bc if the usa is gone (🙏🏻) and the american continent has been divided into "the north american union" and "the society of south america", one would assume at some point people would start using "north american" and "south american" instead of the older nationalities. so it's pretty weird that characters in this comic (and not just wakandans) keep using "american" to refer to (i assume) people from what used to be the usa.

unless the north american union just decided to keep the usa tradition of appropriating the "american" gentilic for themselves, which would be on brand i guess.

ok so either usmi happens way before in the ubp chronology than the rest of the books (like, between issues 14/15* at the latest) and just had no impact in their lives whatsoever, or things are getting back to the status quo real fast.

*= i was gonna say between 13/14, because it's implied t'challa and ororo immediately leave wakanda after issue 14, but the suit he's wearing in usmi #2 is the one he dusts off in #14. i guess a random child dropping on their laps could delay his plans, but miles says it takes "weeks" between him arriving on 6160 and getting to wakanda... meanwhile, issues 13 and 14 canonically take place a month apart. i'd say it's an easier bet that suit was just a miscommunication with the artist

i don't think there's any cape comic character i truly hate. i acknowledge that this isn't a tv series, and i'll never know as much about a character i only ever see in passing as someone who has read all of their appearances. the more you care, the more you know, and the more you know, the more you care. so i'm always open to the possibility that maybe i just haven't read the right comics for that particular character, and likely never will. so, even if some of them i don't care about, and some of them i'm annoyed by, there's really no one i'd say i hate.

and the thing is!! the biggest* reason why he annoys me is how much he takes up of the spotlight, especially with the x-men. i actually enjoy him with the avengers! and a big reason why is that when he's there he feels like just another member of the team. but with the x-men it's like everything always has to be about him, and this book managed to make it a thousand times worse, because it's a fucking wolverine solo book!!! and it's the only way you can read about 99% of the most iconic x-men characters!!!! it's as if this was specifically designed to punish sane people holy fucking shit

like, you know how many x-men characters have appeared in 16 issues of the comic titled "ultimate x-men"??? six. you know how many have appeared in 6 issues of the fucking wolverine solo book??? TWELVE!!!!!! and that's not even taking into account how many of each are A-lists. fucking ridiculous.

i think this could go three ways (that would please me). 1. she's a triple agent for the ultimates. 2. she's doing this behind the team's backs but still as a way to try and help them. 3. she really intended to betray them in order to save herself and hank, but when the time comes to actually go through with it she won't be able to.

ok, i'm gonna rationalise the iron gpt thing.

we don't know how this kind of AI works in 616, but it has to be different. not even getting into the ultron/vision/jocasta/viv/etc of it all, but if stuff like FRIDAY and NATALIE exist then there's no way the LLM "AI" we have would make the same impact (and tony has explicitly called iron gpt "a machine-learning model"). but civilians have never been shown to have access to this kind of AI, which leads to assume it's just not possible for whatever reason.

so maybe stuff like chatgpt started popping up on 616 and are being marketed by charlatans as being "just like the ones superheroes have, but now for everyone!". so when tony lost access to his stuff and couldn't use proper AI he thought "ok, let's see what this thing can do" and found out it was absolute garbage. and now he's trying to build one that actually works, so people stop using the crap ones that are available, and using himself as a test subject.

because it's been shown time and time again that iron gpt doesn't work properly, and i can see no other reason for tony to keep using it instead of going back to the actually competent AIs he's used for years! according to the wiki (i'm not caught up on current comics), FRIDAY has been given a physical body as some sort of AI rights thing, but since riri is still using NATALIE i assume this isn't a general case and he could just build another one for the suit.

as for the issues with real life AI beyond it being a useless misinformation machine: this one hasn't been show to produce images/videos, which leaves out most of the worries irt art theft, fraud, revenge porn, pedophilia, etc. we also don't know the database it was trained on, so the benefit of the doubt can be given irt copyrighted books (and maybe even fanfics, i could see him being aware of this problem through kamala). and one has to assume it's using some stark industries hadwave-y green energy, which covers the environmental cost.

reading the messages from after this issue on the discord and idk, maybe i'm giving too much benefit of the doubt but i can see reason behind almost everything tony's been doing.

"why is he paying them with crypto?" because it's harder to trace! it doesn't mean he's a cryptobro, crypto is just the best way to take part in shady money exchanges

"why did he use a chatgpt rip-off?" because he had no access to any of his tech, nor time/resources to build stuff from scratch, and wanted something that at least warned him of incoming danger. there's been no trace of it in this issue (which also features visual updates on the suit). also we can't even say with certainty that this AI has the same implications (like environmental costs, or even just being fancy text prediction) as the real life counterpart, considering 616 has been dealing with way more advanced AI (including actual AI) for a lot longer.

the betting app i'm holding out judgement because i think it might be plot-relevant, and the financing terrorists thing... yeah it does seem rushed. like, yes, tony is known for making morally questionable choices if he feels there's no other option available, but it's usually a "last resort" thing. though i have no idea what's going on in this event beyond the im comic (like how deep they are in the emperor doom thing at this point, and what else they've already tried), so i'll also wait.
