WOW! That was the best Nintendo Direct since we got our first official look at Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo came out swinging with today’s direct and I can not fault a single aspect of the reveals. The highlights; Crash Bandicoot HD, Okami HD, Light Nightmares, South Park: Fractured But Whole, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, all being ported to Switch! New Splatoon 2 content including a new campaign. Octopath Traveller Special Edition being announced. However, the biggest surprise and definitive moment came with the announced of SUPER SMASH BROS FOR SWITCH IN 2018! I was running around my apartment, yelling, jumping, dancing in celebration. One last thing that became clear is Nintendo is showing intent and facilitating eSports with a number of their titles. On this day in 2003, Mario Kart Double Dash!! was released for the Nintendo GameCube in North America. Double Dash was the first and last in the console series to have two characters on the one kart. This added two new gameplay mechanics that provided more diversity in the racers handling. Firstly, players could hold two items at one time. Each character on the kart was able to hold one item. Switching the characters between the passenger and driver position allows the player to utilize the different items. Secondly, the physical characteristics of the characters, primarily weight, affect the handling, speed, acceleration, and weight of the vehicle. Heavier characters, although slower had the ability to push karts with smaller characters around and potentially wipe out the smaller kart. Smaller characters have better handling and acceleration. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is not the best game in the Mario Kart series, however, it is a worthy entry for the new mechanics it introduced. It has been a while since I have done an ‘On this day’ post. It has been a roller-coaster couple of months. I quit my job, road tripped around Eastern Australia and moved to Brisbane. I am still not settled but I feel it is time to start posting again. On this day in 2000, one of the best games of all time was released for the Nintendo 64 in Australia, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. This game had a huge influence on me personally and was the moment I started taking video games and video game development more seriously. It was after playing this game I starting conducting research how video games, console manufacturers, game developers, and publishers had shaped the industry; the highs, lows and everything in between. Majora’s Mask introduced an interesting mechanic that made the world feel alive. Many games past and present feel like the world does not exist until you enter the scene. Without your presence the Non-player characters (NPCs) are set to pause, waiting for you, the player, to enter the room. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask developers created a world that lived even without your influence. NPCs live out their lives, do chores, complete tasks and quests. You, the player, as Link can alter their daily lives by interacting with them, completing missions for the NPCs and reconnecting relationships. The world, Termina, is complex, compelling and interactive. Following the daily lives of the NPCs became an addiction to me. In particular one of the most complex side quests, Anju’s Anguish was practically intriguing. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is playable on the Nintendo 3DS/2DS and also on the Nintendo 64. After attending PAX Aus 2017 I was very excited for Super Nova. The first year I have been able to attend in my home city of Brisbane. I was very disappointed with Super Nova. The laneways were too narrow. This made moving through the expo difficult, slow and claustrophobic. The stalls were all retailers and there was very little to do if you were not interested in purchasing merchandise. PAX Aus is a more immersive experience with more fan service. If you can only choose one to attend, PAX is the right choice. On a positive note I did pick up two awesome prints. Well I am officially unemployed. My choice though. Enjoying my time off playing through my back catalogue of games. First game: South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Loving the game so far. The combat mechanics are a vast improvement on The Stick of Truth. Death Squared Collector’s Edition was announced today by the developers, SMG. The Collector’s Edition will be an Australian only release with 500 copies being sold through EB Games exclusively. All copies with come with a Digital download code, metallic silver sleeve signed by the developers, each copy will be individually number, include a metal pin (1 of 4) and a sticker sheet. If the developers stay true to their word, this will be a very limited release so get one while they are available on the EB Games online store. Death Squared Collector’s Edition will be released on November 1st.
