Chapter 1: Do You Believe In Fate, Doctor?
Eden tapped her pencil against the metal cafeteria table, looking out at the sea of students filling the tables, engaged in meaningless conversation about who was going where for the weekend. They laughed too loudly, sharing their weekend plans and latest gossip. She rolled her eyes, feeling annoyed, as laughter and pointless chatter bounced off the pale brick walls. Her focus shifted when she spotted Jayce making his way towards her table with two trays of food in his hands. She smirked at the sight of his mountain of food, but didn’t comment. She continued eating her food, waiting for her friend to grace her with his presence. She smirked at the thought, but meant no harm in it. It was her own inside joke, knowing her friend was quite the all-star at times.
“Hey,” Jayce began as he sat down, “I heard you’re actually going to make an appearance at the science club after school today, that true?” He looked at her quizzically, diving into his food without hesitation. She smirked, both at his question and his appetite, noting the hope in his eyes. She tapped her chipped black nails against the table, making it appear as though she was actually thinking about it, even though she had already made up her mind. She decided to mess with him a little, just for a bit of fun, nothing truly malicious. “Maybe, depends on how fast you get on my nerves today,” she said, sarcasm lacing her voice, no real malice could be found in her eyes, though.
Jayce stopped mid-chew, looking at her with amusement. He swallowed quickly, taking a sip of his drink to make it go down easier, before returning her wit with a knowing smile. “Right. Well, if you decide to come this time, you might finally meet Viktor. You two are so alike, it’s insane. I’m telling you, it’s like you’re the same person.” Eden rolled her eyes at the statement, and Jayce returned to his food. “You keep saying that, but I’m not sure I believe you. Besides, you know what happened the last time I got involved with a ‘genius’,” she made air quotes around the last word, both their faces falling slightly at the memory. Jayce swallowed slowly, trying to choose his words carefully. “Right, I’m sorry, Eden. But I promise, Viktor’s different. Not just from that asshole, but from… well, everyone, honestly.” He said, rubbing the back of his neck nervously, trying to get himself out of the hole he had dug himself into.
She looked away and sighed, momentarily distracted by a squirrel she spotted across the courtyard outside the window next to their table. She couldn’t help but think of all the time and effort she wasted just to be thrown away so easily. She looked back at Jayce, who wore an apologetic look, and decided to give him some mercy. It’s not like it was his fault, anyway; in fact, he was there for her during the aftermath. “You know,” she began, catching his eye to make sure he could read her face, “you keep saying how alike we are, but if that’s the case, where has he been all this time?” The question was meant to lighten the mood, although it was genuine, and it seemed to work as Jayce’s face lit up a bit. “Robotics club, science club… hell, I think he even takes guitar lessons on the weekends sometimes.” She flashed a smile that she hoped conveyed that she wasn’t upset with him about the earlier topic, and he seemed to get the hint as he continued to devour his mountain of food. She chuckled lightly. ‘Man, can this boy eat,’ she thought as she shook her head with a light smile.
As he finished his food, she sighed and ran her hand through her curly brown and blue hair, twisting the ends mindlessly as she got lost in thought about Viktor. ‘Another name in the crowd’, she thought. Another genius she wasn’t sure lived up to the hype, another person to talk about in the halls.
They each had a story, a background that was meant to make you pity them, to sympathize with them. All so they could manipulate and use you, then toss you away when they got bored. Was Viktor really all that different? She couldn’t help but compare what she heard about him to her recent past. A boy who used his wit and charm to play the part of a genius, only to turn out to be a fraud who lied and hurt her. He had treated their relationship like it was nothing more than a science experiment, and she learned her lesson. She would never let anyone get close enough to do that to her again. That’s why she got so involved with chemistry and music, because it was something to occupy her mind and time. Something to distract her, to keep her busy. They never lied to her or tried to use her. Music had emotion, and chemistry had rules, both of which the self-proclaimed prodigy had never graced her with. In a world full of uncertainties, she could call them a comfort, a home.
