Stop Your Internal Dis Track
On August 8th & 9th at 6PM and August 10th at 5:30 PM you can join me live at Urevbu Contemporary to experience the delight of a good emotional scrub. Come ready to sweat.
The Call
This series is for you if:
You have recently noticed that you complain a lot…ALOT ALOT;
You have trouble enjoying your wins;
You would rather organize yourself around creativity, collaboration, and pleasure;
You care deeply about your peeps, but have conversation patterns that keep getting in the way.
I invite you to let it all go on the spiritual dance floor. Maybe get free of a few habits of mind that have you trapped in your poise. Let’s get loose. Let’s get deep in those sinews and pull out all the old stories that you tell to get that dose of Dissatisfaction that holds you down and back. Let’s become present to what is and discover the safety and power of joyful, radical acceptance.
The Offering
Usually here the coach or class leader will tell you how much value they are going to provide. Because this is as much a spiritual undertaking as it is a physical one, so I am going to tell you what you need to bring to and leave on the altar of transformation. You’ve got to give to get.
You will need to bring an open mind.
You will need to bring the willingness to be uncomfortable.
You will need to bring your attention.
You will need to bring your biggest bag of emotional garbage you keep dragging around.
You will need to bring that Tea Coat of Arms.
You will need to bring your Cloak of Dissatisfaction.
You will need to come prepared to sweat.
You will need to bring your go-to, multipurpose diss, beautifully written out on a nice piece of paper
You will need to bring any physical receipt that reminds you that you need to keep playing small.
The Preparation
It’s important to decide how many nights of the process you will engage.
Each evening is one hour in length, addressing a specific aspect of the way we create stories to justify hiding our shine under criticism. I have developed a full week long program, but for our first altar call in Memphis, I am offering three of them. Here they are.
Night 1: Imposter Syndrome
Let’s investigate releasing the need to send oddly worded email replies that require that your colleagues, clients and cheer squad decipher them. Let’s release the apologetic sigh “because you just can’t tonight” once again with your alleged squad. Let’s repair the urge to vanish behind a wall of to-do lists and calendar reminders. Let’s accept that we have nothing to prove to anyone.
Night 2: The Devil is in the Details, A SAH Method Session
This evening’s session might as well be called, I Ain’t Mad With You. Tonight we let go of needing an imaginary villain to fuel our success.
Night 3: Abandonment Issues, A SAH Method Session
As you have developed your techniques of practice and survival, you changed, and by necessity, so have some of the scenes and people that can be with your Genius. Maybe you went back to school or took a certificate program that had you buzzing with hope. Or maybe you took that big trip you were always talking about but not all the homies could go. This practice is designed to allow you to grieve your maturity while allowing you to accept the gifts that it brings if only we celebrate it.
Maybe they all speak to you or maybe there is one in particular that you would like to take. Know that each night, the classes build on each other, giving you the effect of an energetic deep scrub. This is the workout that will work you back into alignment with your destiny.
What is Somatic Activated Healing™?
Created by Sah DiSimone, the SAH Method™ is a movement experience designed to alleviate the stress and trauma of living in an extractive economy and culture. It is a radical, spiritual body technique that is practiced like interval training using movement, breathwork, meditation, affirmations, and ecstatic dance to create a circuit. A session can include as few as one circuit or as many as 5.
This radical wellness practice — championed by Deepak Chopra, and heralded in Forbes, Vogue, the Daily Mail, and more combines science-based healing modalities to clear emotional blocks, build resilience, and reconnect with your innate and powerful essence.
Our students consistently rave that the SAH Method™ offers profound psychological, physical, and spiritual benefits including:
Reduced depression and anxiety
Reduced physical pain and lethargy
Increased sense of resilience
Increased joy and inspiration
Improved physical health and energy
Improved mental health and clarity Deepened connection to authenticity and self-expression
What is involved?
