m374:
“Oh…”
Penny let out a soft sign of relief. She took the phone, holding in her palms carefully– even if the phone wasn’t this ‘siri’s’ body, she still wanted to be gentle with something of 9S’s.
“Uhm, alright…”
Leaning forward, Penny spoke; “Hello, Siri.”
“Hello,” the phone replied.
Penny smiled.
“I think it likes me.”
“It can’t like you or dislike you. It has no capabilities for independent thought, or emotions.”
9S of course said this casually without realizing how cruel it could sound.
He went away for a moment and retrieved a small and round looking machine and placed it on the ground only to activate it. It was just a roomba, that slowly started to circle around them.
“It’s like this machine here, all it does is vaccuum on it’s own. It’s a roomba. Siri and the roomba only ever do what they’re told to do, because they’re not programmed to think for themselves.”
9S moved back to Penny’s shoulder, looking over it.
“Isn’t that right, Siri?”
“That’s right, honey.” Siri said back in a flirtatious voice.

m374:
Penny let out a gasp, leaning towards 9S as she peered at his phone. She had no idea that phones could contain things like artificial intelligence, especially in a device so small!
While Penny did understand 9S’s explanation, she was still far too focused on the shock of the entire situation– especially when a sudden thought struck her.
“B, but, Nines…”
“Isn’t the phone its body?”
Even if it could not move like herself and 9S, it still existed within something, at least that was Penny’s line of thought.
“No, the phone isn’t it’s entire body.”
9S did not understand her abject horror at the idea. First because he understood perfectly Siri was just a program with no self awareness, and second because he was used to othering all of machine kind into something that was not real either.
“It’s actually stored in a really tiny portion of the phone. It doesn’t even take up all of the phone’s data. So it’s probably just a small chip in the whole phone, if you understand the metaphor.
He tried to hand the phone to Penny.
“Do you want to try talking to Siri? It’s a pretty fun program that early humans came up with. Think of it as a dinosaur compared to us.”

m374:
“What.”
The nickname was a surprise, though a much more pleasant one in comparison to the sight she saw unfold. She recognized the object of a cellphone, as she had one herself (and had seen plenty of humans utilize them). However, she was not familiar with the notion that such devices could talk.
“Who is Siri?”
The phone introduced itself with, “Your’s truly.”
“–?!”
Penny stood there, shocked into silence.
“It’s an extremely low level artificial intelligence that’s programmed to respond to basic voice commands, most often in the form of questions.”
9S replied in the most technical way possible. He sometimes forgot that not all other machines were scanner type models like him, or perhaps he just liked the euphoria of looking smart. He was somebody who seemed to want everybody to like him, like he was running for mayor of nothing.
He turned the phone around and pointed it towards her, so she could see the screen. He figured it would be obvious after that point.
“The Siri progam doesn’t have a body like us because it’s not intelligent enough, it’s just contained within this small phone.”

Owl laughed.
Of course, that was exactly what she was doing– she was just wondering how long it would be until 9S caught on. Seeing him raise his voice was all part of the fun.
“Oh, you think so?”
He was right again, though she would never say.
“Don’t friends joke around where you come from? Ah, how sad.”
“I don’t know... I was never... I never... I was always told to shut up...”
Even with half of his face covered in a blind fold, a series of obvious thoughts were written all over his face. It was like he was paging through a book of his own emotions in fast forward. When finally he hit the end, and his face went entirely blank.
“Let’s hang out again some other time, as friends. Then I’ll give you an answer okay?”
He tapped his forehead.
“I have some really high processing power, but even I need to take some time to think some things over.”

Owl stuck out her tongue quite childishly.
“Yuck!”
She leaned away from 9S, and obnoxiously stuck up her bandaged nose, as if a terrible smell had reached her. In the same motion, she twirled on her heel, as if the entire set of gestures was some sort of dance move.
“I never said that.”
Eto chuckled.
“You’re the one who came up with that deduction. If that was your first assumption, then you must be a pervert.”
“I think you’re just twisting my words around now!”
9S raised his voice because he did not know how to win the argument otherwise. He was somebody who talked quite a great deal, but he was usually told to be quiet, or enertained at best.
He never thought to analyze the emotions behind his words for so long either. Yorha models weren’t allowed to have them in the first place, even if he was always a particularly rebellious unit in that regard. “I don’t think you’re being a very good friend. All you’ve done so far is make fun of me.”

m374:
@noninetypes
Penny was smiling, even though she could not shake the slight feeling of unease nestled within her frame. She wondered what it was, that made her consider things that were so odd…
Thankfully, the welcome distraction of another came… though, such thoughts were not as easily shaken away.
“Nines,” Penny said softly.

