Herein lies information on various authorities and social groups that have effect over the Wizarding World in Britain. Many characters are either a part of these, associated with them, or influenced in some manner by them. New groups and factions are sure to arise as our game grows and evolves.

GOVERNMENT

British Ministry Of Magic

After the war, most of the Death Eaters and Voldemort sympathizers that had taken up positions in the Ministry were ousted and sentenced to Azkaban. The great purge allowed new blood amongst the ranks, and the future looked bright coming out of the ashes of the war. However, those that slid under the radar slowly inched forward their agenda in the coming years, swaying others to their way of thinking outright manipulating or showing force to get their way. The once tolerant Ministry slowly enacted laws making not only the day to day lives of Muggle-born wizards more difficult, but some half-bloods as well. Many muggle-borns lost their jobs in the Ministry due to ‘poor performance’, although the more exemplary Muggle-borns manage to hold onto their jobs by the skin of their teeth.

Magical Congress Of The United States Of America

Relations between MACUSA and the Ministry of Magic have been always tepid at best, the two communities never seeing quite eye to eye. As MACUSA’s primary aim was to rid the continent of corrupt wizards, it was no surprise that during Voldemort’s war, the two overseeing governments banned together, pooling their resources to combat the threat as needed. Even after Voldemort’s demise, they still remained interlinked. However, over the last several years their relations have become increasingly strained as the Ministry’s laws and views on Muggle-borns in particular has become less and less progressive.

MEDIA

The Daily Prophet

It's no secret that the Daily Prophet tends to slant their news in the favor of the Ministry of Magic's views, often being used to spread information as the Ministry would prefer it to be known. Whether it is truth or factual is more often than not questionable, as at the heart of it the Daily Prophet is in it for the actual 'profit' rather than their integrity. Regardless, many eat up the sensational and scandalous news, often taking it at face value even though the information might be entirely erroneous and fictitious.

The Quibbler

To the outsider, the Quibbler seems nothing more than just another ridiculous tabloid, not unlike it's muggle counterpart. Weaved between articles about strange oddities and magical creatures, however, lies a plethora of conspiracy theories that you wouldn't find anywhere else. While the Daily Prophet might not dare to make waves, the Quibbler is no stranger to stirring up controversy, even going at far to even call the Ministry itself corrupt at ever turn. Of course, by far and wide they're still regarded as more of a gossip magazine trying to be edgy rather than a reputable source of information. While it might not have the same reach or reputation as the Prophet, their stories do reach nearly as many ears, even if many take the articles with a grain of salt.

INDIVIDUALS

Death Eaters

With the Dark Lord gone and most of his followers imprisoned, those that managed to evade punishment seemingly defected. Death Eaters for all intents and purposes were considered disbanded, although their stances on blood purity surely remained. Without their leader, most slinked out of the limelight completely. For others, they saw freedom and opportunity without Voldemort at the helm, and so they bid their time to recoup this time fueled by each of their own agendas.

The Order

The Order of the Phoenix disbanded not too long after the war. Torn apart my the loss of their own and no longer having a unified purpose, the group went their separate ways. Many of the members still kept in contact, bound by friendship, career, and family. Thus, it was no surprise that many of the original members banded right back to together when rumors began to emerge that muggle-born children were being kidnapped or murdered to prevent them from becoming part of magical society. From there they attempted to put moles in the Ministry to ascertain information, as well as some families secretly enacting safe-houses in order to house the few children they were able to save.

Our member groups are divided by character alignment. They’re each named for the motivation, values or ideals that each group represents.

INTEGRITY (LAWFUL GOOD)

These people act as a good person is expected or required to act. They combine a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly. They tell the truth, keep their word, help those in need, and speak out against injustice. Your typical Goody Two-Shoes, they hate to see an individual in the wrong go unpunished. They can experience restricted freedom, and even enforce it on others through their strict adherence to moral standards. They criminalize self-interest and can be overly critical of others.

