opens Sept 16:
“Lines of Sight”  Carmen Herrera
Whitney Museum of American Art, 99 Gansevoort St., NYC
first museum exhibition of this artist in New York City in nearly two decades. Focusing on the years 1948 to 1978, the period during which Herrera developed her signature style, the show features more than fifty works, including paintings, three-dimensional works, and works on paper. It begins with the formative period following World War II, when Herrera lived in Paris and experimented with different modes of abstraction before establishing the visual language that she would explore with great nuance for the succeeding five decades. Many of these works have never been displayed before in a museum.

opens Sept 10: “All Inside of Itself, Close”  Yevgenyia Baras Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, 327 Broome St., NYC. "Throughout these poetic abstractions, Baras traces a wide-ranging continuum of experiences, from that of the body, to language, to landscape, and anthropology -- and their attendant symbology. Through the canvases’ rich surfaces, allusions emerge slowly, the many modes of application (embroidery, collage, quilting, wood working) lending a depth to both the physical and semiotic structure of the painting. Only at this point does the imagery arise, pivoting upon each authentic translation and interpretation of the work. Despite the specificity of her personal, pictorial vocabulary, the work’s impact is direct in any context, and rewards a multiplicity of readings.” - through Oct 9

Hilma af Klint New Museum, 235 Bowery, NYC Video Link: https://youtu.be/SXkbcLq561Q (links are clicky on our tumblr, go to our profile) in this video, James Kalm visits the New Museum, and scurried up to the fourth floor to spend time in attentive contemplation in front of the works of Hilma af Klint. Since her rediscovery in the mid 1980s af Klint has become among painters a near mystic figure. Documented to have made totally abstract paintings at least a decade ahead of her mail counterparts like Kandinsky, Picabia and Kupka, af Klint rather decided to place stipulations in her will that would restrict the exposition of her works until twenty years after her death. This selection of sixteen paintings is the first major presentation of the work in New York in decades, and given the changing perspectives of feminism, identity politics and new insights into abstract painting, provides a fresh basis on which, not only painters, but young artists of any stripe can consider the complex position of the individual artist within their society. “The Keeper” was curated by Massimiliano Gioni. This program was recorded August 11, 2016. A musical introduction is provided by Ellis, and was recorded just south of the New Museum on the Bowery. (at New Museum)
