Some women are expected to be strong at times when they can't. Her feminism would involve reassuring her that it's okay to not be strong.

Some neurodivergent people are raised to believe that they're too stupid to ever amount to anything. Their disability activism would involve reassuring them that they're capable.

Some neurodivergent people are raised to believe that they're smart and gifted, and are expected to live up to impossible standards. Their disability activism would involve allowing them to fail, make mistakes, be stupid, etc.

Some children are constantly reminded "you're the child, I'm the adult" in order to deny their autonomy. Their youth rights activism would involve treating them like an adult at times when they feel ready for it.

Some children are treated like adults in order to justify increased expectations or to downplay abuse against them. Their youth rights activism would involve allowing them to be a child.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to oppression. Each individual person's experience is different. Whatever trauma is caused by their oppression, the activism should focus on undoing it.

Many of those convicted of storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, have celebrated the pardons or commutations that they received this week from President Trump.

Not Pamela Hemphill. A retired drug and alcohol counselor who lives in Boise, Idaho, she pleaded guilty in January 2022 to a misdemeanor offense for entering the Capitol during the riot and was sentenced to 60 days in prison and three years of probation.

She said she did not want a pardon.

“Absolutely not,” Ms. Hemphill said in an interview on Wednesday. “It’s an insult to the Capitol Police, to the rule of law and to the nation. If I accept a pardon, I’m continuing their propaganda, their gaslighting and all their falsehoods they’re putting out there about Jan. 6.”

Ms. Hemphill, 71, who was called “MAGA Granny” in some news headlines, has said that she no longer supports Mr. Trump or believes his lie that the 2020 election was stolen. She said that a therapist had helped change her view of the attack by telling her she was “not a victim of Jan. 6; I was a volunteer.”

“I lost my critical thinking,” she said on Wednesday, reflecting on her involvement in the riot and the “Stop the Steal” movement. “Now I know it was a cult, and I was in a cult.”

Her wish to reject the pardon was previously reported by The Idaho Statesman. Ms. Hemphill said she had spoken with a lawyer about spurning the grant of clemency but had not taken any legal action to do so.

It is not clear that she can legally reject the pardon.

“It would be a novel act to file a court case to reject a pardon of a misdemeanor, in part because of the low stakes,” Mark Osler, a professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, said in an interview.

There is some legal precedent, however, suggesting that any such request could face an uphill battle.

something i keep coming back to is the fallacy of putting a time limit on indigineity in contexts where its convenient.

people deny Jewish indigineity (or at least native-ness) and its like "golly gee. wow. so you're telling me that if you exile a people from the land they originated from and are closely tied to then wait enough years you can sever their ties to their homeland. If you colonize someone hard enough you can destroy their indigineity?"

This was a website to help women learn about their reproductive rights in the US and to find health care.

In the United States, there was a 288% increase in antisemitic incidents, peaking in April 2024. The incidents included a number of significant acts of violence, such as the murder of Dr. Ben Harouni in California in March, attacks on synagogues, and violence in schools and universities.

In Canada, the situation was even worse, with a 562% increase in antisemitic incidents, a quarter of which were violent, the report said.

The trends were equally concerning in Europe. In France, there was an increase of over 350% in antisemitic incidents, with 28% involving violence, the report found. In the United Kingdom, there was a 450% increase in antisemitic incidents, with almost 2,000 incidents in the first half of 2024 alone.

In China, social media platforms were flooded with antisemitic content and conspiracy theories, including Holocaust denial. In Japan and Taiwan, there were anti-Israel protests and Nazi gestures, something previously not common in the region.

In Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva compared Israel’s actions in Gaza to the Holocaust in February, igniting a wave of antisemitic rhetoric on social media. In Chile, there was a 325% increase in antisemitic incidents, while Argentina saw a slight decrease.

South Africa saw a 185% increase in antisemitic incidents, including calls for boycotts of Israel and anti-Israel propaganda. The report noted that the actual number of antisemitic incidents is likely higher than reported.

Australia experienced a sharp 387% increase in antisemitic incidents, with incidents including synagogue arson, property vandalism, and physical assaults.

In former Soviet bloc countries, 2024 was marked by a significant escalation in anti-Jewish and anti-Israel rhetoric. The March attack at the Crocus City Hall near Moscow, where 145 people were killed, led to a slew of antisemitic conspiracy theories, particularly on social media. A series of violent attacks in Dagestan in June, including the burning of synagogues and churches and the murder of 22 people, was accompanied by a widespread online incitement campaign.

In the Muslim world, Iran continues to support terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah and Hamas and deny Israel’s right to exist. In contrast, countries like Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates are taking more moderate approaches at the government level, although public opinion often differs.

Online, antisemitic content increased by more than 300%, with classical antisemitism accounting for 38.5% of reported content, Holocaust denial accounting for 21.1%, and anti-Israel and anti-Zionist content accounting for 15.4%.

Not even 24 hours after President Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office and issued an executive order denying the existence of transgender and nonbinary people, his administration has taken another brazen step to erase LGBTQ+ Americans. The Advocate has confirmed that references to LGBTQ+ identities and HIV-related resources have vanished overnight from WhiteHouse.gov and several federal agency websites, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of State, and Department of Labor, based on a report by GLAAD. The removed content includes essential resources such as the White House’s equity report, information on expanding access to HIV prevention and treatment, and Pride Month acknowledgments. The Department of Labor’s LGBTQ+ workers’ rights page and the State Department’s LGBTQ+ rights page have also been taken down. GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis condemned the administration’s actions in a statement. “President Trump claims to be a strong proponent of freedom of speech, yet he is clearly committed to censorship of any information containing or related to LGBTQ Americans and issues that we face,” Ellis said. “Today’s action proves the Trump administration’s goal of making it as difficult as possible for LGBTQ Americans to find federal resources or otherwise see ourselves reflected under his presidency.”
