Romana turned with a start to whoever had just addressed her like that, half indignant and half curious as to who this person was and why they were in the house.
❝ I do beg your pardon - ❞ She started in a bit of a harsh, haughty tone, having full mind to see exactly who he thought he was talking to when she realised who he was.
This was the correct house, yes. The correct man? Well, technically. She’d gotten something wrong - not just the time, or else the place, but some other anomaly of the causal nexus. This was Johnny, yes, but not her Johnny. A Johnny of another place, another time. She supposed that was what had made her a bit nauseous for a moment upon leaving the ship, feeling the change without quite realising what it was. With a start, a hypothesis began forming.
❝ I suppose, then, you don’t recognise me. ❞ She stated instead of asked, her tone more fragile and soft than it was before. He’d not yet turned to her, but she already knew she was right.

He heard the door open, and he let out a groan of annoyance as he lay on the sofa, his penthouse suite was a mess, but that didn’t mean he needed it cleaned. His mouth was parched, he wanted a drink — and there wasn’t one in reach.
So he barked at the figure who’d entered the room without looking back.
“—- I didn’t hire a cleaner for today, if you don’t mind sodding off. I’m nursing a hangover. I don’t mean to be disturbed.”

Onward the Doctor went, the cold crawling into his bones. He dwelt less and less upon the peculiar presence he’d sensed earlier - and even less on the anomaly he’d come to find in the first place. All he could do was wish he’d brought along his nice fur coat, and focus on the last notion he’d had - that for some reason or another, he ought to continue on until he reached the outpost. Nothing else mattered.
It wasn’t long before he lost feeling in his fingers and toes. Curious, really. He dare not think what this cold would do to a human being, if it had such effects on a time lord.
Had anyone passed this way before him, all traces were soon lost to the wind. But something - something again felt familiar. Stronger, now. To his numb mind, it seemed rational to follow it instead, forgetting the outpost itself until its shape loomed large up ahead. He began to feel warm and sleepy and content in spite of the cold - and imagining the building to be a large crab squatting alone in the vast white landscape made him quite giggly.
Soon, the grey walls of the outpost became more solid and the Doctor reached out to touch the smooth surface. “Good morning!” he said to the crab, and patted its shell fondly. At a loss as to what he’d intended to do now that he’d arrived, the Doctor idly followed the perimeter of the building until he came across the partially-opened door.
The metal was cold - but the snow around it had been moved too recently for it to have been ajar long. That this indicated the presence of another person barely registered, and the Doctor squeezed inside.
The interior was dark and windowless, long since abandoned, but it was warmer in here without the wind, and the Doctor’s senses quietly began to defrost. He dimly explored the room, little by little remembering what it was he came here for, remembering that he ought not to stop and take the nap he so wished for. Keep walking. Walk around. The Doctor rubbed his hands together and blew on them, and tried his best to warm up enough to go exploring.
Tumblr media
It was pitiable, really, how slowly she was able to move. Even in the relative shelter of four walls, the outpost was nearly as cold as the outside. The only thing allowing her mind to defrost a bit was the fact that the wind was no longer a factor. She put a hand back against the wall to keep steady, despite how it felt as though her fingers were growing frost. Whether they were or not was difficult to determine, as she was too busy focusing on where she was going to keep a check on much else.
That was, until it came back.
Romana stopped mid stride and nearly fell over when the presence she’d sensed was suddenly much more apparent again, likely from proximity. Another Gallifreyan was somewhere nearby, and Romana was unsure as to whether to try and find them or to keep walking around. On one hand, it would likely be good to have someone else around when she was half to the wind. On the other hand, she was unable to recognise which Gallifreyan was nearby, if it was even one she knew. That, and after she hadn’t come back from her escapades with the Doctor, she was somewhat unsure of her standing with them at the moment.
After some deliberation, Romana gave a shuddery start and kept walking in the direction she had already been going in. Moving slowly, she didn’t actually have much of an idea of where the other person was - they could have been right behind her and she’d have no idea without them making any fuss. Her hearing, her sense of smell, everything was strained and dulled in the extreme cold. It didn’t help that there was still snow on her, but she hadn’t really realised it.
Romana simply trudged on, slowly edging closer to the anomaly.

