Text
In what way does the art of our time relate to how we view the human? How does an object of art that has been taken from its initial context to be displayed as a ‘pure object’ relate to how we can observe a human being, in a detached way? How do socially-imposed standards of beauty contribute to objectification? How does the value of an object compare to the value of a human?

“I have wrestled with death. It is the most unexciting contest you can imagine. It takes place in an impalpable greyness, with nothing underfoot, with nothing around, without spectators, without glamour, without glory, without the great desire of victory...” Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad

The making of Objec-Orientalis, a project by Eva Rocha.  Thanks to the many women who took part in this project and that, by doing so, gave face to those women caught in trafficking or objectified in any other way. There are many ways in which our societies, look at a person - even ourselves - and assign a value in terms of beauty, race, age, status, nationality, gender or any other stigmatizing category. Objectification takes place in many ways when a human is viewed as something less them human.
