New Radio Documentary Highlights the Legendary Songwriting Partnership between Neil Diamond and Gilbert Bécaud When Neil Diamond agreed to star in the 1980 movie ‘The Jazz Singer,’ he set out to write songs for the film with French composer/performer Gilbert Bécaud, already one of the top artist on the European music scene at that time. The partnership brought together two of the most successful singer/songwriters in the world, and their collaborations produced spectacular results, including “Love on the Rocks,” the lead single from the soundtrack. The pair also wrote “September Morn” together, a song that was considered for inclusion in the movie, but was ultimately used as the title track to Diamond’s 1979 album, a year before ‘The Jazz Singer’ was released. In the new episode of the radio-documentary series ‘Documenting Popular Music,’ veteran journalist Robert Neil takes a look at the historic partnership as well as the songs Diamond and Bécaud wrote together. The program highlights details of the collaboration as well as songs that have not been spotlighted in the past. ‘Documenting Popular Music’ is available as a podcast on iTunes (link in bio), iHeartRadio, Google Play Music, TuneIn and a variety of other outlets, including the O&F Studios website, http://oandfstudios.com/documenting-popular-music. The Playboy All-Star Band, 1973 The artists that made up Playboy’s 1973 All-Star Band were a reflection of who was popular in the early 70s as well as how knowledgeable music fans were. The band, determined by fan voting, was a cross section of rock, pop and jazz music and both Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones were prime examples of the rock influence as were Elton John, Keith Emerson, Ian Anderson, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney. Carole King, still riding high on the success of her 1971 ‘Tapestry’ album, symbolized the singer/songwriter influence of the day. Meanwhile, Burt Bacharach and Hal David represented old-school songwriters, and the pair created some pop music’s most memorial songs of the 60s and early 70s: - "(They Long to Be) Close to You" "Walk On By" "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me" "What the World Needs Now Is Love" "The Look of Love" "This Guy's in Love with You" "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" However, by the time the 1973 version of the Playboy Band was released, the association between Bacharach and David was ending, and the pair was entangled in disagreements that spawned a lawsuit. The backing musicians featured the usual stable of instrumentalists well-known to the public, including Pete Fountain, Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich. And the trumpet section consisted of the same group of horn players the pubic knew best, Doc Severinsen (who had replaced Henry Mancini as the group’s leader), Miles Davis, Al Hirt and Herb Alpert. As usual, the classic caricature illustrations were masterfully created by the very talented Bill Utterback. #paulMcCartney #mickjagger #caroleking #musician #eltonjohn #milesdavis #playboy #rockandroll #popularmusic #burtBacharach #ポールマッカートニー #エルトンジョン Reminder: The O&F Studios' series ‘Documenting Popular Music,’ features radio documentaries that tell stories about music and artists from the 60s, 70s and 80s, including shows about Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Herb Alpert, Dan Fogelberg, David Bowie, John Lennon, Janis Ian, Poco and The Monkees as well as a look at country/pop crossover music from the early 80s. The Playboy All-Star Band, 1974 The Playboy Music Polls from the 1960s and 1970s were a classic part of music culture from that period. The idea of having an All-Star Band with your favorite musicians, singers, songwriters, etc. was another way – besides the cheese cake models – that Playboy allowed you to live a fantasy. The caricature of the band members brought it all to life and were one of the best parts of feature. Imagine a trumpet section that featured Doc Severinsen, Miles Davis, Al Hurt and Herb Alpert, and a reed section with Edgar Winter, Pete Fountain, Stan Getz and Cannonball Adderley. The 1974 band had all of that as well as Neil Diamond, Elton John, Carly Simon, the Allman Brothers and the Chicago instrumental combo. And then there was Paul McCartney on bass, Eric Clapton on guitar, Keith Emmerson on organ and the great Buddy Rich on drums. #neildiamond #herpalpert #eltonjohn #carlysimon #paulMcCartney #milesdavis #ericclapton #musician #popularmusic #gilbertbecaud #ポールマッカートニー #エルトンジョン - ◇The current episode of The O&F Studios’ radio-documentary series ‘Documenting Popular Music’ takes a look at the remarkable songwriting partnership between Neil Diamond and French composer Gilbert Bécaud in the late 1970s. Neil Diamond’s Historic Writing Partnership with Gilbert Bécaud The new episode of ‘Documenting Popular Music’ takes a look at the songwriting collaboration between Neil Diamond and French composer Gilbert Bécaud. At the time these two men met in the 1970s, they were both two of the most successful writers and performers in their respective countries. Diamond’s plan was to write songs for ‘The Jazz Singer’ soundtrack – the movie in which Diamond made his acting debut in 1980 – with Bécaud. Ultimately, five of the 11 original songs from the movie were Diamond/Bécaud compositions, including the first single, a song that would become one of the biggest recordings in Diamond’s career. In the ‘Documenting Popular Music’ episode, veteran journalist Robert Neil spotlights the remarkable songwriting collaboration and offers details about the Diamond/ Bécaud partnership that have not been highlighted before. The radio-documentary series is available as a podcast on iTunes (link in bio), iHeartRadio, Google Play Music, TuneIn and a variety of other outlets, including the ‘Documenting Popular Music’ site, http://documentingpopularmusic.libsyn.com. #neildiamond #gilbertbecaud #gilbertbécaud #gilbertbecaudforever #songwriter #musician #80smusic #80s #soundtrack #moviemusic @neil_diamond_fanpage @neildiamond #popularmusic