Each session addresses a particular state of mind that prevents true acceptance of yourself as you are right now. At the start of each session, a brief introduction of the title and intention for the class will be given as you are invited to direct your attention inwards as we set our intention for the class. You will be guided through the combinations each session by a certified Somatic Activated Healing™ Coach. You are free to move at your own pace, take the class from a seated or prone position, and hydrate when necessary. We ask that you arrive at least 3 minutes before the session and wait to be admitted from the waiting room. Late arrivals can be distracting to others and detrimental to your health.
What will happen?
That’s entirely up to you and your body. In SAH Method™ we ask that people arrive with no expectations for an outcome, but that you drop the story and stay with the feeling. Typically, people experience muscular and emotional releases during a session. You can expect to sweat A LOT. A session is like interval training for your mindbodyspirit. There will be loud music and encouraging shouting and laughing from the instructor. Your muscles will get a workout. You will learn and use specific breathing techniques. You will be guided through ways to meditate that flow with your life. You will dance like no one is looking. You will change. We cannot control the change that occurs, only accept it.
Is there a dress code?
The invitation is to take the class in bare feet, but if you have foot issues you can wear athletic footwear that allows you to dance. This is key as many shoes prevent the foot from sliding and spinning, to prevent accidental slipping. Your body will be in charge of the moves you make, so dress accordingly. Be sure to take your clothing, hair, and jewelry out of the equation: if you are constantly having to pull up your pants or adjust your top, hair or jewelry, you will be too distracted to fully engage the sequences. You can serve a lewk (we love to see it), but make sure it is not in your way!
Ok, this sounds wild, I am in!
Great! To join us for all three nights the investment is $275. If you just want to try out one class, the cost is $100. Feeling generous? Pay it forward and provide a scholarship for someone who cannot mess with their cash flow at this time by registering at the $125 level! Scholarships will only be available at the level of the gift pool.
A Place for Joy LLC will hold 5% of your investments to donate to protect elder trees in our community.

Do I need to be a trained dancer?
Not at all! In fact, trained dancing--using choreography--is a type of storytelling that may get in the way of experiencing a full somatic release. You are invited to move however your body can move as long as you are respectful of the bodies and personal space of others.
What happens if I start crying?
You are invited to allow your tears to flow. This is a non-judgemental safe space. If you have the sense that you will become very emotional, bring your favorite blanket and pillow to swaddle and squeeze. It's gonna be alright.
Will there be food?
Light organic snacks and juice will be provided after each session. Please do NOT eat a large meal before a session.
Is this 420 friendly?
While all fantasies can be lived, we find that coming to a session with only the plant medicine or allopathic medication you require in your system is the best choice. Please do not light up as a way to go deeper in a session. The dancing, sweating, breathwork and music is designed to take you where your body needs to go.
Can I skip my therapy that day and do this instead?
Somatic Activated Healing is NOT a substitution for psychological and psychiatric treatment. While we do believe the body has the power to heal itself, it does so in community, with the trained support of an array of providers.
Can I just sit and watch?
Short answer, no. This is a participatory, communal experience anchored in trauma-informed delivery and practice. Having an audience is simply not cool.
I'm feeling a little sweaty and stuffed up. Can I still come and sweat it out?
Alas my love, the days of sweating it out because it's just a cold or flu are long gone. If you feel under the weather, please stay home and take a COVID test. Be safe!
What do I need to bring?
You will need to wear comfortable clothes for sweating and moving.
Bring sneakers for dancing in case the floor bothers your feet.
Sweat towel
Refillable water bottle
Blanket or wrap
Pillow
Yoga Mat
A change of clothes if you sweat a lot and...
You will need to bring an open mind.
You will need to bring the willingness to be uncomfortable.
You will need to bring your attention.
You will need to bring your biggest bag of emotional garbage you keep dragging around.
You will need to bring your Cloak of Dissatisfaction.
You will need to come prepared to sweat.
