Fanfic Idea: "The Witch's Companions"

In a Camelot where magic has never been banned, Morgana reigns as the city’s beloved witch, accompanied by her two familiars: Arthur, a grumpy fat cat, and Merlin, a clever crow.

One day, a vengeful wizard curses Morgana’s house, and when she fails to return, Merlin and Arthur escape in a panic. The moment they step beyond the threshold, they discover something astonishing—they’re no longer animals but humans.

Now, stranded in unfamiliar forms and with only each other to rely on, they embark on a series of quests to find and rescue Morgana. Along the way, they encounter dragons, magical creatures, and dangerous foes.

As a former cat, Arthur naturally wields blades with deadly precision, while Merlin—once a crow, a creature often tied to omens and dark magic—struggles to harness his newfound magical abilities.

As their journey stretches on, hope begins to fade. Yet, despite their despair, they press forward, growing ever closer. In each other, they find the only one who truly understands their past, their fears, and their hearts.

Finally, they return to Camelot, grief-stricken, convinced Morgana is lost forever. They seek out Gwen to deliver the tragic news only to find Morgana lounging in Gwen’s arms, kissing her lazily.

Turns out, the witch was never in danger. She’d simply been on a romantic vacation with her girlfriend the whole time.

I'm obsessed with this idea-grumpy cat Arthur, chaos-crow Merlin, and Morgana/Gwen's accidental gaslighting. I desperately want to write it, but I'm drowning in other projects right now.

Gaius was, technically, the first person to meet Arthur, since he helped deliver him. He was the one who took care of him on his first year of life, since Uther was too strung up with grief to notice the boy. Uther’s grief soon transformed into rage, and he placed the blame on the very people who he asked for help.

The next five years, Gaius watched as his beloved Camelot, that was full of life, happiness and magic, transformed into a kingdom of fear and hiding. Many ran away, many more were slaughtered, and those who remained, remained in fear.

The child born was raised without knowing the beautiful side of magic, only its destruction.

Gaius tried to keep the little prince away from all that, but, as he grew up, Uther’s ideals became Arthur’s. Gaius could only watch as the affectionate, outgoing boy he cared for transformed into a repressed, sometimes even cruel man.

Arthur showed his true heart once in a while; showing leniency when his father taught mercilessness, showing sensibility when his father taught hatred. But Gaius had to watch as he buried those traits deeper and deeper.

As Arthur reached his twenty years, Gaius thought he would rule same as Uther.

Then came Merlin, a magical boy with a great destiny on his shoulders. Against all odds, he dug his way into Arthur’s heart and brought it to surface, and transformed him once again into the sensible, kind boy he once was.

Mesmerised by Arthur’s change, Gaius failed to see as Merlin transformed into a shadow of himself, with a destiny that consumed his bright soul and left him with nothing.

I just saw someone say "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" as an argument for boycotting AO3

Babe AO3 is a nonprofit. They do not exist under the ethics of capitalism. Fanfiction is legal because no money is ever exchanged around it. (All the money given to AO3 is used to maintain their servers and pay their lawyers to help keep fanfiction legal.)

Fanfiction is one of the few things in this world - probably the one singular form of entertainment that does not exist within the confines of capitalism. So by your own logic, even if you hate some of the content on AO3, it's inherently the only ethical thing to consume in the whole world.

Merthur Isn’t Just About Sacrifice. It’s About Devotion, and the Kind of Rest You Only Find in Love.

Something very curious happens when we talk about the romantic dynamics in Merthur.

Everyone tends to focus on the main, most obvious ones: physical touch and sacrifice as demonstrations of affection.

Those are absolutely present throughout the show, especially in the early episodes. But in my opinion, there’s another dynamic that many of us overlook.

Devotion as a metaphor for love.

A lot of people see that devotion as one-sided, applying it only to Merlin — in the same way we might say that in Arthur’s language, a “thank you” could be his way of saying “I love you.”

Because of the prophecy, we often limit that “I belong to you” to Merlin, since the poor sorcerer is in a position where he must be at Arthur’s side, something even Hunith points out.

But what about Arthur?

Arthur breathes devotion. He’s the very ideal of what a king and knight should be. In fact, I’d dare to say that in the whole story, the only person more devoted than him was Lancelot.

What frustrates me is that people often forget how dedicated Arthur was utterly committed, willing to change, to act, and to risk his life for Merlin.

I hate when this devotion is made to look one-sided, because not only does it waste the chance to make their relationship more complex in fanfics, but it also robs Arthur of an essential part of who he is.

That leads me to my next point:

Merthur sees rest as a metaphor for love.

Both Merlin and Arthur carry the world on their shoulders.

Merlin bears the weight of being a magical, almost divine creature.

Arthur bears the weight of being Camelot’s monarch and shaping the future Kilgharrah promised them.

Obviously, there will be moments when they need each other’s support — in any relationship, emotional roles aren’t static.

There will be times when Merlin wants to forget that he’s also Emrys.

Other times, Arthur will want to forget he’s a king.

And the only person they’d trust enough to set down their burdens and collapse from exhaustion is the other.