She was snapped out of her thoughts when Jayce let out a huge belch, throwing away his food and discarding his trays. She followed soon after, the bell ringing to signal that lunch was over. They both stood up, Jayce grabbed his bag from his seat, and turned to her. “Alright, well, I gotta get to class. I’ll see you at the science club later.” He looked at her, hopeful. She grabbed her bag, giving him a light fist bump before shaking her head with a smile. “I guess we’ll see,” she said with a playful smirk. They exited the cafeteria, separating to go to their respective classes. Eden’s mind wandered as she made her way to her math class, her thoughts still occupied by what they had talked about. She was curious about Viktor, that was for sure. Who wouldn’t be, with how often her friends brought him up? She supposed she would find out sooner or later, and meeting him amongst her domain of chemistry didn’t sound too bad. She smiled at the thought of getting back into chemistry again. It had become a comfort to her, a home in a world full of uncertainties. She sighed and shook her head, setting her bag down as she found her seat in class, the bell rang not long afterwards.
Across campus, Viktor entered his English class with Ekko, adjusting the strap on his guitar case before leaning it against the wall with his backpack. He sat at his desk, Ekko taking a seat next to him, as he tapped his fingers rhythmically against the desk. His rings clinked against it, a quiet habit he barely noticed anymore, as he waited for the other students to take their seats. He glanced around the room at the posters lining the walls, uncaringly, overhearing the unimportant chatter from his peers. Ekko pulled out a notebook before turning to Viktor, a smile decorating his face. “So, you’re actually going to the gig this weekend? For real?” Viktor turned to him with a small smile, his eyes reflecting his dry wit. “Of course,” he said, pushing back a lock of hair that faded from a dark brown to a light blonde. “Why wouldn’t I?”
Ekko rolled his eyes slightly as the teacher made her way into the room, setting things up for when the bell rang. “Dude, come on. You’re always too busy to go, but I’m glad you’re coming this time.” Ekko grabbed a water bottle from his bag, setting it on his desk before turning back to his friend. “You know, I hear Eden’s going to be there too. Maybe you two will finally meet.” Viktor rolled his eyes, both at his friend’s words and his grin. He shook his head, turning more towards his friend now. “I keep hearing about her. It’s starting to feel like it's only a matter of time before I run into her,” he said, his eyebrow slightly arched. Ekko chuckled lightly, glancing at the teacher for a moment, before turning back once more. “Honestly, it feels like it, man. You two are basically the same person. Smart, sarcastic, science nerds… Hell, she even paints her nails black too.” He gestured with a grin to Viktor’s nails, which, although slightly chipped, were also painted black.
Viktor chuckled at the thought, “Sounds like you’re describing a mirror more than a person.” Dry wit laced his words as he looked at his friend. Ekko shrugged, “Pretty much,” he said, finally taking a drink of his water. “I can’t believe you haven’t met her yet, it’s like fate is teasing us or something.” Viktor shook his head at that. He didn’t believe in destiny or fate, only hard work and logic. He often wondered why people loved romanticizing things that didn’t need to be so complicated. After all, it was just meeting someone. How crazy could things actually turn out?
Viktor was sharply torn from his thoughts as the bell rang and the teacher began class, but his mind occasionally wandered back to Eden. His curiosity was piqued, that was for sure.
Eden was already making her way towards the science lab before the bell rang, her bag resting against her shoulder. As she walked through the hall, her mind wandered to her earlier conversation with Jayce. He loved to draw parallels, especially between people. He always liked seeing things that weren’t there, romanticizing things that weren’t all that serious. She shook her head at the thought. How crazy could meeting someone be? She adjusted her bag as she kept making her way to the lab, which was on the other side of campus, so it would be a bit of a walk. Her mind traveled back again, and the way her friends had described Viktor tugged at her thoughts. ‘He has to be just another name in a sea of names’, she thought, but she couldn’t help but be interested in the way Jayce had described him. Smart, sarcastic, genius. She rolled her eyes at that, but the thought wasn’t lost on her. What if he wasn’t wrong this time? Jayce and Ekko had been talking about him for what she felt like was forever.
She shook her head as she turned a corner, determined not to let another genius get close to her and manipulate her. She had learned her lesson, she reminded herself; she wasn’t going to let anyone get the best of her. She sighed as she passed a group of loud students, rolling her eyes at more meaningless chatter about what party they were going to this weekend. Her mind then wandered to the gig on Saturday. It was nothing huge, just a few bands playing. It was a chance to network, maybe find an open spot in a band, who knows? She was excited to get out of the house, that was for sure, and she missed hanging out with her friends. ‘It’ll be nice To get the group back together,’ she thought.