You will need to bring your go-to, multipurpose dis, beautifully written out on a nice piece of paper
You will need to bring any physical object that reminds you that you need to keep playing small…cause you don’t.

Dancing until the Way is Clear
I cannot believe it has been so many years since my last post. Looking back, however, it makes perfect sense. I was so engaged with having my art be my life while attempting to recover my spark from an impossible employment situation (that unfortunately provided hours of laughter) that I set aside few, if any hours to document what was happening. And if you know me, you know that when I’m in a perfect storm like that, I find its eye and hunker down to…study.
And I did! You might have noticed the extra sections here on the website about Somatic Activated Healing™. I received my certification in 2022 and have been in service to healing the world through dance ever sice. Don’t get me wrong. I been done been doin dat! This time I do it with a full sense that I am authorized to go forth. For many of us Gen Xers in tradional arts, we would be the erstwhile culture bearer, but our elders and/or mentors are still around living from the fruits of their labor OR, COVID took them before we felt we were fully annointed to walk through th eotherside of the gates, back into community, carrying the sacred bundle. Kinda frustrating.
Now we find ourselves looking for classes to take or a studio to use and there is no longer an acceptance that beocming better in order to great things requires repetition, humbleness, and time. People want to work less, sleep less, weigh less, pay less, save the environment while traveling more, shopping more (hiding that fact from themselves by doing it mostly online), drinking and eating more. They want to be paid a living wage but want to be waited on hand and foot at a discount. In this climate, getting people to bring their earthsuits to a dance class just for the feeling of being there can become tricky business. With this SAH Method™ certification, I can meet you in your lving room via Zoom.
The irony is that I stumbled into the Method because I was looking for a way to address the trauma in the bodies of people I wanted to interview during ART+FACT, a National Performance Network-funded project I helmed twice with my homies, The Earthseed Collective, in Holly Springs, Mississippi. It was great becoming a Southern Artist for Social Change, but it was almost impossible to get to activation phase because of the terror still alive in the memory and flesh of residents of that town. We were looking at 1973 to understand how our parents dreamed the present we were living in 2023 to then create the dreamscape necessary for 2073. Intentionality was going to be supported by deep listening, songs, drums, and dance…except people would come to watch the outdoor West African dance class from the safety of their cars.
In 1973 my little town integrated their public school system during Christmas break, sending a terse letter out to white families that the local high school had no. choice in the matter because “seperate but equal” could not be proven in the district. That Christmas, white separatists and supremacists spent the holiday erecting what became known as ‘seg academies’ all over the region. The parent meeting, rallies and fights that made that moment happen had left their mark in the collective imagination of all. Additionally, white networks of surveillance went underground, but continued to keep tabs on Black and Indigenous people. So while I COULD give an African dance class on the courtyard with live drums, I could also find doors closed in fear, interviews for the podcast cancelled, and local news outlets pretending to have not received our press releases.
We had super cool shit planned for the performance part that woud have accured after the memory and object collection phase. In fact, I just managed to get a Mississippi Art Comission grant to make the crockpot tietravel devices FINALLY. I feel odd because my collaborator had to close their business because the building was sold out from under them….that’s for another post.
So I still practice Somatic Activated Healing™. If I didn’t, I might honestly be dead or at least have had a massive heart attack by now. Getting my unexpressed emotions out, learning to stop giving meaning to every little feeling, and practicing dropping the story and staying with the feeling has radicalized me in wild, wonderful ways. Teaching it as acting technique alongside Stanislavski technique fueled me intellectually as well as psychologically. Giving a session in a corporate environment to groups who are struggling to find their way through tumultuous transformations in the way we do business has been a masterclass. Last November I spearheaded the first World SAH Day experience, showcasing 24 hrs of sessions by certified teachers around the globe via the Lyceum at Rust College. Now I’m launching a business to cultivate a sacred, sovereign space for cultivating imagination, genius, and joy; SAH Method™ is an integral part of this endeavor.