HUMANE (NEUTRAL GOOD)

These folks do the best that a good person can do, they are devoted to helping the greater good. They work with or obey the government but don't feel beholden to them. While they will follow the law if it's best and even make friends with people in authority, they will, without hesitation, say Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!. They operate on a philosophy that goodness itself should be advanced by whatever means necessary. Often, they are seen helping charities, donating time/money, and generally pursuing altruistic actions. They care more about the needs of the many than those of the few. They value free will, prosperity, and justice. On principle, they go with the majority and live their lives within the accepted norm. Unfortunately, their attitude tends to advance mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable because they want those standards met. They can become preoccupied with a good outcome and slip into the negative 'ends justify the means' sort of mindset.

TRANSCENDENT (CHAOTIC GOOD)

These characters act as their conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of them or what their government thinks. They make their own way, but are kind and benevolent. They believe in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations. They follow their own moral compass; this can sometimes disrupt the order of society and punishes those who do well for themselves.

ORTHODOX (LAWFUL NEUTRAL)

These characters act as law, tradition, or a personal code directs them. Order and organization are paramount to them. They tend towards one of two mindsets: personal order and to live by a code or they may believe in order for all and favor a strong, organized government. These mindsets can lead to situations that eliminate all freedom, choice, and diversity in society.

PRAGMATIC (TRUE NEUTRAL)

A neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. They don't feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. They have a noted lack of bias; they think of good as better than evil as a default yet don't care either way. Still, they are not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way. Their attitude can be a dangerous one to have as it represents apathy, indifference, and a lack of conviction.

AUTONOMY (CHAOTIC NEUTRAL)

These characters follow their whims, they are individualists in the extreme. They only ever value their own freedom; they avoid authority, resent restrictions, and challenge traditions. They won't intentionally disrupt organizations and have little care for anarchy. They are often seen as unpredictable, but their behavior is not totally random; they protect themself and whatever interests they have. At their darkest, they can seek to eliminate all authority, harmony, and order in society.

ASCENDANT (LAWFUL EVIL)

A lawful evil villain methodically takes what they want within the limits of their code of conduct without regard for whom it hurts. Often, they are as committed to evil as a lawful crusader. They care about tradition, loyalty, and order but not about freedom, dignity, or life. They play by the rules set by society but without mercy or compassion. They are comfortable in a hierarchy and would like to rule, but are willing to serve. They condemn others not according to their actions but according to race, religion, homeland, or social rank. They are loath to break laws or promises; this is driven by their own nature and because they depend on societal order to protect themselves from people who oppose them morally. Some of these characters can have particular taboos, such as not killing in cold blood (but having underlings do it) or not letting children come to harm (if it can be helped). They imagine that these compunctions put them above unprincipled villains.

SOVEREIGNTY (NEUTRAL EVIL)

These characters tend to be villains who do whatever they can get away with. They are out for themselves, pure and simple. They don't care about who they harm or kill in their ambition for profit, sport, or convenience. They have no love of order and hold no illusion that following laws, traditions, or codes would make them any better or more noble. They don't love chaos and can be more focused an other evil types. Some even hold evil as an ideal in and of itself, committing bad acts for the sake of being bad. They enjoy being devoted to evil deities or secret societies.

SYBARITIC (CHAOTIC EVIL)

These characters do whatever his greed, hatred, and lust for destruction drive them to do. They are hot-tempered, vicious, arbitrarily violent, and unpredictable. When they are motivated to get whatever they can, they are ruthless and brutal. If they are committed to the spread of evil and chaos, they are even worse. Thankfully, their plans tend to be haphazard; any groups they join or form are usually poorly organized. They only work with others by force or necessity. They represent the destruction not only of beauty and life but also of the order on which beauty and life depend.