She rounded the final corner, the lab finally in sight after having walked for 20 minutes. She adjusted the rings on her fingers as she approached the door, a grounding habit she couldn’t seem to break. When she entered the lab, she looked around, noticing that it was empty. She caught a glimpse of a guitar case leaning against a wall next to a backpack, but she didn’t see anybody in sight. She took her place at one of the tables, setting her bag down and pulling out a notebook. It wasn’t long before someone entered from the bathroom door in the corner of the room, and a gold and black cane was the first thing she saw. He looked around the room, cleared his throat when his eyes locked on her, and slowly made his way to her. It was mostly quiet, save for the air conditioner and the light tap of his cane as he walked. He sat down across from her, noticeably taller than her. She noted his hair, long and curly, half up. It was mostly dark brown, but she noticed that some pieces faded to a lighter blonde, and the underside was completely blonde. It was similar to her hair, though hers was dark blue instead of blonde, but the brown, the curls, the length, it all matched. Her eyes scanned him, as his did to her, noticing the similarities immediately. The piercings, the rings, the tattoos, the abundance of necklaces and bracelets, the dark makeup, and the chipped black nail polish. Familiarity bloomed in her chest, recognition decorated both of their eyes.
He was the first to speak, his voice was slightly raspy, his accent evident in each syllable of the words he spoke. “I didn’t hear anyone come in,” he stated. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, daring to meet his eyes, trying to present herself as anything but surprised. “I’m a quiet person,” she said, her light green eyes locking with his glowing amber ones.
He smirked at this, running his hand through his hair before returning her gaze. “As am I,” he started, before holding his hand out to her.
Their tattooed hands met across the table in a firm shake, and, like her face, no emotion was found in his eyes. “Viktor,” he said, his accent once again apparent.
“Eden.”

Eden tapped her pencil against the metal cafeteria table, looking around at the sea of students filling the tables, engaged in meaningless conversations about who was going where for the weekend. Laughter and chatter bounced off the pale brick walls, but her focus shifted from her thoughts when Jayce approached with his food in hand.
"Hey, I heard you’re actually going to make an appearance in science club after school today. Is that true?" he asked, hope in his eyes as he sat down and began to eat. She looked up at him, eyeing the amount of food he managed to fit onto his tray, before giving a sarcastic smirk. She tapped her chipped black nails against the table, a playful glint in her eyes. "Maybe. It depends on how fast you get on my nerves today."
He stopped mid-chew, looking up at her with amusement. He swallowed quickly, taking a swig of water before smiling back at her. "Right. Well, if you decide to come this time, maybe you’ll finally meet Viktor. You two are so alike, it’s actually really weird. I’m telling you, it’s like you’re the same person," he remarked before returning to his meal. She rolled her eyes at his statement.
"You keep saying that, but I’m not sure I believe you. You know what happened the last time I got involved with a 'genius,'" she said, making air quotes, her face falling slightly at the memory. Jayce swallowed slowly before looking up at her. "Right, I’m sorry, Eden. But I promise, Viktor’s different. Not just from that asshole, but from… well, everyone, really," he said, scratching the back of his neck nervously, trying to get out of the hole he dug himself into.
She looked away for a minute, her eyes spotting a squirrel scurrying across the courtyard outside the window next to their table. When she looked back, she saw Jayce’s apologetic expression and decided to give him some mercy. It wasn’t his fault anyway. "You know," she began, trying to lighten the mood a bit, "you keep telling me how alike we are, but if we’re so similar, where’s he been hiding?" She flashed a smile that she hoped conveyed that she wasn’t upset with him. He took another swig of water, getting the hint.
"Robotics club, science club… take your pick." He shrugged before discarding his now-empty food tray and then sat back down. Eden sighed and ran a hand through her coarse brown and blue curls, twisting a strand absentmindedly. Another name in the crowd, she thought. Another genius she wasn’t sure lived up to the gossip. They each had a story, a background that was meant to tug at your heartstrings. How different could Viktor be?
Her mind wandered to her recent past, which involved a 'genius' who had promised her the world. In the end, all he did was lie and hurt her, treating their relationship as if it were nothing more than an equation to solve. She had learned her lesson; she would never let anyone do that to her again. That’s why she had sunk all her time into chemistry and music lately. Not only was it something to preoccupy her time and mind, but it never lied to her. Chemistry had rules; music had emotion — both things the self-proclaimed prodigy had never graced her with.
In a world full of uncertainties, she could call them a comfort, a home. She sighed and shook her head, discarding the remains of her food before heading to her math class. Today felt like it was going to be long, for sure.