“Could I ask you something?”
“Of course, anything for you, Pennies.”
9S mirrored back at her without looking up from what he was working on. In his hands he was manipulating a phone deftly with skilled precision. Even if he was not built to be as strong as Penny, there were some things he did better than her.
As he finished the upgrade to his phone he replaced the back again. At that point he finally looked at her, as much as where he looked meant anything while wearing a blindfold.
“Oh, I’m sorry I hope you don’t mind. I thought it would be nice if you had a nickname too. Umm... maybe I shouldn’t call you that.” He immediately waffled. “Siri, what’s a good time to give a girl a nickname?” The robotic voice in the phone asked him to repeat his question.

“Oh, is that so? I wonder what you’d taste like then.”
Though she had no interest in taking a bite out of him, the android next to her didn’t know that. She would let him come to his own conclusions on the matter.
Yet, she was quiet as 9S continued to speak, listening carefully to his answer.
“Ah, I see,” she finally said.
“So, you’re one of those. Hm, interesting, I wouldn’t have guessed just by looking at you.”
“I wouldn’t recommend that, most of my components are poisonous to ingest. We aren’t really built to be environmentally friendly because the world already ended.”
9S described again, not at all afraid of being eaten. It was illogical for her to do so, and he had died so many times already that he tried not to be bothered by the thought at all.
Perhaps the pain would become nothing more than a dulled sensation. He reacted much more to her insult.
“Wh- what are you? Are you calling me some kind of pervert?”

Eto laughed again.
“That’s fine. Whether or not I’m a person is something you’ll have to decide for yourself.”
The reality was that she was a monster, a terrifying thing that should never have been borne– but, her new friend had no inkling of such facts, and he never would. That was alright, though, as she was having plenty of fun just like this.
“Some people like pain, though, so much so that they’ll do anything for it. Do you think that’s strange?”
Suddenly leaning forward, Owl poked at the hand that 9S held tightly, curious if the movement could mean for an android.
“Does your hand need some oil?”
“I don’t use oil, that’s an extremely inefficient lubricant. My body simulates blood circulation just like a humans would.”
9S immediately corrected her. Unlike these probing conversations about emotions, he did not mind talking about technical details. He was built for this purpose after all, to pick apart and analyze other things for their mechanical workings.
Sometimes his curiousity wandered to their minds as well, but he tried hard not to because he was not supposed to.
“No, it’s not strange at all. I was loved a lot by the person who hurt me the most. It’s only natural I’d want to endure pain just to continue being with that person.”

Were they wearing a blindfold? How strange. Someone certainly wouldn’t be able to walk around easily without being able to see. Unless they were one of the many people in this city that had powers. There could be some abilities in their eyesight, maybe that’s how they were able to see Kiibo. Either way, it looked very weird and would attract attention.
“How rude! I am not old or a prototype! The professor spent all of his efforts creating me!” Being called old was just an insult! He was a one of a kind, not something from a factory!
“I’m the ultimate robot, Kiibo, an A.I. How about yourself? You do seem to know a lot about machines to ask about models.”
“Of course I know about machines. You need to be well informed on the enemy that you’re tasked with destroying. I’m the scanner unit number nine type s.”
9S said casually before quickly moving onto the next subject. He did not feel like dwelling on the never ending war between machines and androids that raged in his timeline, especially since he had been the only consciousness he could remember surviving.
Rather than dwell on those memories, he was instantly taken up by his curiousity for this old looking model. Every joint seemed visible on their body, but he could tell they weren’t strictly metal either, perhaps some kind of polymer.
“You’re so inefficiently constructed are you sure that you’re the utlimate design somebody could come up with. Wait, you were designed by a human? How fascinating. That’s pre-singularity then. You’re like an ancestor to me, like a great, great, great, great, great, grandfather.”

Eto paused, momentarily surprised by the android’s words. She at first wondered how he could use a search engine without having a phone, and then remembered that he was an android. Well, that was certainly something– what a nifty function.
She laughed.
“I never said that the story was my own.” That was a lie, she was just toying with him. “Ufufu… do you think I’m a bad person?”
She was, and she knew it, but she was eager to hear what he might say.
“Some people enjoy that agony, you know. Or, they might not even notice it. Which do you think is worse, being aware or not?”
9S held onto his own stolen hand. The glove, and even the shape, long delicate feminine fingers were nothing like the other hand which was covered in a black leather glove. He seemed to reach and hold onto it without even noticing the gesture.
“I don’t really know if you’re a person yet.”
9S understood nothing about her. She was unlike any creature he had met, and definitely any android or machine. His ever scanning eyes looked at her with pure confusion in them.
“That’s a redundant question. There’s no way to be unaware. Love can’t exist without pain, love itself is agony. The only people who claim to be unaware are just ignoring it. That’s not the same as not knowing.” 9S felt his own blindfold heavy on his face, and wondered why he still wore it when he had gone through such trouble to remove it. “Turning a blind eye, and being blind aren’t the same thing. You know, you always know, because it’s impossible to ignore pain.”

