My heart actually hurts right now. I'm so disappointed in the show...but Jenkins himself said he's just writing fanfics...so lets all just agree we watched a shitty fanfic that didn't tag major character death and just scrub it from our minds. Izzy has a much better ending than what we saw...it just hasn't been written yet.

yeah...I really wanted to believe they wouldn't, but I just felt it in my bones they would. My heart hurts. I demand a redo.
I really did think when Stede said "it doesn't look that bad" that Izzy and Ed were gonna have this emotional moment where they both thought Izzy was dying, and just as that moment was ending Roach would come up and be like "it's just a flesh wound, he'll be fine." I really thought that's where we were heading. I feel so betrayed. I feel like my dance partner has just dropped me.

That moment when you need to decide if your fear of awkward audience questions outweighs your fucking need to hear Con O'Neill speak about Izzy.

I finally put my finger on why I have so much compassion for Izzy.... It's because I work in a residential behavioral health center for teenagers and it is now written into the fiber of my being that anger (in the way Izzy has it) is just a maladaptive coping mechanism to deal with fear or hurt. Literally can't look at either of these two men without just seeing trauma and maladaptive coping mechanisms to deal with said trauma...so I've written a fic that adds a little bit of backstory for Izzy and also seeks to explain their behavior through the lens of "some people are bastards because they have unresolved trauma". It also gets Izzy off without abusing him.
my goal was to write a fic that was 1) homophobia free because I feel like that honors the spirit of the show 2) BDSM free just because I don't think Ed could keep up that kraken energy for long. IMO He uses violence to cover up shame, not because he enjoys it (see my other meta) 3) maintains nuanced characters that aren't fluff bombs or perpetual hot messes

Ummm, so you know how MOST Ed/Izzy fics center on BDSM with varying levels of consent/malice. Why are we not tagging that KrakHands... I just thought of it and I can't stop laughing. This tag does not exist on AO3 and why????

Our Flag Means Death has me thinking. Let's normalize straight baiting, like...write a sweeping fantasy epic and for 2,000 pages everyone's like "Wow, look at these brothers in arms. Just dudes being guys, men being dudes." and then BAM. GOTCHA BITCH. THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. It could be like a gay rick roll. A dick roll. But seriously, I feel like there's almost this expectation that any media with a gay pairing will sort of...warn you ahead of time? Like there's the expectation that you can't just have an explicit gay romance without giving people an inkling ahead of time that that's what they will be seeing...in case they aren't into it. Like a trigger warning for homophobes, and yeah. Fuck that.

This took me a loooonnng time.. I still might do some value adjustments but overall I am reallllyy pleased.
Edit: thank you to everyone for all your lovely reblog tags it REALLY means a lot. I didn't start making art until I was already a full adult so I always feel like I'm so "behind" in a way... Like my art feels like it's stuck as being very literal because I don't have the kind of free time to experiment that I would have if I had started younger. I definitely get very jealous of a lot of artists on Tumblr...so it is nice to hear that people are impressed by my art as well.

DID STEDE PUT A LADDER ON HIS SHIP? Did the ladder save Lucius? In episode 3, Stede admires the permanent ladder on the side of the Spanish ship because he really struggled to use the dangly ladder when boarding the fisherman.
Tumblr media
He appears to be climbing up a ladder in episode 7 after he buys the map..
Tumblr media
We can also see Blackbeard climbing up in the same spot in episode 8 (right next to the cannon). Seriously, how the hell else would he have gotten up the side of the ship if there weren't a ladder there? Blackbeard doesn't always have the best attention to detail so I would not be surprised to hear a conversation like "Shouldn't you be dead?" "Turns out I can climb a ladder...soo.."

Does anyone else think it may have been a huge mistake to keep the orphan raised by a nun to be a revenge seeking killing machine on board after leaving their boyfriend to die?

So, the prevailing thought about Izzy seems to be… “fuck that guy”…and I’m not saying that’s a wrong thought, but I also think that some of his motivations as a character get overlooked.
If you think about it, he and Ed are an exact parallel to Stede and Mary, at least in the beginning. In episode 4 Izzy is very clearly the long-suffering wife doing all the emotional labor in the relationship and Ed is just bored off his tits with their life together. Izzy is trying so hard to keep Ed on track but he just gets dismissed entirely. He is very understandably stressed that they are about to die and his boss is playing dress up. Izzy actually tells Ed how hard it is for him to deal with his erratic moods and Ed mockingly replies “ohh sounds stressful, Izzy”.  He’s not being unreasonable at all when he says he’s going to leave.
He did actually plan to follow through and leave at the end of that episode, but Blackbeard stops him by saying he has a plan to kill Stede. I don’t think he really had any intention of killing Stede. I think he just said something that would stop Izzy from leaving.  Izzy feels reassured that Ed is ready to live by their unofficial pirate vows (murder and mayhem, till death do us part or whatever) and continues to be  super loyal to him and indulge his whims (according to a deleted scene Izzy even put the bows in Eds beard for the party). By episode six he is understandably upset that he was lied to. He is no longer in a mood to walk away because he’s been sitting and stewing about how he has literally done everything for this man for years and no, he doesn’t want to just call it quits on the life he signed up for just because Ed is having some sort of midlife crisis.
By the end, him and Mary stop being parallels because Mary makes healthy decisions (except for the ear hole thing) and moves on from her unhappy marriage while Izzy just tries to cling to something that is not working anymore.
He is a sad little man and I know you all hate him but I do think he could be redeemable. I actually don’t think he needs to be laid, I think he just needs his own pirate ship with a crew that uhhhh....better aligns with his goals of pirating.