If there was heaven, this was it. He couldn’t imagine how else this evening could have gone. He was expecting to go back to the tour bus, back with the supporting tour, back on the bus to the next town over. To ring his mother in the morning at the hotel he was due to get to and tell her the gig went well and that would be that.
But now, now something was happening, forces that were out of his control, he didn’t know if that was because of her or the alcohol, but it was good, whatever it was.
He finds himself laughing, as she looked at him, he felt lost, he felt something he didn’t know he could feel about a person, in these moments, it felt like this was the way he felt when he played music, like his soul was on display.
Perhaps he was more romantic than he originally thought. “Then we should go to Vegas,” he tells her, “we can go get married in Vegas like one of those old country songs.”
It’s almost a joke, his hand still around her. Even the barman had had enough now, the bell behind them rings for last call. “And now we have to go before we get kicked out, so….Vegas? How does that sound?”
Tumblr media
Hmm. Well. Vegas was clearly an Earth location, and marriage appeared to be some kind of... bonding ritual. A way to get closer, it seemed. Well, Romana reasoned, how bad could it possibly be?
Someonething was overriding her logical sense.
❝ Vegas sounds appropriate, ❞ She decided, not catching the look of incredulity from the barkeep, ❝ I shall take us there, and we can... do that. Come along. ❞ While she hadn’t been able to glean what marriage was or what she was about to get into, she had noticed that it was time to get out of the bar before Johnny had clued her into it. Romana reached into her purse and pulled out a large wad of money, paying for her tab with a generous tip. The barkeep stared with wide eyes, stumbling through a thank you as she nodded and turned back to Johnny as if such an amount was no big deal.
She stood, helping Johnny to stand with her. If necessary, she’d be able to carry him with ease. ❝ Can you walk, darling? Here, lean on me. We can take my TA- vehicle. And don’t forget to pay your tab. ❞

Tumblr media
It was foolish on both sides. Johnny didn’t know exactly what he was getting into, but he didn’t much care this point with all the alcohol in his system. Honestly, she’d called him darling and he had melted in her touch like butter.
“Yes.” He breathed, as he gently presses a kiss to her cheek. “Yes I’d like that. Steal me away from here…” His eyes were glazed, drunk with more than just his alcohol at this point, gently fingers giving her chin a tug. “I’d like to wager that you could give me the best night of my life, judging on a kiss alone. Then then of course, there’s marriage, and babies, so maybe more than just a night…” He’s babbling because the drink has finally hit him, perhaps it’s the heat on his neck from the kiss, or the fact he’s lost in her eyes, most coherent thought is lost, and there’s just her at the edge of his rational thought and that thought is what keeps him from tipping into the void. “Don’t you like the sound of that?”
Tumblr media
Orange tinged Romana’s cheeks at the gentle gesture, something about the way he was talking making her feel... strange. All of her thoughts of leaving that night had disappeared without trace or further consideration; his voice was temptation enough to stay.
At least for a little while.
She listened with slightly lidded eyes as words tumbled blithely from liquor lips. She wasn’t so sure about the best night of his life, and even more unsure about what came after - Romana had only abstract concepts of what marriage and babies were, and the implication of the statement as a whole went right over her head. Usually, that would dissuade her, but... Romana was curious.
❝ The best night of your life? ❞ Romana asked, inquisitive and smiling. ❝ I don’t know about that, but... ❞ Her thumb gently stroked his cheek, head tilting slightly to the side as she tried unsuccessfully to search glassy eyes. Romana had no idea what he meant or what he was thinking, but she couldn’t help it.
❝ Yes. I like the sound of it. ❞

Dorrie runs up to Romana, bouncing and squeaking, "HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY NEW YEAR!" She tugs on her sleeve until she bends down enough to let Dorrie kiss her on the cheek, and then explains just in case her new space mum doesn't understand, "On New Year's you're s'posed t' kiss someone!"
Tumblr media
❝ Oh! ❞ Romana reacted with a bit of surprise, but soon it gave way to a grin as Dorothy explained. ❝ Oh, yes, I see, ❞ She said with mock seriousness,❝ Then I shall have to kiss someone as well. ❞ Romana, still bent to Dorrie-height, kissed her on the cheek before chuckling and wrapping her up in a hug. The smile she had been barely managing to repress became quite apparent.
❝ A new year on Earth, hmm? Well, how else shall we celebrate? ❞

