Sometimes, she couldn’t help feeling sad as she stared at the setting sun over the top of Mt Chimney. She was the last of her people, a being denied the life she should have had filled with love and family because she’d been sealed away alongside Kyogre and Groudon ages ago.
Hanging her head, the priestess sighed, offering up a prayer to the souls of everyone who passed.

There’s a moment of pause, following her voice, before he lifts his bow and follows along.
It’s a familiar song, that one. Some of his mother’s helpers used to sing a tune like it when they played out their Tribe’s origin, the split from sealife that gave them legs (and the betrayal of those who lead them, loving the land more than they loved the sea). It was triumphant, powerful, sad; it called for many strings and stomping, and a man upon his drums as he would circle the woman chosen to play Groudon’s Priestess with heavy, thudding steps.
(He wonders, briefly but not for the first time, how true that story was.)
And so his feet move him to match that tune, steps that encircle and twist; his Father said it wasn’t a good idea to move when he played, lest he distort the sound, but it flowed better when he moved. Like how the sea was quiet, lest it had something to crash upon.
It’s a distinctly oceanic dance that he follows; something that ebbs and flows (pulled back and forth), a step forward and one back (like the tide), twisting to fill the spaces presented. He hopes it’s not anything that overshadows her own steps, because he never did learn how to dance with the Earth half of this dance.
This was very different from the song she once heard. However, it still rang with the aching familiarity of the past with each note played. Movement soon became part of the melody and she realized he was dancing. Ryou never did that and when she would start to flit along to the music, she melody moved with her as his proxy. He could not dance on land like she did, but by the gods, did he make it so the music wrapped her up in his place.
It was surreal, almost, seeing a dance to this music. The stomping and powerful movements she used to be known for, integrated into this song the ancient Herald of Kyogre made in honour of their bond. While perhaps the story had been distorted as time went on, Lau’hua understood its meaning.

She followed his lead, never touching, but always near, with red silk billowing behind her as she did. Though she represented the land, her steps were light and well timed to complement his own just as her voice shifted to harmonize with his violin.  The joyous land at last meeting the sea. As the story should have been told, before it became corrupted with misunderstanding.
After all, it was not the priestess that drew the water people in to land, but the water prince who pulled the priestess out to sea.

“I assume that the word ‘Lau’ means one, then? Forgive me if I am getting this wrong, I am trying to learn, after all.”
Tumblr media
She bowed her head in acknowledgement. “Yes, it is one meaning amongst others for ‘Lau’. When placed with another word it becomes the word known as ‘one’. For example, I may refer to you as Lau’maki, which may be taken as ‘mountainous one’ or ‘strong one’.”

“Well, ‘t ain’t a modern instrument by any means. ‘s a old western thing. Me Pa gave me ‘t when I was younger, pro’lly t’ bond us or whatever.”
Pa’d joked about it too, commenting on their shared name (Archer, a bowman with no bow), and said a violin’s bow would make more of a impression in the world than a hunter’s.
He tightens a string up top and checks the chalk on his bow, casting the fair, landly-lady a bright, sea-worthy smile. “Y’got any requests? Most’v the old stuff I know ‘s oceanic, I know, but maybe there’s a few shared tunes somewhere in thar.”
...Oceanic? When Lau’hua slowly deciphered exactly what he meant, the priestess immediately started to beam at him, eyes aglow in bright magma. Clasping her hands together in a pleading manner, she already knew what to request.
“Oh, there is one! Ryou used to play it for me before. I do not know the name, but I remember the tune.” Perhaps some part of the past could be reclaimed. If only for a bit. Taking a breath, she vocalized an ancient tune, a song that somehow also made it to this day and age. However, while the Herald of Kyogre knew the tune well, it was not one originally passed within his tribe until after his death, as it told a story.

The song of the Distant Sea and the Holy Land.