9S looked at the other in front of him of mechanical make and white hair. It might have been like staring in a mirror, if the other boy did not have obvious robot parts from the neck downward. Before he could say anything else 9S’s innate curiosity took him over.
“What’s your make and model? This is really old looking stuff are you some kind of prototype.” A single leather gloved hand moved forward to poke at him, but 9S was considerate enough to stop himself from poking the stranger.
“W-wait. I need to ask before proceeding, are you a machine or an android?”

“A mother is someone who cares for others like children. Haven’t you ever seen a wild animal and its little ones? Or, do those not exist in your world?”
Eto had no hesitation with her own explanation and subsequent questions. Even if he interrupted her, she could not resist poking more and more at such an interesting subject.
Yet, at 9S’ answer, the hybrid laughed.
“What an interesting answer.”
“If you came to love the person who hurt you, because you turn into someone similar, then who would you be hurting? Yourself, or the person you’ve come to love?”
Clapping her bandaged hands together, Eto stood once more.
“Perhaps it depends on the person.”
“You know I just googled your question while we were talking now, and the scenario you described sounds pretty much exactly like the plot summary of a book called ‘The Black Goat’s Egg.’
9S interrupted her with his own tangent. It was easy to forget by how round his cheeks looked that he was still in fact a robot. He even managed to get a good wi fi signal in a terrible back alley such as this which meant that he was better than most phones.
“You shouldn’t take credits for the works of others, that’s not very nice. I know we’re friends but I don’t want to be friends with a bad person.”
There he went, continuing to pretend like he cared. He went back to her question though turning his head away from the side and back towards her.
“It doesn’t matter, love itself is agony. Both people would be hurting because they couldn’t do anything but hurt one another.”

m374:
In stunned silence, Penny watched 9S as he talked, her own eyes fixated on the red glow of the other android’s.
Love– what was that? What was it about that word, that feeling, that would cause 9S to say such things? What did it mean to be someone’s precious person?
Penny did not understand, and wondered if it was possible for her to do so at all. Moreover, she could not help but wonder about the differences between herself and 9S. They were both androids, but they seemed so…
“You don’t have to apologize,” she finally blurted out. “I was the one who asked…”
Though he covered his face, Penny still continued to look at 9S. Her fingers twitched, wanting to reach out to him; instead, her hands remained at her sides.

“It’s– alright.” It wasn’t. “So, uhm…”
Penny took a step closer, forcing herself to smile. She tapped 9S on the shoulder, in hopes that he would look at her again.
“Why don’t we just enjoy the day together? We don’t have to worry about whatever weird things are going on.”
9S’s eyes stopped glowing, as he dedicated a great amount of programming to suppressing those thoughts and the virus that came with them. He was quiet for awhile, only listening to what Penny said.
He finally stood up on his own and took Penny by the hand without asking. However, despite his previous words the gesture itself was not forceful. Instead, he stroked the top of her hand with his thumb hoping to warm up somewhat her much colder body lacking in even artificial heat.
“This hand... it used to belong to a person I loved. That’s why I know it’s better to just not think about these things.”
He tried to reassure her again. Even if 9S liked to eplain things and often rambled on about robotics around her, he had really told her almost nothing about himself.
“Let’s just go for a walk then like this. I like being around you Penny, things are so much simpler.” He meant it as a compliment but it really did demonstrate the difference between the two of them.

“That’s sad. I pity you, so I’ll be your friend. Now you have three again.”
The hybrid reached out, and with a bandaged hand gave the top of 9S’ head a simple pat. She sat down across from him, sitting like a child with her legs crossed. Reclining in such a position, Owl hummed.
“That’s alright. They say the best of friends come from different worlds. If you want to make a lot of friends, you’ll have to meet all sorts of people. This city has more than enough, though.”
“I’ll tell you a good story, but listen up. I don’t like to repeat myself.”
She leaned in suddenly, and poked 9S on the nose.
“There once was a mother and her son. The mother was a cold-hearted and cruel serial killer, and her son resented her for such devious acts. He was disgusted by her, but still held feelings for his mother. Yet, over time, the son realizes that he, too, is beginning to be filled with the desire to slaughter others just like his mother.”
Suddenly, she paused, and stood.
“Tell me, how do you think a story like that would end? You must have a unique outlook being a robot, so I’m curious to hear what you think.”
“I can just record you with my audio functions.”
9S said. He did not exactly understand the difference between listening and hearing though. It was why he always walked around with a blind fold over his eyes that he could still see through. He had full occular functions, but he did not perceive.
“What’s a mother?”
9S asked immediately. He had a basic idea of what family was. There was a member of Yorha who wanted to feel like family to him, but there were not enough records left behind of humans to know the specifics.
Technically, they were disallowed from craving such things in the first place.
“Is it bad for humans to kill? If that was so then why would they design androids capable of killing for them? Oh sorry, I shouldn’t be rude I think if they became too much like the person that always killed and hurt them, they’d probably come to love that person right?”
