Red // Green // Blue
I’ve had this post saved in my drafts to celebrate the franchise’s 20th anniversary, but the recent string of events just changed my mind and I’ve decided to publish it today as a tribute to Pokémon Reorchestrated (PREO) and Kanto Symphony instead.
PREO did such a fantastic job covering the music from this franchise we all love. If you have never heard of it, you’re missing out.
Badly.
Spread the word.

I interrupt your regular stream of Project Bestiary to shamelessly hijack the Pokémon variants tag to grab me some quick followers.
I hereby present Corsola Morphology—to piss ezeqquiel off 800% more effectively than usual—based on real life corals.
fig 1. Montipora · A small polyp stony coral, often referred to as Vase Coral, although it may grow to resemble plates or flowers. fig 2. Tubastrea · Also known as Sun Coral, it catches zooplankton instead of photosynthesizes. fig 3. Pennatula · Commonly known as Sea Pen, it is named after its quill pen-like appearance. fig 4. Acropora · Many species within this genus develop different structures. It is responsible for the solid structure that supports a reef. fig 5. Dendronephthya · It is a soft coral popular with aquarists due to its beautiful colors and peaceful temperament. fig 6. Zoanthus · Known as the Green Sea Mat or Button Polyps, it is found in shallow waters around tropical regions. fig 7. Gorgonia · Growing up to several feet tall, this colorful variant is referred to as Sea Fan. fig 8. Diploria · It is a large stony coral commonly known as Brain Coral. Its hard body also supports the formation of a reef.

It’s been 3,000 5 years since I started making these abominations.
A bajillion procrastination and two nagging friends later… the files are finally resized, Marilyn Monchan’s mascara reapplied, the prophecies fulfilled.
I am here today to announce that The L’OLD Masterpieces are now available as prints from my store, because nothing implies “You’ve got exquisite taste” better than Mona Lisawk’s enigmatic smile on your wall.
You probably won’t regret getting one of those. I think.

Spoiler alert: I’m planning a set of three artworks for Pokémon Red & Green’s 20th Anniversary this February 27th.
But for now, I’m giving away one free print of the artwork above from 2012! • Reblogs & likes count • The winner will be randomized on January 27th 2016 midnight EST (so that it arrives roughly on the anniversary)
Alternatively, it’s $5 off from my store if you follow this link.
Stay tuned for the bigger, badder celebratory artworks.

The Last Judgment - WIP
Other than the rest of the Major Arcana cards, this is something that's been sitting on top of my to-do list since January 2013. I originally planned to work on this bit by bit, slowly building it to be the ultimate piece in my LOL'd Masterpieces parody series.
After months of struggling to fit this artwork into my tight schedule and motivating myself to fill the missing pieces, I've come to terms with the realization that this isn't how I play. As my buddy Ezequiel sums it, I'm the kind of guy who puts my heart to breed for one perfect pokémon and EV train it in one day—and leave everything else untouched in the boxes. Forever.
These weeks, I've been caught in limbo, not knowing where my heart lies. However, it is clear to me that Noktowl has been slowly losing his beat in the past several months.
Unlike my personal blog, though, I'm not going to burn this one down. I'm very well aware of the #INTERNALSCREAMING and #HOWDAREYOUs my posts have brought, and I'm not stealing them away from people for the sake of moving on. The pages are still there for everyone to enjoy and squeal at.
Maybe one day I'll check these half-full boxes and pick up from where I left. Or maybe I'll just peek and keep everything boxed the way they were. Nobody can tell what I'm going to face in the future, but I'm certain I'll be walking an adventure, to find a new land for my heart to lie on.
In a strange twist of events, this suspended painting might actually be the coup de grâce that Noktowl deserves.

I was hoping you could describe your thought process for the creation of the Pokemon Regional Crests. I really like your designs. I can't seem to decipher the Sinnoh one, but they all look amazingly well done!
Hello there! Shortly after the launch, PREO’s Eric Buchholz uploaded two WIP screenshots on Double Team’s site gallery. But you’re correct that I have never explained the thought process in depth.
Initially, I proposed the idea of having 6 different styles for 6 regions. We struck the idea down right away because we thought they wouldn’t go well with the album cover (which was nearly done at this point).

Afterwards, I began with sketching three different styles so we could see which one might work better.

The first idea featured the cover legendaries and iconic objects from each region. We never really liked the idea, though. It seemed too straightforward and overused.
The second idea revolved around the idea of having “mini-scenes” featuring iconic landmarks & objects from each region. However, we concluded that these “mini-scenes” looked too busy for the album booklet.

And this was the idea that made it to the booklet. Instead of featuring straightforward icons from each region, we decided to go with subtlety and come up with our own symbolisms—framed with solid, crest-like shapes.
For example, Kanto’s crest was centered around the DNA, representing Mewtwo’s creation tale. As for Sinnoh, time-space has always been the central theme of the legendaries. The framing was originally designed to be a mix of a cut diamond with time-space grid, but it got excessively complex, I had to remove the details.

As for the other regions, I’m not going to spoil the fun, so feel free to interpret them yourself! Let me know if you have something else in mind!

VIII - Strength
Strength represents calmness, an elevated part of the mind, dominating over primal impulses. When injured, it meditates and sharpens its mind.