On August 8, 9, and 10 I will have a live offering each evening at Urevbu Contemporary as a soft launch to A Place for Joy LLC. It’s feeling anything but soft. While tickets are available at Eventbrite and Luma, I’m out here in these streets meeting people, introducing them to the Method and the biz, hoping to see them in person on at least one fo those nights. Yes, entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. But I have every faith that those who have been searching for the one thing that would make all the difference will arrive through the doors of this beautiful gallery and get their entire life.
Maybe you will be one of them.

Sweaty Soulful Saturday
I Just Realized I'm DEFENSIVELY GREGARIOUS and now I low-key hate myself.
It seemed like it was time to get ready for the summer of a lifetime, like, forget COVID and monkey butts, and what is soft quitting and OMG the tours have started again!! Yessssss my lovely. We went off to the races and our bodies were like, “HOLD UP. WAIT. A. WHOLE. MINNIT” But we outchere and tired. TIZZIRED of trying to be social and happy, and into self-care, and trauma informed AND witty…
No wonder you just want to sit down by yourself and get a whole grip.
We did discover during the shut downs, thought], that we are social animals and healing especially is a communal act..
So this Satuday is your invitation to stop running around lying to everybody that you're “fine,” “all gud,” “keeping it movin,” “can't complain,” and a new favorite, “blessed and highly favored” as you limp from social engagement to social engagement.
Rather than wait for your body to burst open like an old threadbare pair of pants, we gonna make some public admissions--in community of course--then we gonna dance through the issues in our tissues. We're going to feel the feels so that they can go on about their business and we can get back to living a peaceful, joyful life. OKAAAAY?!?

Join Me at the Well @ Acorn Center For Restoration and Freedom
So excited to offer to the community a 2 part virtual retreat this Spring in partnership with a community that I admire dearly. Acorn Center for Restoration and Freedom is committed
Feel Beyond the Surface
As part of their commitment to abolition and justice The Well™ puts healing at the center of justice by creating opportunities for individuals, communities, collectives, and movements to integrate healing practices to help replenish, restore, and be sustainable. I hope to create a portal through which we can access our joy.
RENEWAL: READY TO RECEIVE THE BLESSINGS is 90 minute experience anchored by a 60 minute Somatic Activated Healing™
Just at the edge of release, of an ending is the opportunity for renewal. Frequently we assume that a new beginning is automatically granted once we have stopped an interaction, a project, or a relationship, but we must choose the new route. Letting go of the familiar to dive head first into the blessed, unfettered Unknown, our renewal only arrives if we are able to let go of our old narrative and its emotional concoctions. This 2 part Somatic Activated Healing™ experience will provide a safe and joyful space to move, shout, breathe and dance our fully into the Clearing, the Cypher. SAH Method ™️ is a healing modality that integrates Breathwork, meditation, affirmations, special movement, and dancing. The sessions help people release unexpressed emotions that are causing them psychological, physical (and often social) harm.

From my Sole
For the last 4 years I have been primarily dancing in my house, well before COVID, and especially during it. Thankfully I’ve had a few wonderful opportunities to create communal dance experiences in Holly Springs, MS since 2021, mostly outside. What I am learning is that the dance is unstoppable. It will always come find me. It will always reach around and snap my bodymind to attention and command me to take the floor.
I’ve leaned about leadership.
That is what taking a solo is all about. Making contact with the floor, the ground, sliding your sole across the surface, unaware of the next move that will select you is training for servant-leadership. It is never-ending. Ultimately, I’ve become a gerund, a suffix, -ing. Unwavering in my desire to express and share the joy that dance and kinetic thinking bring into my life.
Things are very good. Good and juicy!
Keep moving. When in doubt, dance, for real for real.

L A D I E S!!
Ready to shake loose from those mental shackles on your feet? Your heart? Your soul?