What a strange expression the girl wore. As if pleased to see her. It truly was an absurd thought to her, after all, while many could appreciate her intelligence and her work, her methods and lack of any morality what so ever drove those few to steer clear of her. Which was just as well for her. It was not about fame for The Rani, but for science that she did what she did.
“Not an unnatural or unreasonable response.” A curt nod is offered as if accepting the explanation given. “If it is successful, yes. Both fortunately and unfortunately, this project is quite a bit more difficult than I had expected it to be. As such, the success will be all the more delightful.” Rarely did the Rani get the opportunity to discuss her work and she was in a rare pleasant mood. “You are familiar with regeneration, yes? That Time Lords loomed as a female the first time have more control over their regenerations?”
Tumblr media
Romana nodded in response, understanding the appeal of difficult experiments. Exercising the mind was always pleasant, and difficult experiments were more rewarding when successful. ❝ Oh yes, I agree. ❞ She said with an understanding raising of the eyebrows, glancing again at the experiment. ❝ Well, partially. They didn’t tell us too much about the specifics, but I’m familiar with the concept and the advantage. This is my first incarnation, so I was curious. ❞ Her head tilted slightly as she looked up at the Rani, expression and mannerisms making it clear of her interest and rapt attention.
❝ Are you working on something relating to regeneration? ❞ Romana had always had a sort of feeling that she’d be very in control of her first regeneration, when it came to it, but she hoped that wasn’t going to be too soon. Of course, considering what trouble she got into off of Gallifrey, it might be sooner than she may have planned. ❝ I tried very preliminary experiments, but the Academy didn’t like that much, so I didn’t learn very much. A pity, really. ❞

Oh, what a place for an outpost! The Doctor scrubbed his face with a red handkerchief, his coat slung over his shoulder and his sleeves rolled up, the heavy heat pressing down and squeezing moisture up from the hardy foliage —- no small wonder this outpost had been abandoned!
But it wasn’t only that fact which drew his curiosity to this planet. People talked about apresence they felt here, something very old, something powerful – an anomaly that altogether defied more thorough explanation – people had gone quite mad simply trying to describe it.
How could the Doctor possibly resist?
But what he hadn’t anticipated was the TARDIS’ extreme aversion to the place – and the ensuing long, hot slog through the low jungle. That was one thing about Rython that certainly lived up to legend – its extremely unstable weather patterns made for difficult land conditions. When it had been an outpost, of course, there’d been no need to traverse its surface on foot.
Question was… Did this anomaly have anything to do with the remains of the outpost itself?
The Doctor paused for a moment, leaning against the husk of a twisted tree to shuck his shoes off with a small groan. How much hotter, exactly, was this place about to get? It was one of those times to be grateful for a respiratory bypass system – he’d stopped bothering to breathe a few miles back, when it’d become like gulping water from a fishbowl.
Something tickled in his mind.
At first, he dismissed it as the beginnings of hallucination and concentrated his efforts on moving forward, moving forward – another step forward, you silly old Doctor! Even now, he knew the conditions would only worsen if he stayed put.
But still, the sensation continued, a presence – the anomaly…? No, no… it was all too familiar for that. In spite of the heat, he felt himself go cold.
The time lords.
The time lords were here! They were here with him, right on this very planet – they had found him. And he had no doubts when it came to what they might do about that.
If he hadn’t been motivated to move forward before, he certainly was now.
As he went, he felt the presence go stronger - - difficult to say, exactly, the direction from which it came, whether it was approaching him or he was approaching it, but he had hardly a choice as the brush grew less dense and the air very quickly began to cool. If he was going to stand any chance of escape, he needed to recover a little first.
Rest would have to wait. Rython’s merciless weather was taking a turn for chills, an icy wind cutting and hissing as it collided with the steaming underbrush. Snow. Wearily, the Doctor wrapped his coat about him, his breath already rising in little clouds.
His mind began to clear with the weather.
Perhaps, he thought, there was a small chance that it wasn’t the time lords after all – but a single time lord. Wilder yet, perhaps it was, in fact, a single Gallifreyan, way out here among the furthest reaches of the universe.
Perhaps it was worth a little looking into.
Tumblr media
The cold was really starting to get to her. Any tint of warmth to her was gone as she continued to trudge and stumble through the snow, which was getting more difficult as it piled up. Cold had never affected her like this before - it was certainly drastic. Snow on places like Earth was never so intensely cold to make her start to feel physical pain from the cold - if it was like this on Earth, the humans would have been dead about a hundred degrees warmer. That was her estimate, anyhow, but she’d be the first to admit her knowledge of humans was limited.
As the cold had numbed her body, it started to do something similar to her mind, and she lost focus on the Gallifreyan nearby to her. She focused just on the outpost, whose odd anomaly was enough that she didn’t really have to focus on it to still be able to sense it. Perhaps it would be warmer there. At least she’d be out of the wind, which was cutting through her like a blade through paper. Fingers clawed at her cloak and she tried to go a bit faster, but it was hard to drag herself at any sort of decent speed with the cold numbing her and the wind pushing against her.
Eventually, she reached the outpost, or at least part of it - it appeared to be a series of buildings connected by interior tunnels. She wandered around for a bit with her hand on the concrete, until she was able to locate a door. Romana tried unsuccessfully to pry it open, pulling until she used enough strength to rip it open and cause herself to fall backwards. With great effort, she pulled herself out of the snow, stumbling inside. She was only able to close the door part of the way, leaning against the interior wall and sliding down to the ground.
Romana stayed put and rested for a while, just waiting to regain feeling. She wasn’t sure how long she stayed there like that - just that she got up when she could sense her limbs again. Romana was still unmistakably cold, snow clinging to her hair and clothing without melting, but now she could head closer to the anomaly, which she guessed was likely somewhere in the middle of the outpost. She began through the interconnecting hallways of the outpost, heading in a roundabout way towards the centre.

