Native American Wedding Vases: The Circle of Life

Almost every culture embraces a set of traditions and ceremonial practices surrounding weddings. The tribes of North America are no different.

Native American wedding vases are designed and used to symbolize this sacred union and the circle of life. Different tribes, such as the Acoma and Navajo, create these vessels using traditional clays and ornamentation. Even though the materials and decorations differ, their shapes remain similar.

Design

Native American wedding vases generally look the same. It’s a vessel with two spouts on the top rising from the opposite sides of the vase. Each spout represents the spouse in the marriage. Handles connecting the spouts represent the couple’s unification and the circle of life.

Construction

Traditionally, the parents of the groom create the wedding vase. These vessels use clays local and indigenous to their specific pueblo or tribe. Depending on the process, a temper consisting of silica or sand stabilizes the clay.

The wedding vessels are sculpted by hand. The firing of these vases also follows the tribe’s or pueblo’s traditional means. Usually, the firing happens outside. Once fired, the vases are cleaned and polished.

Ceremonial Use

Before the wedding ceremony, the groom and his family take the vessel and offer it to the bride and her family. This pre-wedding union consists of the families sitting down and offering the couple advice and personal experiences.

On the wedding day, the vase is filled with a liquid meant to be drunk by the couple. Some use holy water or nectar created and blessed by a medicine man. Some fill the vessel with tea.

How the bride and groom take drinks from the wedding vase depends on their tribe’s traditions.

The Navajo and Cherokee begin this part of the ceremony by having the groom offer the vase to the bride. She takes a drink from the vase and then presents it to the groom. He will then take a drink from the other spout.

Once they’ve individually taken drinks from the wedding vase, they will drink from the vase together. If they can accomplish this without spilling any liquid, they are expected to have a long and joyous life together.

Post Ceremony

The couple takes the vessel home, and it becomes the most cherished piece in their new life. Both are responsible for caring for it. The Navajo believe that a damaged wedding vase foretells troubles the marriage will experience.

In some tribal traditions, if a spouse dies, the remaining spouse offers the wedding vase to another married couple. This celebrates the joy experienced by the original owners while wishing the new couple a long and prosperous life together.