Miriam Höschele on Unsplash">
It's an all day affair designed to liberate us from limiting thoughts, habits, and actions.
We will fellowship on the dance floor, write in your gifted journal, heal, dance some more and have 3 delicious catered meals together. The day is supported by a DJ, vendors, movement, health and meditation instructors.
I am so happy and excited to offer this experience! If you’ve ever seen me on the dance floor at a party or in the club and wondered where all that energy and “freeness” comes from, this is your chance to find out and learn how to access it for yourself.
Our day begins in the morning with sign in, health shake, receiving your journal, introductions, and a dance walk. After a delicious lunch, we’ll break into groups to practice dreamwork as team work. A boogie break will lead us into an movement and mantra exploration. Dinner, DJ and vendors round out the very full and lovely day! Are you ready?

I'm in Flow/Obstruction at the Collaborative in Long Beach
River spirits of abundance meet capital investment through the Fibonacci sequence to investigate the obstructing force of overabundance in the absence of critical policy guidance.
What happens when artists and their creative energy are navigated like a river by developers? If the L.A. River barely fills its bed, what’s wrong with it being an actual bed for the unhoused?
For the past few weeks I've been building in a performance installation in a gallery. We opened with blank walls on June 6th and will close with completed works on August 2nd. It's rad, wobbly, invigorating, a tad scary process-driven project.
My section is entitled, she dances until the water is clear. I named it before I got going in response to the brief that the curator shared with us. Since I am such a research-driven performer, my ideas have shifted considerably on the project--cleaning/freeing the LA river as an act of gentrification--to more of an investigation of shared root metaphors of finance, wealth, investment and spiritual elevation found in the way we speak of water acts, rivers, and other waterways. I arrived at this moment because "winners and losers" was not a great prompt for a score. Also, riding in that particular stream of lack consciousness is antithetical to the river deities whose dances form the basis of the movement vocabulary I am sourcing: Yemojá, Oxum, Iansã, Ajé, Logun Ede, Ewa & Oba. All of these are different aspects of water, each with the message of prosperity and wealth brought in their own distinct way. I might even add in Nana!
I suppose the name that might be arriving for this work is that there are multiple names! There are at least three distinct works going on. I'm not sure if all will arrive into a compelted enough state by Aug 2nd. I'm building in the storage closet (sorry, no spoilers); I've been grabbing Google Cardboard photos of construction sites and dancers in gallery (need 4 Samsung S5s for viewing if you have one you'd like to donate); there's the choreo that will likely have AR elements on bodies ond costumes; there was an AR experience for the structure, but I think I want it to be ont he bodies, then I'll post on structures after first performance. Whew!
I need cash, really and truly. The irony is that I have just scored a CAC grant for another project next year! This gallery opportunity came to me unexpectedly, so I was off cycle for raising funds via grants and discretionary funds (tried a few longshots that are easier when you are a not-for-profit). How much do I need? $10,000 to cover artist salaries, costume designer & costumes; set designer and fabricator; set and costume materials; devices if I can't get them donated; data analysis research tool; my own fee so I don't get evicted. That last one is sooooo real. I'd like to be able to have critical distance from the topic I'm making art about, so staying off the street--or out of a hotel which is more my stylee--is super important to me.
If you'd like to support this work, you can make a donation right here right now. An Indie GoGo page is in the works for this project, but you know, asking for myself is typically not my style. I love making money for other artists and double love giving them money AND I am super excited when I receive some for my own work! See that? That was a reframe!
I'll post some of my notes from my Google Keep as entries here now that I am in the home stretch. And be on the look out for a Patreon for me in the very near future! Having patrons rather than clients makes spreading the awesome that much easier.

Hey, You Got Your Biz Dev in My Lifestyle!
