine to wander the streets of Hogsmeade without her husband, allowing her to stop at every stall and shop that caught her or Draco’s fancy, but she didn’t wish to even begin to hear how he had amused himself for so long. How he had kept himself entertained while she was forced to interact with every member of the wixen world. Her earlier interaction with Dorcas had left her perturbed and that was Lucius’ fault, wasn’t it? For bringing her here. “Thank you, dear.” She said, tone warm and adoring despite her mood.

To be honest Alice really didn’t care too much about her cousin. Whilst they had been close when they had been younger, they’d probably not properly hung out since they were like 13. In Alice’s opinion, there wasn’t much lost. She’d always felt like her mother had wanted to be in Narcissa’s company so that she’d be more like the lady she was supposed to be like. That hadn’t worked. Alice had far preferred to actually be in the company of Sirius and Andromeda. It was no coincidence that they were really the only cousin’s that she did hang out with now. She couldn’t be bothered with Narcissa, and especially not when she didn’t care about her either.
Alice bit her lip, deciding against the particular dress that she was looking at. Maybe the ones on the other side of the counter would look better. She carefully stepped around her cousin. She figured Narcissa wasn’t going to talk to her, and to be honest, Alice could be a petty little shit at times, and she wasn’t going to make the first move either. So, she moved over to the dresses on this side of the counter. Ooh. That dark green one was pretty. She picked it up, inspecting it closely. Hmm. Yes. This was more her style.

Narcissa didn’t have any experience running a business, just running a non-profit, but she assumed timely service was one of the pillars of being successful. If this had been one of her fundraisers and she was made to wait for so incredibly long for appetizers to make their rounds or the auction to begin, she would have fired the person responsible on the spot. This wasn’t her store and she had no desire in asking Lucius to acquire anywhere that sold such tacky products, so, instead of doing something about the wait, Narcissa focused on her son.
It was then that Alice brushed around her, much too close for her comfort. Nearly hitting Draco in the face with whatever you would call the coat that she was wearing. She cleared her throat, her face impassive except for her eyes which held a warning of a bitter cold front. She pointedly glanced down at the baby in her arms, waiting for an apology to be issued.

severusxtobias:
He breathed a sigh of relief as he noticed it was Narcissa and Draco, his shoulders relaxing ever so slightly. “Careful now, I may consider you a friend.” He paused, eyes flicking to the young boy beside her. “But that doesn’t mean I’m above hexing you.” Although there was a small twinge of humor to his words that contradicted the sentiment, as close to teasing as Severus was apt to get.
“Oh, it’s going splendidly.” His expression darkened with his reply. “Can’t think of a single thing I’d rather be doing with my life.” It had been a bigger adjustment than even he had anticipated, and he couldn’t say he was taking to it particularly well. The lessons were no problem - he had plans drawn up well into mid year already, and he knew he could teach - it was the students that were the issue. Ever a man with a short fuse, he found he didn’t have the patience for them. But he wasn’t a quitter, and he would figure it out. Taking the pack out of his pocket, he placed it into her outstretched hand with another disgusted glance down at it. “You can have the whole damn pack if you want it. It smells like strawberries.” He sounded offended at the mere thought. He sighed again, shaking himself.

Narcissa’s mouth dropped open in a play of shock as she brought her free hand to her chest, always finding Severus more enjoyable than the other men her husband associated with as he actually possessed wit. “In front of my child? And they let someone like you teach.” She dropped her hand to receive the cigarettes, easily flipping the carton open and placing one of the pink sticks between her lips. They did smell like strawberries. Sliding the carton into her robes, she then lit the cigarette with the tip of wand and watched the smoke curl up into small hearts. It delighted her and based on the way Draco’s hands reached for it, it delighted her son as well. “Tell me you’ll threaten me again in front of Lucius. He’s been far too bored today. He deserves a bit of excitement.” She wasn’t feeling the least bit slighted by Severus’s words.
A warm smile formed on her lips as the scent of strawberries surrounded her. “A dungeon and a storeroom full of ingredients you could only dream of sounds like the perfect place for you. Give or take a few hundred students.” She blew out smoke before she spoke in a more serious tone. “Are you surviving? There would be no shame in pursing another mastery.” Narcissa knew nothing of the conditions of how Severus had taken the position or why he would even want to. She thought it was an odd choice for the man but it wasn’t her position to inform him of that.

Dorcas could feel her fingernails biting into the palm of her hand. It was grounding as she stood with a demon from a past life and faced something she spent most of her life trying to bury. As far as her father had been concerned, she’d died at 16. Her engagement fell apart, her lifestyle changed, and she had to learn what the real world felt like. “Did we snap?” She was surprised with the level of calm she managed to keep in her voice. Even, careful. There was still a child here. “Or did we wake up?”
It was a common habit that Dorcas had, reaching up to grab the little chain around her neck. She did it now as Narcissa spoke, that sick, twisted feeling in her stomach a reminder that she could have been standing in the woman’s shoes. “I don’t need a lover to spend any day with. I have friends. I have the family that I got to choose.” Narcissa was cold, but Dorcas wasn’t foolish enough to think her heartless. “How’s your sister? She chose a different family, too. Worked out for her, didn’t it?”
Tumblr media
“From what? A dream of a life?” Narcissa wasn’t aware of her privilege in most regards. She knew she was better because of the family she had been born in. It had opened the doors for her in society compared to some of the other families whose names graced the list of sacred twenty-eight. It had even enabled her to be promised to the love of her life. “If waking up is how we are referring to your lifestyle, please allow me to keep sleeping.” She pressed a kiss to the top of Draco’s short blond locks, a genuine smile on her face as she reflected on how lucky she was to have a son at all.
Narcissa didn’t enjoy engaging in anything not flattering in public and her patience with Dorcas was growing thinner by the second. Did the witch think she didn’t have friends or family? Family was the most important thing to her. They were all you could trust and, even then, there were chances they would hurt you. Face growing still, her lips parted for a moment before she took what she hoped was a calming intake of air. “Bellatrix is fine. It’s so sweet of you to ask after her. I would tell her you did but I’m afraid she wouldn’t write to see how you were and I wouldn’t want to get your hopes up.” As far as Narcissa was concerned, Andromeda no longer deserved the title.