Across campus, Viktor entered the science lab with Ekko, adjusting his guitar strap before leaning against the wall with his backpack. His fingers tapped rhythmically against the desk, rings clinking—a quiet habit he barely noticed anymore—as he waited for more students to file in. He glanced around at the posters lining the walls, his sharp eyes scanning without much interest.
Ekko finally sat down next to him, pulling out a notebook and some pens before turning to Viktor. "So, you’re actually going to the gig this weekend? For real?" he asked with a smirk. Viktor responded with his own small smile; his eyes reflected his dry wit.
"Of course," he said, pushing back a lock of brown and blonde hair. "Why wouldn’t I?"
Ekko rolled his eyes slightly as the teacher entered the room, preparing to begin class. "Dude, come on. You’re always too busy to go, but I’m glad you’re coming this time." Ekko glanced at the teacher to ensure class wasn’t starting just yet. "You know, Eden is going to be there. Maybe you’ll finally get to meet her." Viktor rolled his eyes, shaking his head slightly.
"I keep hearing about her. It’s starting to feel like it’s only a matter of time before we run into each other," he said, his eyebrow slightly arched.
Ekko chuckled lightly, glancing away from his friend for a moment. "Honestly, it feels like it, man," he said, facing him again. "You two are basically the same person. Smart, sarcastic, science nerds… Hell, she even paints her nails black." He gestured to Viktor’s nails, which, although slightly chipped, were also painted black.
Viktor chuckled softly as he pulled out his own notebook and pens. "Sounds like you’re describing a mirror." He looked back at his friend, his dry wit lacing his words.
"Pretty much," Ekko lightly swatted his shoulder with the back of his hand. "I can’t believe you haven’t met her. It’s like fate is teasing us or something." Viktor shook his head again; he didn’t buy into destiny — only hard work and logic. It seemed that people loved romanticizing things that didn’t need to be so complicated. After all, it was just meeting someone. How crazy could things really turn out?

By the time the bell rang, Eden was already making her way toward the science lab. As she walked through the hall, her conversation with Jayce earlier replayed in her mind. He always liked to draw parallels between people; he always liked seeing things that weren’t there. He was good at romanticizing things, that’s for sure. However, the way he described Viktor tugged at her thoughts. He was another name in a sea of names, which was certain, but the way Jayce had painted him piqued her interest. Smart, sarcastic, genius. What if he wasn’t wrong this time?
She shook her head at the thought, determined not to let another genius manipulate her. She’d learned her lesson the hard way, and she wasn’t about to fall for it again. She sighed as she approached the science lab, adjusting the rings on her fingers—a grounding habit she couldn’t seem to break. Jayce and Ekko had been talking about him for what felt like forever.
She opened the door slowly, noticing that it was mostly empty, except for one person holding a gold and black cane in their right hand. She caught a glimpse of the guitar case in the far corner, and as she set her things down, the person cleared his throat. She looked up, only to lock her light green eyes with his glowing amber ones.
"I didn’t hear anyone come in," he stated, with an accent evident with each word. She cleared her throat, trying to present herself as anything but surprised. "I’m a quiet person," she said, her face not reflecting much emotion.
He smirked, running a hand through his hair before taking a seat at the same table. "As am I," he started, facing her and holding out his hand. Their tattooed hands met in a firm shake. "Viktor," he said, locking eyes with her.
"Eden."

An unfortunate one indeed. I'm currently in my last semester of undergrad. I'm a Psych major with a Comm studies minor (been at it for years). Any advice? Or comments?
@askviktor
What degrees do you have? Are there any interesting stories from your undergrad/grad school days?
I have a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics and a doctorate in Theoretical Physics. My Master’s thesis in Applied Mathematics explored nonlinear dynamical systems in self-regulating mechanisms - how complex, seemingly chaotic systems could stabilize themselves through feedback loops. My Theoretical Physics PhD dissertation was titled "Harmonic Resonance and the Theory of Energy Optimization in Adaptive Constructs." I proposed that energy could be manipulated more efficiently through resonance patterns, allowing mechanical systems to function with minimal external input. In essence, I sought to create machines that could power themselves.
Much of that time was a blur for me. I did gain something of a reputation as an instructor, however!

To be clear, I did not smash his laptop. I knocked it off his desk, which caused it to smash upon the ground. An unfortunate accident, you understand.