My first reaction to Blackbeard’s turn in episode 10 was like “Wow, he just swung so quickly between two extremes that I have whiplash”. At first, it didn’t really track for me. It seemed like a huge over reaction/quasi non-sensical. However, I watched the turn again and it really all seems to make sense….but before we get to that… first let’s think about who Ed was before he had an emotional break through that allowed him to be a namby pamby in a silk dressing gown pining for his boyfriend. Then, we can see why that namby pamby did a 180 and set out to kill a group of men he was planning a talent show with 60 seconds ago.
He was a child in an abusive household and obviously he has very ingrained low self esteem over his former station in life. He is still very sensitive to any kind of rejection or ridicule and his entire identity is a persona that is designed to keep him safe from those two things. To stop others from perceiving this he overcompensates with violent outbursts whenever he feels shame (ask the guy that got skinned with a snail fork). He also makes sure that everyone around him (that he’s not trying to rob or maim), really, really likes him. Think about how he is so performative with the crew so that they absolutely idolize him. He doesn’t act in a way that feels genuine. He acts in a way that will live up to his legend.
In general, he has never been himself. He has always been a chameleon. When we see his interactions with Calico Jack, we are seeing echoes of he person he was when he first met him as a young man. He takes all his cues from Jack, he lets Jack dictate everything about their relationship and clearly feels more comfortable following his lead than asserting his preferences (exhibit A: He starts drinking 30 seconds afer he says its too early to drink because Jack mocked him).
Then, he graduates to a codependent sort of relationship with Izzy where he is still seeking approval but in a less sycophantic way. Izzy likes working under the greatest pirate and Blackbeard likes getting his approval. He is still very much just maintaining his image and persona to both gain approval and protect himself.
By the time Ed meets Stede he feels like there is something seriously missing but he’s got no idea what it is because he never developed an identity that wasn’t just a self-defense mechanism.
But with Stede, I think he feels like he doesn’t need to try so hard.  Who he is with Stede feels very easy and natural. By the time they get to Wayward Seaman sleepaway camp he realizes he doesn’t need a persona. He can just be Ed. He’s not going to be ridiculed or rejected.
After Stede does LITERALLY THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO TO A PERSON THAT HAS FINALLY FELT SAFE TO BE THEMSELVES AFTER 45 YEARS OF INTENSE REPRESSION, Ed takes it FAIRLY WELL. He doesn’t go right back to maiming. All the bluster has gone out of him. He’s just sad.
When Izzy confronts him about not being himself anymore, he actually takes a step back from Izzy. He doesn’t even stand his ground. It isn’t until Izzy throws “namby pamby pining for his boyfriend” in his face that Ed reacts violently. While Izzy is still in the room, his face is full of anger… but the screen cap is him as soon as Izzy leaves the room. He immediately starts tearing up. This is exactly, EXACTLY why he bottled everything up. Being open gives people weapons. Then he hears the crew chanting his name in the distance saying “sing us another song!!!”
He spends a lot of time thinking, thinking and drinking. I think he slowly becomes ashamed of how much emotion he has let out to the crew. When he pushes Lucius overboard he is punishing him for seeing him while he was vulnerable.
Even though he appears to be the dominant person in his relationship with Izzy, he is actually being round about submissive by cutting the mans toe off and feeding it to him. This is exactly what Izzy wanted! He’s saying fine, I’ll be your bad ass pirate because wow you hurt the fuck out of my feelings. He is still in intense pain even though he is trying to block it out. For most of the post-Kraken part of that episode Ed seems dissociated because he has no real emotions to show except sadness. They make this pretty clear when the last time we see him he is crying and hugging himself.
I feel like I just wrote way too much and I”m not sure if I even properly expressed the main feeling I have in my head. But whatever. Just be sad with me.

Blackbeard’s seeming unwillingness to intervene during Izzy and Stede’s duel really bothered me.  At first, I interpreted it purely as “he doesn’t want Stede to die but he can’t help him because pirate honor or whatever” but now I think its actually more to do with the fact he grew up in abusive household. He tries to stop it but he very quickly disengages when he gets push back from Izzy. He slowly starts edging away as soon as Izzy and Stede start verbally engaging with each other..if you watch he edges all the way to the other side of the boat.  Seeing two people he cares about in an argument makes him revert back to his childhood powerlessness. He can’t do anything but watch helplessly because that is the survival strategy he adopted for this situation when he was a kid.
The show does focus a lot on how Stede is still motivated/haunted by his own childhood trauma, so I don’t think its a coincidence that this scene happened right after we learned that Ed grew up in an abusive household.
