Title: Against All Odds
Summary: The Hunger Games are not meant for love. They are meant to destroy everything human about us—our compassion, our friendships, and our capacity to care. But love has a way of defying all odds, even in the face of death

The Reaping
The Reaping marked the beginning of the end for most tributes. For me, it felt like the moment I had been preparing for my entire life. My name was called in District 4—a fishing district known for its agility and skill with weapons. My hands gripped the hem of my dress, but I didn’t hesitate as I stepped forward.
Then came the twist.
Each district would send three tributes instead of two. Rhys, my ex-best friend and the boy I’d once loved, volunteered himself. He smiled, but it wasn’t the soft, familiar grin I remembered. It was sharp, dangerous.
“I’m doing this for us,” he whispered as we stood on the stage.
But I knew better.
District 2’s Reaping was a spectacle. Cato stepped forward immediately, his broad shoulders and piercing blue eyes commanding attention. He was the perfect Career: brutal, confident, and eager to kill.
Clove followed, her face a mask of cocky determination. She was small but lethal, her knives practically an extension of her hands.
When a third boy, Marcus, was chosen by lottery, he paled at the sight of them. It was clear he would only slow them down.
Training in the Capitol
The Capitol training center was where reputations were made and alliances were formed. While most tributes gravitated toward Cato and Clove, I kept my distance. I focused on my strengths, working with every weapon in the room. My versatility didn’t go unnoticed.
I could feel their eyes on me as I dismantled a sparring partner with a spear, then moved on to archery with seamless precision.
“She’s dangerous,” Clove murmured to Cato as they watched me throw a knife with deadly accuracy.
Cato smirked. “I like dangerous.”
By the third day, they approached me.
“You’re wasting your time hiding,” Cato said, his voice low and challenging. “You belong with us.”
Clove tilted her head, her gaze sharp. “We could use someone like you. Someone who can keep up.”
Though I didn’t trust them, I agreed to an alliance. In the Games, trust was a luxury I couldn’t afford—but survival demanded allies.
The Betrayal
It was early in the Games when the betrayal happened. I had spent days avoiding the chaos of the Careers and the traps of the Gamemakers. I knew Rhys and Lila would come looking for me eventually, but I didn’t expect them to find me so soon.
The three of us had camped together in the training days before the Games, and that familiarity gave them the edge. They knew my habits, my strengths, and my weaknesses.
When Rhys stepped into the clearing, I froze.
“[Y/N],” he called, his voice almost gentle. “We’ve been looking for you.”
I gripped my spear tightly. His tone was wrong—too smooth, too practiced.
Lila emerged from the shadows, a knife glinting in her hand. “We’re still a team, right?”
My heart sank. “What do you want?”
Rhys’s expression darkened. “You have something we need—your weapons, your supplies, your skills. And if you won’t give them to us…”
He lunged.
The fight was savage and chaotic. Rhys moved faster than I remembered, his blade slashing through the air. I blocked his strikes with my spear, each impact reverberating through my arms.
Lila circled around me, her knife aimed at my back. I spun just in time, deflecting her attack with the butt of my spear. The movement left me exposed, and Rhys tackled me to the ground.
“You should’ve stayed with us,” he hissed, pinning me beneath him.
I screamed, my hands scrambling for anything I could use. My fingers closed around a rock, and I smashed it into his temple. He staggered back, blood dripping down his face.
Lila lunged at me again, but this time I was ready. I drove my spear into her chest, the blade sinking deep. Her scream cut off abruptly as she collapsed.
Rhys’s rage was palpable as he charged at me, his knife slicing into my side. Pain exploded through me, but I refused to give up. I twisted the spear from Lila’s body and swung it, the blade catching Rhys across the throat.
Blood sprayed across the clearing as he fell, gurgling and clawing at his neck. I watched him die, my chest heaving with adrenaline and grief.
The Giant Tribute
By the time I reunited with Cato and Clove, I was exhausted and bleeding. They didn’t ask questions, but I could see the worry in their eyes.
“You’re hurt,” Clove said, her hands steady as she bandaged my wounds.
Cato crouched beside me, his jaw tight. “What happened?”