Glenn Frey, Career-Spanning Box Set Out Now May 14, 2018-- Geffen/UMe has released a four-disc box set of the very best of Glenn Frey's solo career called ‘Above the Clouds: The Collection.’ - The compilation brings together key elements of Frey's music -- both before and after the Eagles became international superstars -- showcasing the broad range and wide influence of the Detroit-bred singer-songwriter in the process. The first disc, aptly subtitled The Very Best of Glenn Frey, is chock-full of major chart hits, including the Beverly Hills Cop smash "The Heat Is On," the gritty, slide-guitar-driven gutbucket groove of "Smuggler's Blues," the epic Miami Vice ballad "You Belong to the City," the inward-looking poignancy of "Soul Searchin'," and much more. Disc 2 explores Frey's prowess beyond the charts, from the classy to the classic. Included are the broad swath of "After Hours," his majestic take on "For Sentimental Reasons," a harmonic nod to the Beach Boys with a spot-on cover of "Caroline, No," and the sheer battle cry of "Route 66" among them. The third disc highlights the early output of the duo formed by longtime friends Frey and JD Souther known as Longbranch/Pennywhistle makes its digital debut. Originally released on the Amos label in 1969, the self-titled Longbranch/Pennywhistle features "Kite Woman" and "Run, Boy, Run," which served as seeds to of the country-rock movement Frey and the Eagles perfected to a T. The final disc, a live DVD culled from a telling performance at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, in July 1992, on the Strange Weather tour, shows Frey and his top-shelf band at the height of their powers, veering from the cool-breeze manifestos of "Long Hot Summer" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" to the rip-roaring crackle of "Strange Weather" to the everyone-join-in vibes of "Party Town." - SOURCE UMe #glennfrey #theeagles #jdsouther #newmusic #countryrock #musician #guitarist #popularmusic #グレンフライ - ◇The O&F Studios' radio-documentary series, ‘Documenting Popular Music,’ is available as a podcast on iTunes (link in bio)◇

Poison's 30th Anniversary Vinyl Edition of ‘Open Up And Say… Ahh!’ Out Now April 25, 2018 – Fans of the group Poison are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band’s 1988 best-selling album ‘Open Up And Say… Ahh!,’ which has just been reproduced for a vinyl, 180-gram reissue. The LP was pressed in two collectible color variants: red vinyl (available at select retailers) and a limited edition of 1,000 in green vinyl (available exclusively at The Sound Of Vinyl). - The re-release restores the album's original full-frame cover art, which initially featured a glammed-up cat person's elongated tongue extending fully down the middle of the cover image. However, on the album's first release, the cover photo featured a tighter, widescreen shot, with a mostly green-eyes-only view amidst a black background. First released in 1988, ‘Open Up And Say… Ahh’! cemented Poison's status as one of the biggest bands of the 1980s, in turn garnering four Top 20 hits and including their first No. 1 single, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." - Produced by Tom Werman (Cheap Trick, Ted Nugent, Twisted Sister), engineered by Duane Baron, and recorded at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles, ‘Open Up And Say… Ahh’! sealed Poison's standing in the rock pantheon with ten tracks chock-full of instantly singable choruses mixed with fist-pumping riffs, courtesy of the four-man-band chemistry between vocalist/rhythm guitarist Bret Michaels, lead guitarist C.C. DeVille, bassist Bobby Dall, and drummer Rikki Rockett. Track Listing 1A 1. Love On The Rocks 2. Nothin' But A Good Time 3. Back To The Rocking Horse 4. Good Love 5. Tearin' Down The Walls 1B 1. The show officially opens at the legendary Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City on April 23, 2018. Even though Summer sadly passed away in 2012, her cultural impact and legacy carries ever onward, and she garnered a well-deserved posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Summer was also a featured artist on the 2017 album ‘A Tribute to Dan Fogelberg,’ where she covered “Nether Lands” using the piano track Fogelberg played for the original recording. The O&F Studios’ review of that album can be heard on the ‘Documenting Popular Music’ podcast. The new greatest hits package features two rare remixes from Grammy-nominated remix producer Ralphi Rosario: "MacArthur Park (Rosabel's Radio Mix)," and "Hot Stuff," a new rework in collaboration with Erick Ibiza. Another rarity is Summer's German-language rendition of "White Boys" that she recorded while in the German cast of ‘Hair.’ - 1. I Feel Love 2. Love To Love You Baby 3. I Remember Yesterday 4.
