Now that FFVII Rebirth is out, how do you feel about it?

This account is technically on hiatus, but I want to talk about this.

MASSIVE SPOILERS BELOW, do not read if you haven't finished the game. The overall thoughts are: mostly great stuff, but the ending was absolute ass.

Props to the game devs for following their artistic vision, but it seems to downplay/abandon the important theme of death that was so present in the original. I really dislike that they're leaning so hard into the 'multiverse' concept without doing anything new or interesting with it. It's just convoluted to an unnecessary point. I hate how they handled the Zack timeline stuff (he's kind of become a bit of an annoying character in the Remake project), how anti-climactic his meeting with Cloud was, and of course, the fumbling of Aerith's death, specifically with its aftermath. I will not lie though, there were tears in my eyes during the jenova boss battle while her theme was playing. The more emotional side of me wanted her to live as she's my favourite character after Sephiroth, but from a storytelling perspective, her death is quite paramount and necessary considering the emotional effect and thematic weight. I generally think the remake project has neutered the theme of death and Rebirth has not changed my mind on this.

Small thing, but I was disappointed by the fact that bizarro Sephiroth shows up... and they didn't play Birth of a God? I'd been looking forward to hearing a new version of that since the remake came out, but now I think it won't be remade at all :(

I loved a lot of it though. Standouts for me were Junon, Cosmo Canyon, the Gold Saucer, the Gongaga reactor stuff, and though I think it drags a bit too long, there were some parts of the Temple of the Ancients that I loved. The City of the Ancients was beautifully re-created too, I audibly gasped when I saw it. But I think the cargo ship (now it's a cruise ship?) was done much better in the original.

The best addition was definitely Tifa's scene in the Weapon/lifestream, where it delves into and hints at her own history. That was unexpected and really well done.

Considering the ending, I'm very disappointed to see this is the direction the remake project has chosen to go in, to the point that I'm less excited for the final part than I had been for Rebirth. I really hope we one day get a true remake (that hopefully disregards the compilation). I do not have high hopes for the ending of the final part, but as always...

... Sephiroth was peak.

And they handled him better here than in remake, I think.

I’m sorry for my absolute lack of activity here, my year abroad has left me so ridiculously busy. I genuinely can’t wait for the summer.

Rebirth is inevitably going to strengthen my muse so much.

How does it feel to be in Smash Bros.? Are you enjoying your time there?

"To an extent, of course," Sephiroth replies as if it's a rather obvious conclusion. "I do enjoy battling with such... unfamiliar individuals."

There were a wide range of beings he could fight that simply could not be found in his own world; adding much-needed novelty to the usual battles he'd grown very used to.

"However, I cannot stay for long. To battle mindlessly for the sake of it shall not stimulate me forever. I have important plans to attend to and accomplish."

Part of me is so tempted to do some intense crack RP where I describe Sephiroth’s eyes to be the colour of Shrek.

So I got my Sephiroth amiibo early.

I posted it on twitter and the post exploded.

And now I see it ended up on a NintendoLife article.

It’s so surreal to see that?