Whether you’re running Lean or sprinting with Agile, turning the corner successfully on a big project can bring huge disappointment, especially if you didn’t plan for it. You know what I’m talking about. Stop pretending that you don’t. You’ve been awake for practically a month--3 hours here, 5 hours of sleep there. There are white boards and sticky notes covering the walls like trellises in some mad hatter indoor garden. You did it! You ran those reports, watched the data, re-read that manuscript and looked at the calendar, shocked. You shipped. But now you feel like crap on a stick...after it has been scraped off a shoe. You may have practiced the Pomodoro technique while you hustled, programmed your desktop to lock you out of your favorite social media site, made running reminders in Wunderlist, outlines in Asana, tasks in Trello, and publication budgets in Basecamp. You were organized, and you still had to rush at the end. You still skipped breakfast, the potty, the hug. You slipped out on life. You created a moment in time, with a new mantra: “When I get done with x, I will finally do y.” Now you’re done and there is no way to go and do y. Y moved on. Y lost its glamor. Seth Godin calls it the Lizard: the fear you must face to ship. Sheryl Sandberg tells women “to lean in,” to push through the challenges to get that C room office. Steve Blank wants you to understand and accept that you are questing from failure to failure in search of a biz model that is productive. Creativity hackers tell you to trick your resistant self with games, breaks, inversions and reward yourself for each small success. There’s a lot of force here, quite a bit of elegant faking it to you make it, and a lot of success. Most of it works. So why then does it suck so much? When I Grow Up Completing any large project is like going through an initiation. You just joined the DONE Club (Definitely Over, Now Escape). Now that you are done, what are you gonna do now? In the 1990s, Mickey wanted you to come and kick it with him at Disneyland. These days, your boss (who is likely the loudmouth in your head) wants you to be vigilant and watch the metrics. Look for the bounce. Check the spin. Mind the funnel. But you are DONE. You are so done, that you are now sick, or paralyzed at your desk with confusion seasoned with just a twinge of terror. “What comes next,” reverberates in your brain, but that ache in your chest is asking, “Who am I NOW?”

You crossed the Rubicon. You walked the coals. You moved heaven and earth. Now you are new. You get a natural do-over, because every admission to the DONE Club is a free pass into Started It Land. And once there, you can choose to keep starting anything that you already put in motion while you sprinted to the finish line. These are usually projects that diverge wildly from the initial scope/goal/target. This is where your opportunity to dazzle yourself is the greatest. You can take control of the terms of your DONE Club membership. It’s Definitely Over, but Now Evolve. Float Like A Butterfly One of the most common errors in planning a major overhaul, pivot, or undertaking is neglecting to chart time for emotional needs. There’s quite a bit more to your human experience than eating, sleeping, and, um letting out the garbage. Even though organizations like Google, Apple, and Netflix recognize the need to treat workers better by providing opportunities to “own” a project or even to rest when the need arises, there is still a pressure to optimize your life so that it fits into work. Each massive project, however, is extraordinary labor by definition: the tasks required to complete them are often unknown, the workflow is improvisational and frankly, the goal posts move, a lot! In this situation, charting the life flow along with the workflow over time ensures sustainable and enjoyable performance for everyone involved. Jumping on the canvas, getting into the scrum, clearing the desk, pulling out the deck of innovation cards are externalized ways to go deep within and invite genius out. Whether alone or as part of a team, you are headed into a cocoon. Honor that.
This is a cyclical process, not a mad dash to a finish line. And you are taking your entire life into the husk and rewiring it accordingly. If you want to come out looking snazzy and brilliant, chart the impact of the project on all aspects of your life. Doing so will allow you to move with determination towards shipping because you will know what happens after you enter the DONE Club. Beginning in any other way will almost always lead to an exhausting fight with your Lizard, Shadow, Inner Critic, or whatever colorful name you’ve given to your private emotional highjacker. Change is inevitable, almost haphazard. Transformation is guided. Evolution is natural, but it is your choice: fight to the finish, or float into the next phase.
