So uh.

Apparently Tumblr’s saying no lewd shit. This isn’t a surprise, and they have every right to do this, but the Tumblr Staff Theorem states that everything they attempt to do will have one of two outcomes. It will either

Not be coded well, and do absolutely nothing, or

Not be coded well, and work too well.

LONG NERDY CODING TALK AHEAD

Speaking in a programming sense, both of these outcomes are the result of one thing in particular: vague terms in the if statements (basically a thing that checks if one thing is true and acts accordingly) leading to the if statements doing absolutely nothing because the chances of it coming back as either true or false (‘tis a case by case thing) are so incredibly weighted to one outcome in particular.

In this case, it’ll check if there’s nudity or whatever in a picture, but because Tumblr does this based on the amount of skin-tone colored pixels in a picture, completely innocuous photos such as selfies will get flagged.

LONG NERDY CODING TALK IS NOW DONE

People seem to convinced that the latter is going to happen, simply because “hey I think tumblr means fucking business this time guys” (it’s actually more complicated than that but that’s what it boils down to), and as such, are abandoning the place in droves. Naturally, the NSFW group left first (a solid chunk of them left like a week ago actually), but then the new statement about them actually changing the community guidelines came out and people read them and realized that even posting selfies is liable to get you banned simply because it’s got too many skin-tone colored pixels, which quite a few more people ghosting the place, which led to more people leaving because the people they follow are now gone, and this becomes a huge chain reaction.

Long story short, I’ll be fucking astounded if the site’s userbase is 10% of what it was 3 months ago in 2 weeks. This leads to why I made this post: if enough of the people I follow leave, then I’ll leave as well. But not before giving anyone who cares a way to communicate with me.