Favorite aspect of Harry Potter: The magic and the conflict that it causes in its wake. I read these books when I was still in grade school and the fact I can still read these books over as an adult and still have the same level of enjoyment from them.. I love it. Favorite Harry Potter character(s): Luna Lovegood, Jacob Kowalski, Narcissa Malfoy Favorite Harry Potter movie: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Favorite type of plots: Honestly…. -everything-, but I do have to admit I have a weak spot for mystery, sibling, and romantic plots.

If you’ve landed yourself here, you’re probably stumbled onto our Site Buzz! Welcome to Obliviatum’s tumblr! Pull up a chair and we’ll tell you a little bit more about our site, where we’re coming from, and where we hope to go from here.

Site Culture

We like to think of Obliviatum as a group of friends writing in the Harry Potter universe. We are not sticklers for the official canon but instead prefer to shape our own from the wonderful world that J.K. has shown us. We’ve changed dates, ages, and other content to this end. However, we still do maintain Rowling’s original rules of magic (I. E. magic can’t bring people back to life). For the out of character side of things, we prefer a community that is open and inclusive to everyone, with heavier topics usually recommended to be avoided so as not to cause any issues between members. We want people to feel comfortable being themselves while at the same time taking into account the feelings and thoughts of others.

Basis

Obliviatum is a dark take on the Potterverse. A world where there was no prophecy of the Chosen One who would stop the Dark Lord. Instead, young Harry Potter perished that dark October night in Godric’s Hollow along with Voldemort under just as mysterious circumstances as the original tale.

15 years have passed since the fall of Voldemort and the conclusion of his Wizarding War. We also advance the storyline 24 years forward in our history, so we can explore the muggle technological advancements and how they impact the magical world at large. Many canon favorites come into play alongside original characters to create an all-new course of events.

Would the events unfold the same or can history truly be altered?

We aim to explore the fallout from the events of the last Wizarding War, 15 years following. On top of that, we bring it into modern times, to explore the technological aspects and their effect on the Wizarding World that has largely remained the same over the years. This also allows many story favorites to be played in their prime. What would be the fallout from that? Would the same events come to pass? What would remain the same overall?

Our site is focused on the darker aspects of the Potterverse, with heavy emphasis on the adult characters and political intrigue that goes on behind the scenes at not just the Ministry, but in every aspect of life. We want the site to have this darker feeling, a more serious tone, while still maintaining the wonder, magic and fun of the Potterverse as a whole. This may come in the form of characters that choose definitive sides, or have a morally grey stance and aren’t swayed to the Dark Arts or to the defense of Muggleborns.

Worldbuilding

Obliviatum’s main focus is on worldbuilding. We seek to explore and expand upon the established world and lore in a realistic and natural way, as well as in cultivating and collaborating stories together. Thus, our approach to the site and its plots is to expand beyond just personal plots, also putting a heavy emphasis on the world at large. We encourage players to contribute and grow with us, to make the site into a place they had a hand in creating. This makes it not just something the staff put together, but something members can be proud of having helped with.

Characters

Both book canons and original characters are allowed to be created and played, with equal plot opportunities for both. We do have a canon list, but it is not an all inclusive listing, as there are so many families, we don’t want to bog it down. Some can be added or removed over time, to fill it out more and provide more character opportunities for members.

We’ve also taken a few creative liberties ourselves, such as some characters that were dead may be alive and others that were alive may have perished. While for a few others, they may be alive but not be able to be immediately played, but with story progression will eventually be opened to be played.

Political Intrigue

We explore the political intrigue that was touched on in the books. Pure-bloods are at odds with Half and Muggleborns. Voldemort’s followers are continuing on, not only in the name of their former master, but now also only for themselves. They twisted the political agenda in favor of pure-bloods, even managing to oust Albus Dumbledore from his perch at Hogwarts as muggleborn children were now refused entry, being forced to learn now at home. Rumors have begun to emerge that some of these children were disappearing by the Ministry’s own hand. In turn, the discourse caused in the wizarding community allowed a Muggleborn Minister for Magic to be elected. Now they’re seeking to unseat him.