“No?” That was quite the surprise. When she didn’t want to be found, The Rani wasn’t found. But that hadn’t stopped the Council from trying before to track her. She was the greatest scientific mind that Gallifrey had ever seen. But like all cast outs, she’d had something ‘wrong’. In this case, her lack of morals.
The Rani’s boots hit the first level floor and she tilted her head slightly, observing the reaction given to her. “I see. I suppose that is not unreasonable.” She acknowledges after a moment of thought. “None ever do these days.” Yet there seemed to be excitement radiating from the girl? It was an absurd thought and yet all the signs were there. “The Council rarely can for ANYONE.” She agreed.
Tumblr media
A passive nod; she wasn’t lying, and that much was likely obvious to a degree. ❝ Certainly not an unpleasant surprise. ❞ Romana stated idly, glancing about the place before warm eyes returned to look at the Rani again. There was a small, unconscious smile on her face, and a look of - mostly masked - affection.
❝ I am sorry to have intruded, of course, if you didn’t want to be bothered. I was just curious, you see. ❞ She said apologetically, perfectly willing to leave against her own personal wishes if the Rani would prefer it. ❝ Are you working on a project here? Another scientific breakthrough, I’m sure? ❞ Romana was certainly confident in the Rani’s scientific abilities, looking about the place in quick glance, as if trying to infer what could be going on. ❝ Not to pry, of course, if you don’t want to talk about it. ❞

It had been a long time since Dorothy had been picked up for anything that didn’t mean she wasn’t about to be beaten up. She instinctively stiffened, but when Romana didn’t try to hurt her and just kept on explaining stuff she relaxed. “I’d love t’ learn how t’ fly a spaceship. Then I really could be an astronaut.”
She would’ve preferred if she could’ve flipped a cooler switch, maybe one that fired space guns or at least the button that would start the engines, but she settled for flipping the light switch on and off idly. “How come you can still see in th’ dark? Do you have heat vision like snakes? That wouldn’t help lookin’ at th’ controls would it.”
When the ship landed she looked hard at Romana, highly skeptical that a trip to an alien planet would be so short. “Won’t say no to a bathing suit, but…You didn’t just fly us over t’ Brighton, did you?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Romana chuckled. ❝ No, I’ve not got heat vision, I just see better in lower levels of light than humans. You see, my species can see more of the light spectrum, and our eyes reflect more light selectively, so in what might be darkness to a human, it’s just dim to us. Of course, I cannot see in complete darkness. ❞ Romana explained as she set the TARDIS to stay put and made sure of the coordinates.
❝ Brighton? ❞ Romana asked, clearly unsure of where that was, before shaking her head and the thought from it. ❝ No, we’re on Florana. Have a look. ❞ She turned on the viewfinder, which showed the immediate outside. The sky, while still bluish, was greener than it was on Earth, with clouds that had a distinct purple tint to them. The area around them was absolutely surrounded by flowers, including several bushes of black roses.
❝ My ship doesn’t move like an Earth ship, in a line, over real time. TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. You see, it’s a time and space machine, which can appear anywhere in the universe at any time, within reason. When we took off, I’d put in the coordinates for Florana, and we simply disappeared there and reappeared here, my way of dematerialisation. We went through the time vortex - a very specific example of what I believe Earthlings call Einstein-Rosen bridges. Or wormholes. ❞ Romana offered her hand.
❝ Shall we go to the wardrobe and pick out beach wear? ❞

