Educate yourself. When a question about a certain topic pops up, Google it. Watch movies and documentaries. When something sparks your interest, read about it. Read read read. Study, learn, stimulate your brain. Don’t just rely on the school system, educate that beautiful mind of yours.

You need to educate yourself. Read the book about a country you’ve only heard about. Listen to this documentary about Sargasso Sea on Youtube. Pay attention to those little reoccuring details that keep coming back. Those topics that mysteriously keep showing up in diffterent courses and movies, sometimes just one sentence, sometimes more. They are random... Or are they? Can you really tell? Those are especially important, for one day the world will check if you pay attention.
something I keep telling myself lately

possibly relatable language learner things
breaking out in to a sweat every time someone asks you how many languages you speak
not making any noticeable progress for months
oh my god i’m so fluent i can’t belie- wait no i’m not never mind
can i hold a conversation in my target language today
the cringey shit that you make yourself watch just so that you can listen to your target language
switching keyboards
either understanding everything or nothing. no inbetween.
hell yeah i can use this languag- wait no i forgot how to order food again
can i speak this language????
oh my GOD why are all these resources only for beginners
listening/reading/writing/speaking skills being all over the place
“say something in x!”
being mistaken for a native speaker. the best feeling.

Chiune Sugihara. This man saved 6000 Jews. He was a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania. When the Nazis began rounding up Jews, Sugihara risked his life to start issuing unlawful travel visas to Jews. He hand-wrote them 18 hrs a day. The day his consulate closed and he had to evacuate, witnesses claim he was STILL writing visas and throwing from the train as he pulled away. He saved 6000 lives. The world didn’t know what he’d done until Israel honored him in 1985, the year before he died.

「Learn Japanese」 “to pretend to VERB, be NOUN, be ADJ” - VERB/NOUN/ADJ + ふりをする
The word 振り (ふり/furi), which translates to “pretense, show, appearance,” is used in the grammar pattern ふりをする (usually written in kana) following a Plain-Form VERB (Dictionary Form, Negative-ない Form, た-Form, etc.), a NOUN (followed by the particle の), or an ADJECTIVE (followed by the particle な if it is a な-Adjective) to mean “to pretend to VERB,” “to pretend to be NOUN,” and “to pretend to be ADJECTIVE” respectively.
Plain-Form VERB + ふりをする NOUN + の + ふりをする い-ADJECTIVE + ふりをする な-ADJECTIVE + な + ふりをする
Example(s): 死んだふりをする Shinda furi o suru “to play dead”
聞かなかったふりをしてください。 Kikanakatta furi o shite kudasai. “Please pretend you didn’t hear anything.”
今日彼は病気のふりをしている。 Kyou kare wa byouki no furi o shite iru. “He is pretending to be sick today.”
彼女は恥ずかしそうなふりをした。 Kanojo wa hazukashii sou na furi o shita. “She pretended to be shy.”

_っ_り Adverbs
In Japanese, there’s a surprising amount of adverbs that are four characters long, the second being a small っ and the fourth, a り. It’s useful to know a few to make your sentences more interesting :D (Note, they don’t always translate to an English adverb, like many Japanese parts of speech, but I will give the best translation I can)
がっかり- disappointed
びっくり- surprised
そっくり- identical or similar
ぴったり- exactly
はっきり- clearly
あっさり- simple or simply
すっかり- completely
さっぱり- uncomplicated
たっぷり- plenty
ひっそり- quiet
てっきり- certain
きっぱり- plainly
おっとり- easy-going
ばったり- suddenly
ゆっくり- slowly
Here is a Quizlet set I made for these types of words, I will definitely add more to the set soon.
