I don't think a lot, but sometimes I do. That's where the magic happens.

I was thinking last night that the reason the Bakuras work so well (as characters and the dynamic between them) is because of how much they play with contrast. It helps them stand out & be compelling in a crowd of standout, compelling characters.
Ryou is a very lonely person when compared to his friend group. They’ve all had each other seemingly since they were little kids, but Ryou, for multiple reasons, is largely alone. Yami Bakura, fascinatingly, shares Yami Yugi’s role as a protector, but while Yami Yugi is driven by an appreciation for Yugi, Yami Bakura is primarily motivated by a need for a physical body (I do think he cares about Ryou, but that’s a separate post if I ever write it). That right there is a bright contrast.
Ryou contrasts with himself. His appearance and manner of speaking are very pleasing, polite, and innocent, but he shows a fondness for grotesque cards that everyone else finds ugly, scary, or weird.
Ryou and Bakura also contrast with each other quite well. Ryou loves his friends and is willing to literally die for them, but Bakura doesn’t seem to care for much of anything except himself, Ryou, and the millenium items. And maybe Marik/Malik. And even then, I doubt he’d put his life on the line for anything on that list. This contrast btw is one of the things that make tendershipping so appealing.
Then, design. Ryou is drawn noticeably more feminine than other male characters his age (especially Joey, Tristan, Kaiba and maybe excepting Marik/Malik) and this is very prevalent in the eye differences. It’s an appealing design choice, yes, but it also adds contrast, which is what this post is all about. The stark white hair shared by all the Bakuras serves to set them apart as well.
I might add more thoughts on this later, who knows.
