the similarities between horseback riding and being addicted to drugs

i was hooked the first time i did it. every time i do it, i need it more and more. its an expensive habit. the rich spend a lot on it, the middle class empty their wallet for it. its all you talk about. its all you think about. it's never boring, and it never gets old. it becomes routine, and you do it everyday [or wish that you could]. it gets you high. you get withdrawals. you take a risk every time you do it, but whatever. you become depressed and lost without it.

the only difference is that horseback riding isn't terrible for you, and your life is certainly not better without it.

feeling discouraged

i wish someone in my life cared about how much riding means to me. how dedicated i am to it. how much more dedicated i would be to it if i had the time and money. no one gets it. no one. and they never will. for the first time ever i feel like i should just give up for good. and that makes me really upset.

so i got to ride my favorite pony today, yes i'm 20 and i still ride ponies, but he's more like a small horse... anyway that's besides the point. It felt so good to ride in the warm weather and practice 3ft jumper courses. i really love this new barn i've been riding at for a few months now, my trainer has realized my potential and raised my confidence both as a rider and as a person. I love how today she told me when i came to her a few months ago i sucked and now i'm amazing and have improved tremendously. she tells me i have brass balls when all i've heard from other trainers is how timid i am. i am really looking forward to the coming time spent at this barn.

but what made my day here today wasn't the weather, or the compliments, or the pony, or the grand prix style jump i managed to pull off, but that when i was done with my lesson i was just standing in the ring watching a friend ride her 4 year old. she was doing a small hunter exercise with him and he kept stopping at the first fence. this happened about 5 times, then my trainer goes "Steph, get on him and get him over those jumps." Without hesitation i was given a leg up onto Dante. without a helmet.

yeah, i know what you're thinking "oooh im such a bad ass" i know, riding without a helmet, seems like everyone does that, but this was my first time ever doing that... and i jumped a course on a four year old without it. my confidence has never been this high in my life. and the feeling of wind through your hair when you're riding a horse is the definition of pleasure.

i just want to run away to somewhere warm where i can ride all the horses i want and do the things that i want to do and not have to deal with anyone but myself and make myself truly happy.