❝ Certainly not. ❞
Romana’s eyes watched the Rani as she descended down the stairs, doing a good job of hiding her surprise. This was not what she had expected when she’d realised there was another Gallifreyan here. Of all places to meet one’s heroes -
She shifted slightly, stance relaxed. ❝ I was just seeing what other Gallifreyan was here. It’s quite a shock to find you. I never expected to meet the Rani. ❞ Admiration was clearly evident in her voice as she looked calmly at the other Gallifreyan, though slight excitement might be evident from her eyes. ❝ The council doesn’t send me anywhere. I doubt they even know where I am. ❞
〖1st Rani Starter Call - @okaycallmefred〗
Tumblr media
“And just what are you doing here? The Council hasn’t sent you here to try and keep an eye on me, have they?” It was either that or they were coming groveling to her, needing her help for something. Either way, such actions would not be tolerated.
The Rani moved to walk down the stairs from where she was stood above the girl on the second level of her base. The scanners had only picked up one new life form, this girl, which was a relief. If it came down to it, she doubted it would be too difficult to make sure this one didn’t get back to Gallifrey and she would be long gone by time the Time Lords noticed.

Well. That wasn’t what she had expected, but when was anything ever as she expected when rogue Time Lords were involved? The universe, she’d found, was very unpredictable and unexpected. Not so much a shock.
Romana took this to mean to be silent, which she complied with. After all, who was Romana to question a scientific genius like the Rani? Especially as the Time Lady was one of her role models and heroes. She watched with a casual stance as the Rani extracted the venom, tilting her head slightly to the side. A million questions wanted to slip from her lips, but she restrained herself. For a while.
❝ Well, as far as ways to die go, getting killed by the Rani isn’t so bad. May I at least ask what you’re doing, if you don’t mind? Surely working towards another breakthrough. ❞ There was no sarcasm or malice in her voice, only admiration and the slightly naive confidence one might have for their heroes.
〖3rd Rani Starter Call - @okaycallmefred〗
Tumblr media
How long had it been since The Rani had seen any of her own kind? Decades at the very least. Not that there were many left, only a couple broken ones scattered across the universe. And yet Romana looked so young. She had no idea what had happened thus far for the other, but she didn’t CARE either.
“You do realize it’s a crime to even try and speak to me, don’t you? Dangerous if nothing else.” She commented as she examined the vial of venom she was collecting from the creature. Once satisfied with the amount she closed the vial and opened up the machine, pulling the creature out and returned it to the container it was being kept in while she studied it. It was fascinating how deadly things could be the keys to life.

Romana let Jamie pick her outfit, though she’d styled it enough to enjoy it. As he added another bolt, she adjusted it to be more her taste, listening to him speak - she’d read all up about the family dynamics of humans in preparation for this eventuality, and she understood enough to get by. Perhaps in a scrape, but she’d get by.
❝ Pick me - Oh! ❞
She gave a short exclamation as Jamie picked her up, wrapping her arms around him out of instinct. Of course, at this point she’d at least gotten used to it, but it was still not in her culture. She chuckled a bit and gave him a smile as he let her down.
❝ Is she now. ❞ Romana said in more of a statement than a question, not seeming to be surprised. In such a primitive time like this, she assumed being more fit equated to being more likely to live. That was always the case, but moreso here, in such rough terrain. She’d filled her bag with anything she thought she might need, just in case - including a Stattenheim remote control, so she could call the TARDIS to her if necessary. ❝ Now then. Are you sure you want to do this, Jamie? ❞
@okaycallmefred
They’ve landed in Scotland. Almost his era, just a decade or so later. Jamie knows this much, and has taken over preparations. First, and most importantly, ensuring Romana is arrayed in tartan. But not just any tartan.
He drapes some over her shoulder, standing very close to do it. “Ah, ye’ve gotta be in my clan’s tartan. They they’ll know you’re friendly. Better than friendly. Family. My ma’ll give you the biggest hug once she knows you’re fine. Pick you up, probably, like this.”
Without warning, he lifts Romana up into a hug. Her feet clear the ground. And he puts her back down.
“Strong woman, my ma.”

PLEASE REPOST, DO NOT REBLOG rules: your muse has just died. They just dropped dead. As they were dying, they thought of these five things: at least they had ______.
A life outside of Gallifrey, where others accepted her for who she was and didn’t despise her for her intellect.
Her own TARDIS, to explore the universe.