“They’re gone,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “Rhys and Lila. They—”
He cut me off, his voice low and firm. “They don’t matter anymore. You’re here. You’re alive.”
For the first time, I let myself believe him.
We were ambushed by the giant tribute from District 7 two days later. He was massive, his axe dripping with the blood of his last victim.
Cato charged him without hesitation, his sword clashing against the giant’s axe. Sparks flew as their weapons collided, the force of the blows shaking the ground beneath them.
Clove darted around the giant, her knives finding their mark in his arms and legs. But he didn’t go down. He swung his axe in a wide arc, forcing both of them back.
Then he turned to me.
“You’re the one they’re talking about,” he said, his voice a low growl. “The one who can do everything. Let’s see what you’ve got.”
I raised my spear, my hands trembling. His axe came down, and I barely dodged in time. The blade buried itself in the dirt where I had been standing.
“Cato!” I screamed, panic flooding my voice.
Cato’s roar was deafening as he launched himself at the giant, his sword slicing through the air. Blood sprayed as he struck the giant’s side, but the tribute didn’t falter.
Clove’s knives found their way into the giant’s chest, each one driving deeper than the last. He stumbled, his movements slowing.
I saw my chance. Summoning every ounce of strength I had, I hurled my spear. The blade sank into the giant’s throat, and he collapsed with a gurgling cry.
A Rare Moment of Peace
That night, we camped in a cave hidden from the prying eyes of the Capitol. My side throbbed where the giant’s axe had grazed me, but I was alive.
Clove sat beside me, her hands tracing over the makeshift bandage. “You’re lucky,” she murmured. “A little deeper, and you’d be dead.”
Cato sat on my other side, his arm draped over my shoulders. “She’s not going anywhere,” he said firmly.
I leaned into him, exhaustion weighing me down. “I don’t deserve this,” I whispered.
“Stop,” Clove said, her voice sharp. “You’ve fought harder than anyone. You deserve to live.”
Cato’s hand tilted my chin up, his blue eyes locking onto mine. “She’s right. You’ve earned this.”
His lips met mine, the kiss slow and deliberate. It wasn’t just desire it was reassurance, a promise that I wasn’t alone. Clove leaned in, her lips brushing against my temple before moving to my mouth.
The three of us stayed like that, tangled together in the dim light of the cave. For a moment, the horrors of the arena melted away.
Against All Odds
When the announcement came that three tributes could win, it felt like a cruel joke. But for us, it was salvation.
The Gamemakers threw everything they had at us mutts, fire, floods but we endured.
By the time the hovercraft arrived, we were bloodied, broken, but alive. Cato carried me aboard, his arms steady despite his own injuries. Clove followed, her hand gripping mine tightly.
In the Capitol, we were paraded as victors, but we knew the truth. The Games had changed us forever.
But we had each other. And together, we would find a way to survive.
After the Arena
Life after the Games was a blur of interviews, parades, and whispered threats from President Snow. But through it all, we had each other.
Cato and Clove became my anchors, their love grounding me in a world that felt more dangerous than the arena. Nights were spent in quiet moments, Cato’s arms around me, Clove’s head on my shoulder, our bond unspoken but unbreakable.
“You’re ours,” Clove whispered one night, her lips brushing against mine. Cato’s hand cupped my face, his gaze filled with a tenderness I hadn’t thought him capable of.
“And we’re yours,” Cato added, his voice steady and sure.
For the first time, I believed it.
We had defied the odds, survived the Capitol’s games, and found love in the most unlikely of places. And no one, not even the Capitol, could take that from us.

THROUGH A RAPIST’S EYES” (PLS TAKE TIME TO READ THIS. It may save a life, It may save your life.)
An Article from Neena Susan Thomas
“Through a rapist’s eyes. A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interview…ed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:
1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.
3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.
5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.
6] Number three is public restrooms.
7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.
8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.
9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.
10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.
POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:
1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter. Now that you’ve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.
2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.
4] If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh – HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.
5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he’s out of there.
6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.
7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.
FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL ….
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.
2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you…. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and it’s better safe than sorry.
If u have compassion reblog this post. ‘Helping hands are better than Praying Lips’ – give us your helping hand.
